A left turn arrow is a priority sign, compared to a dedicated light which is regulatory and prohibits left turns on red

Only legal when both streets (the one you are getting off and the one you are getting on at) are one ways.

This happened to me early on, the lights to go straight were green but the left turn was red and i misinterpreted that, luckily my sisters dad was there and immediately let me know and it was early in the morning with barely any traffic
