An "industry plant" is a term used in the music industry to refer to an artist who, despite appearing to have risen to fame organically, is actually backed by a record label or other music industry entities from the early stages of their career. The term implies that the artist's success is not entirely grassroots or independent but, rather, strategically engineered by industry professionals.
@3hooks1003 ай бұрын
In other words it ued to be called artist development. Its the labels JOB to advocate for the artist: finding the right songs, media training, cross promotion in print, internet and TV, etc. This idea of grassroots and organic growth is from the early 2000s era of indie labels nd the artist takign things into their own hads becasue of. the internet leveling the playing field of opportunity. What you described is what the labels USED to do in the first place. Otherwise whats the point?

Notice he doesn't just come to talk or criticize, he comes with a solution and a plan. Great piece. Guest is really well spoken and he makes a great point about the industry preferring to glorify superficial and consumerist artists/music so they don't have a generation of people who are more interested in ideas and personal growth than in just chasing status and buying what the shops are selling. Dark times in America but more of this sunlight can help brighten things up.

It is no accident that the most popular Black music strayed away from being about love and social consciousness and toward self-aggrandizing, hedonism and divisiveness. People were behaving too cohesively, the movement was too fast (years between 1965-1975 or so) and would have too powerfully shifted the narrative from the negative image of BF that is so necessary to keep folks divided and distracted. Music is a powerful force and what you listen to often reflects in your mindset, behavior and personal choices.

“Conscious rap” isn’t new… the difference is that back in the day around the 80s they didn’t look at it as a threat. Remember hip-hop was thought to be a fad and no real money behind it means that it wasn’t a threat to the machine. Once things changed in the late 80s/early 90s they quickly took control of the narrative and changed the culture away from what the roots that the pioneers setup. Real hip hop heads never die, we multiply 💯 know your roots and who you’re rooting for word to Soul 🗣️

Valid points but we can’t just blame the “industry”. The industry just lets the market speak & exploits it. If the market made conscious music highly in demand, labels would follow suit. Controversy, sex, drama, etc… sells. If people stopped consuming it, it wouldn’t be promoted so heavily. The power is really with the people. (Same with politics & all other forms of media)
@Argemirel4 ай бұрын
I agree it’s really the people that demand a lot of that music from the market as far as mainstream. There is a market for Conscious music just there’s a market for Gospel. The thing it black folks can’t keep complaining & expecting aglo’s to want to help push a positive message to us when they’re profiting greatly from it. It’s in our own interest to build our own labels & distributions networks to compete against the major labels. & No it won’t be easy at all.
@jacksp8de4 ай бұрын
