This is soooo true! Although, I'd recommend at least getting all the original memories, and maybe even completing the Divine Beast....if only so you'll have full knowledge of the memories that tie-in to the DLC (mostly for Champions Ballad). But that's far from necessary!! Edit: so, as someone reminded me, the Divine Beast are required for the Champion's Ballad dlc, but all the memories are not. Still think its worth it to get at least most of them first.

Context is important. Unless you already know what the game is about the trailers for it just seem random and off putting. Commercials are supposed tot be able to sell the game to people who don't know what it's about, and these commercials seem directed to people who are already reading the articles and are excited for the game. To everyone else, it's senseless. With all that in mind, it's probably the worst Zelda commercials. Yes, more than the weird ones we saw before.

Both English commercials were pretty terrible at explaining anything for this game. At least the Japanese one has a stronger hint that it involves the moon slowing coming down into the building the player is in, but even then some people could misunderstand what's going on if they have no context to the game.

I´m recommending that you play atleast all the 3D games (Skyward Sword, Ocarina of Time, Majoras Mask, Twilight Princess, Windwaker) Age of Calamity since it´s the direct prequel to BotW, perhaps Links Awakening and A Link between Worlds.

I agree. And I think the first 3D Zelda he should start with is Ocarina of Time since it's the game before the timeline split, and b/c the other 3D Zeldas reference back to that one the most. Either start off Ocarina of Time or Skyward Sword, since that one is the first in the timeline.

I would like to see him play it after BotW... but *not* _immediately_ after. The Zelda games tend to build upon each other. Playing BotW already "spoils" some things for him. Probably more in terms of game mechanics than story. Still, if he tries to, for example, go in reverse order, the only place where he won't feel like game mechanics are being "nerfed" or getting worse is when the _opposite_ happened. All the refinements and improvements we all experienced game to game aren't fun when experienced backwards. XD

The plot in general honestly. Literally opens with the reveal that the setting you've known up till now was utterly decimated and lost to time and your sister being stolen by a demonic bird. More morally grey too.

I love that you’re basically just going to be a Zelda channel next year. You need to play Ocarina of Time and then do a little research on the timeline split because only then will things make a little bit of sense later on. Majora’s Mask is a kind of one off but dark and interesting. Twilight Princess has a great story and will get you teary at the end. Wind Waker is about the most badass Link who wasn’t chosen as a Hero but made himself one. A link to the past is the start of the strongest Hero’s story. A Link between Worlds is just great. I think it might have been interesting to watch the trailers in release order just to get a sense for how they improved. Because let's face it: Nintendo was shit at making trailers for years. (To be fair, the pre-Internet ones were made to be shown on TV, and it's pretty difficult to attract players for your 8-bit game with a TV commercial that everyone's going to watch... Being able to post gameplay trailers online for fans to watch helped a lot.)

Smash Bros. character reveals can generate more hype than some game reveals, and Zelda has had some of the greatest trailers I've ever seen for a videogame. I mean, when I saw the Switch Presentation in 2017 I had no interest in the series at all, but the trailer was so good it sold me on the console by itself.

Most of the zelda games aren't available on Switch yet, but there are lots of rumors about a zelda collection for the 35th anniversary next year the same way they did one for mario this year. Right now the only zelda games available on Switch are 1 and 2 on NES, Link to the Past on SNES, the remake of Link's Awakening, and BotW. Most of the others are still available on the Wii U eshop, though.

Here's my recommendation of games to play, in order of priority: Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, Wind Waker, A Link to the Past, A Link Between Worlds. Order doesn't matter too much, as long as you go Ocarina of Time -> Majora's Mask, and A Link to the Past -> A Link Between Worlds. After those, if you still want to play more, definitely check out Link's Awakening, Minish Cap, and maybe even Zelda 1 just to see where it all started.

In regards to what you could maybe play: I think you can‘t go wrong with Ocarina of Time & Majoras Mask (both originally for N64 but have been remade), Twilight Princess & Wind Waker (both have HD remakes), Skyward Sword and Link’s Awakening (the switch remake). I left out many of the old classics but going by personal experience, I think it‘s hard to get into the older games if you haven‘t played them as kids. Nostalgia can play a big part into why they‘re considered classic and I also have a hard time enjoying older games, graphic wise. Personally, I think Skyword Sword is the weakest one of the ones I mentioned but since you seemed to enjoy the trailer I included it as well 😊

Characters have more realistic proportions while staying cartoony enough to not look uncanny like a lot of Twilight Princess designs. The game is colorful and vibrant like Skyward Sword while bringing in the cel-shading from Wind Waker. It's a game that has a wide variety of tones, from silliness, to eeriness, and above all melancholy and I feel like the artstyle is great at capturing the disparate tones beautifully.

A list of the Zelda games you should play in order and my rationale for the order: 1. Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (only first because you started with BotW and it comes out in less than a week) 2. Ocarina of Time (Definitely the best place to start off in my opinion; includes a lot of the elements that would become standard in future Zeldas) 3. Majora's Mask (Direct sequel to OoT with the same Link; while not very important to the timeline, it is incredibly important to the themes of OoT and is one of the best games in the series) 4. Wind Waker (Wind Waker's story relies pretty heavily on knowledge of the events of Ocarina of Time and the story is dramatically enhanced by that knowledge, especially towards the end of the game) 5. Twilight Princess (Some connections to OoT but not as many as the aforementioned games; a kind of spiritual successor to OoT) 6. A Link to the Past (Probably the most acclaimed 2D game in the franchise; connects to OoT a little but to understand it, you might want to understand the Zelda timeline a bit better) 7. Link's Awakening (Sequel to ALttP with the same Link) 8. A Link Between Worlds (Spiritual successor to ALttP) 9. Skyward Sword (Basically a prequel to the entire series; a lot of neat references to the other games that you will get if you played them all) 10. Breath of the Wild Sequel (Assuming you can play all these games before it comes out; if not, drop the other games and play this one since you are already in the middle of BotW) Games I didn't include and my rational behind their exclusion: 1 & 2. Zelda 1 and 2 (Zelda 1 is a classic and should definitely be played, but it's not that consequential to the timeline and is a bit rough by modern standards; Zelda 2 is even less important and notoriously difficult) 3 & 4. Oracle of Ages and Seasons (I haven't even played these games myself so I can't speak to their quality, but I can say that they aren't that relevant to the rest of the timeline) 5, 6, & 7. Minish Cap, Four Swords, and Four Swords Adventures (Minish Cap is a great game, but is relatively inconsequential, and FS and FSA follow the same story line, plus one of them is multiplayer and a pain to properly play) 8 & 9. Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks (Phantom Hourglass is probably one of the most widely disliked games in the series and its story is kind of unnecessary, despite being a direct sequel to WW; Spirit Tracks is supposedly a lot of fun but it's a bit inconsequential) 10. Tri Force Heroes (Pretty much a spinoff game that was shoehorned into the timeline for some bizarre reason. It's exclusively multiplayer so I don't see a need to play it) 11. Hyrule Warriors (Entirely a non canon spinoff with a story that feels more like a fanfiction than something that would actually be made by the Zelda team; if you like Dynasty Warrior games then you'll probably like this one but even then, Age of Calamity comes out in under a week)

Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks are like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask. A direct sequel to the last. Spirit Tracks is a little further down the timeline from WW and PH and contains a different link from the previous two, and similarly, Twilight Princess's link is a descendant of the MM link. WW and MM are also not on the same timeline, same as their descendants. Links' WW PH and ST design is "Toon Link", while MM and OoT Link design IS "Kid/Child Link" Twilight Princess was my first Zelda as a kid, I'm glad you've gotten so excited. It's overshadowed a lot but it's an excellent story.

If you're planning on playing the older Zelda games, I HIGHLY recommend you watching the announcement trailer for BoTW (which fans referred to as Zelda U before the name reveal), just so you would understand how TOTALLY different BoTW is from the traditional Zelda games. Just search for Zelda Wii U E3 2014 on KZbin for the video. Edit: REMEMBER, BoTW broke the established conventions of the Zelda series (eg. linear progression, etc.). Don't expect the older games to play like BoTW. Set your expectations so that you can enjoy those classics better.

The best versions of these games: - Twilight Princess HD for Wii U - Wind Waker HD for Wii U - Ocarina of Time 3D on 3DS - Majora's Mask is a bit more complicated. It looks better and runs better on 3DS, but some of the gameplay mechanics got dumbed down a bit on that version. Up to you which one you want to play. - Skyward Sword is only on Wii (but also playable on Wii U) So there isn't much choice for that one

The Wii U eventually became the ultimate Zelda machine--every mainline Zelda game is able to be played on it, with only Skyward Sword not having a digital version (the Wii disc runs on the Wii U). With the glacial progress the Switch Virtual Console is making, you probably won't be able to play the N64 games anytime soon. It's possible Nintendo will port the HD versions of the Gamecube games because they've been porting nearly everything from the Wii U, but nothing's been confirmed. As for Skyward Sword, there was a leak that said an HD version would release for Switch. So it might be worth to consider investing in a used Wii U...?

Nintendo seems to be heavily pushing for 1 Zelda title on the switch per year 2017: Breath of the Wild 2018: Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition 2019: Link's Awakening 2020: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity BotW 2 will probably release in 2021 or 2022. In whichever year of those two it doesn't release, I wouldn't be surprised to see one or more 3D Zelda games remastered for Switch. And there's still 2023 and 2024 after that with the potential to further fill out the Switch's Zelda library. I don't see the Switch going on far beyond that - although a backwards compatible successor might not be out of the question.

Since you asked, I was introduced to Zelda with Ocarina of Time when I was 5 or something like that. It made me passionate about games. Years later I was quite bored with the medium but still had hope for the new Zelda, a game that I've been waiting since Nintendo announced it would be an open world. When the first trailer was finally revealed, it made me feel like I regained something that I lost growing up. You can say it literally took my breath away. It made me fall in love with the franchise again, and with video games in general.
