(cw suicide and hospital mention) I first heard Kendrick's music when I was 16 and in the child's psych ward after trying to hang myself. My family never let us listen to music, especially secular music, so even though I secretly listened to music once I had internet and radio access, I had no entry way into rap - even though my mom let us listen to a little Christian rap, my dad was sensitive to it for racist reasons, and so I was more unfamiliar with rap than other music. My 3 weeks in the hospital were one of the most draining experiences in my life. Everything I'd previously used to will myself to live was not given to us - good food, fresh air, sunshine, colour, the internet, human connection - but not being allowed to have music was the most painful. We had a TV in the common area though, and I'd keep it on our MTV equivalent after hearing a snippet of 'i'. It rarely got air time, but when it did, I was glued to the screen. I owe my acceptance of my brown skin, the challenging of my views on justice, my love of hip hop, the hope found in realising my parents were wrong and people in the real world would accept me, and so many other things to that moment. I would be an entirely different person without that, and it's crazy to think such a small thing made that level of impact on me.

i do recommend to anyone who is voting in the poll to maybe not vote for your favorite artists that you know about. vote for the names you’ve never heard, ones you know little about, or artists you want to know more about. that way you can get something new out of it rather than having the same knowledge you already possess get thrown at you. that being said, voting popular artists like Kendrick isn’t totally bad, as maybe there are things you may not know about them that can help, and it also attracts a larger audience than an artist no one knows, i suppose. depends on what kind of fan you are.

While Bad Blood was okay, it also made me hungry for more of Lamar-Swift. They're both great at lyricism, and crafting melodies. I have been waiting for a full-fledged collaboration between the two. Even just an EP would suffice. With Taylor Swift's new alt-rock/folk route, it would make for a very interesting collab. Folk-Rap or Alt-rap fusion from the two would be great!
