This was a genuine blast! I agree, smash Brothers seems to be the end all be all game to make or break character designs. I'm glad what we have here exists, because that just means dk64 is not only acknowledged by nintendo, it's fucking canon! The grand Kings return, to all the little details and every other game featuring these characters being kept, I can safely say that I think donkey Kong is finally getting the love, passion, and respect he so rightfully deserves. And I am so happy that the both of you were talking about this stuff, because for the longest time I thought I was the only one who was taking notes. I am so happy that somebody out there, let alone two of you, even so much has a passing thought about donkey kong, let alone the little changes. You guys genuinely make me happy. As for the Retro Retcon, I’m really dreading it. Now, don’t get me wrong. I have a tremendous amount of respect for Rare’s work on the series. I went back and played DKC 1, 2, and 3 on NSO, and they’re all great (even though DKC3 is easily the worst, even behind the first one). However, being somebody who played Returns and Tropical Freeze first, I just enjoy their take on the series a lot more. Rare definitely has some things up on Retro, like Krocodile Isle, and the Kremlings in general. Their personality and design far outpaced the Tikis, and though the Snowmads were a big step up, they still can’t match the Kremlings. They were better at implementing Animal Buddies. Their games had much more crunchy (for lack of a better term), solid, kinetic (in the words of the Geek Critique) platforming and movement, whereas Retro’s games tend to feel much more momentum-based and fluid. However, I think one of (among several others) Retro’s strengths in comparison to Rare is that they were able to vastly expand on the series’ environmental storytelling. This was facilitated via the K-Temple stages, implied to be built by the ancient Kongs (who wrote prophecies about Cranky’s youth on the walls), as well as Secret Seclusion and the sky level from Returns. The bananas on the DK Island archipelago are shown to have magical properties, possibly being the real reason so many people have tried to steal them. Things like this are what makes me really hope that Retro gets to Return (pun intended) one day, or that EPD doesn’t entirely erase everything they did.

More “insiders” are saying this game is 2D, which really scares me. Not that I won’t enjoy it (in fact, tropical freeze is in my top 3 games ever) it’s just that I don’t think it will sell well, or bring back DK as a major pillar for Nintendo. If K.Rool comes back, it may boost the sales past 3 million, but it still won’t be a top seller or bring dk back, which are Nintendo’s two big reasons for making this game. If this all comes to be, it’ll make me sad because Nintendo will have no reason to make more games and we will enter DK drought for another 7+ years. It also just doesn’t make sense for another 2D game to be on the system since TF is already there, thus possibly reducing sales even more. So I’ll be on the edge of my seat till E3 rolls around and we find out just exactly this DK project is.

I want a game that's like a combination of Mario World and DK Country, where you collect a conga line of Kongs that each work like a specialized rideable yoshi. Not only you get an extra jump by sacrificing one, but you must find a correct combination of allies in correct order to create complicated special jumps. You activate a special jump by having the next Kong in line throw your current Kong away like Klonoa. If you play as Diddy with Chunky next, pressing down+toss makes Chunky crack Diddy's jet pack in an explosion that throws Chunky high into the air, and Diddy returns to a barrel somewhere. If you toss sideways or up, you can attack an enemy or force player two to have your current Kong as their next Kong, even to sabotage his row order in competitive co-op. Mostly linear in first playthrough, but that's only 30% and then the world map really opens up as you re-run gauntlets through several levels to prepare yourself for some insane jump you saw earlier, almost like sequence breaking a Metroidvania. There should be exact clones like Diddy and Dixie (change them to be) and DK and Funky, so it's possible to have two of the same playstyles in a row, but their specials could be different like Dixie won't have a jet pack. There should be a roster of 20 or so Kongs with 8-ish types, and you would also be able to hoard ALL the Chimps to make the 2P not be able to get the hover jump. And also make this the new Smash Bros. Please invent Kong types in the comments if you'd like Chimps - Always crouch, jump high with hover descent, Diddy and Dixie run fast Chumps - Crouch running, can't stop in tight spots, DK Lugs - Jump low upwards, jump higher the further you jump but can't change direction when falling, can grab ceilings to hang in place Toots - Can run up walls and launch into a wall jump, can crawl, Candy's wall jump has the 'Lugs' gimmick and can hang onto ceilings while Tiny's does not. Chunks - Can't crouch, low jump, invulnerable when running If this REALLY could be the model for a new marketing machine like Smash, I would prefer over genuine characters a loose Kong character creator, where players could alter stats and create their own "Mii"-like Kongs that evoke popular characters. Those would be entered into a combination of leaderboard and splatfest-like activity where they could be picked up and finalized as their own, real characters by Nintendo, but like Rabbid Peach or Rabbid Luigi. Previously I had the same concept for F-Zero characters who wear Kamen Rider-like masks and armor, but are "secretly" YOUR self-made character since an algorithm would combine these features from the character most people have been playing in a Death Stranding -like environment slowly building race tracks by hand as a community.

@correctly paved From a marketing and business standpoint that makes more sense, but we can’t be fully sure till we actually see the game. Leakers aren’t the most reliable people, especially lately, but we can’t be too sure they’re wrong until Nintendo actually shows the game. I’ll play it either way, I just hope it doesn’t get panned for being 2D.

Fun Fact: Winky was replaced with Rattly because the developers did not like the huge hitboxes that the frog had, this was confirmed in a interview the devs got into with either DKVine or Game Xplain (I dont remember which one)

I feel like the Smash stuff is more of... Nintendo wants to start doing new things with certain characters, so they show Sakurai and he incorporates it into their designs and movesets. Like, if Nintendo was planning on bringing back K Rool, they probably worked with Sakurai to make sure that the design would mostly line up with what they are gonna be doing with him. And that might also be why they "lied" about Bayonetta winning the ballot. They had to figure out how they wanted K Rool to look in future games and then let Sakurai make his own alterations from there. Not sure about Diddy but I feel like Bowser Jr's clown car stuff was more of Nitnendo saying "hey, we are gonna be using the clown car heavily for Junior, so you might consider putting it into Jr's moveset." And then Sakurai was like "if he's gonna be in it all the time from now on, I might as well make his entire moveset center around it. Ooh, and then I can do a bunch of random wacky Mario machinery references and include the Koopalings too". When compared to pretty much all of the other Mario characters, Junior's depiction is much closer to his mainline appearance. I think Nintendo gives Sakurai mostly free-reign with what he does with characters, but nowadays if a fighter isn't some legacy character, he tries to stick fairly closely to how they look in their home series. Really not sure about DK Island, but I honestly hope they don't keep the Rare design. I feel like it was used in the Final Smash because it makes more sense to use. But I don't want to see yet another stream of retcons that change Donkey Kong even more. I'd like them to keep what Retro came up with, and then just blend Rare stuff back into it.

For the Retro Retcon, it's important to note Roy in Melee. Kind of like how Epic Yarn got shafted for a Wooly World stage, Leif got shafted for Roy, who's design doesn't even match Roy's final design for FE6.

Currently watching the video now, but I have something I wanna say: something that I am scared that will happen with the new game. You’ve already said things about how if it’s a 2d game, people are going to complain because it’s 2d and the development team could have been working on Odyssey 2 (If it would be Nintendo EDP [And if it is that team]). If they do make a 3D game, I expect it’s gonna sell well. I’m afraid if they decide to make another 2D donkey Kong game, like another donkey Kong country, people would complain that isn’t 3D. Hopefully it wouldn’t happen, but I just wanted to say that.

To be honest, I hope if DK Switch is 3D, it's more linear like Sonic, 3D World/3D Land or Crash, and not just cause I think that style works better for translating DKC into 3D or making the game more challenging. I love sandbox platformers, but I think just like how DK64 is kinda seen as a flawed Banjo game, a new 3D sandbox DK game, might just be seen as Odyssey 2 in all but name. I might even honestly prefer the new DK to be 2D but then if it is, you get Nintendo fans complaining about how they wasted the Odyssey team for it and ugh. It feels like DK is destined to never have a break outside of the hardcore fanbase.
