Im pretty sure that the staff does follow normal casting times. It doesn’t mention “you can use an action to expend…” it just says you can expend. The new Cube of Force has the same wording and Shield is one of the options, which is a reaction spell, so the new meaning of “cast the spell” in the 2024 book most likely keeps the same casting times, potentially allowing you to use items as a reaction.

Typically it follows the casting time unless it specifically says a time. Most items that have spells with casting times over an action specify that you use an action. There is also a cleric item that allows you to cast a spell that is normally an action cast with a bonus action. This changes the spell from ok to one of the best spells to have.
@jocelyngray630621 күн бұрын
That's my ruling, but I also won't allow people to cast from scrolls as a bonus action or reaction because unfurling a scroll and reading from it just doesn't feel like something that should be that fast and I don't want people having a bag of shield scrolls for next to nothing at high levels.

Unless it specifies a casting time it follows the spell times. Crafting means that all Wizards or EK fighters will be required to have arcana and Smith's tools proficiency as they will be expected to make all the PC's armor spell storing armor of shield, spell storing shield of absorb elements, and a spell storing weapon of booming blade. Just 450 GP and 25 days per person. No doubt that they will spring for the cart so you are crafting the whole day also. You are no longer an adventurer, you are a traveling enchanter.

Yeah, i thought it said "as an action ... use a charge ro cast" but (at least the text Kobold showed #NDA) it just says "while hiding.. you can cast" which seems interesting. I disagree with the "divine intervention moment." I think divine intervention skips casting time, because it says you cast the spell as a part of the action. These seem to just say you cast the spell, which would presumably mean you'd have to take the magic action on subsequent turns. I'm not entirely sure though, but I just think that the wording being different is pertinent. Thanks for the video! With the new rules, both the cleric and druid get an ability at lvl 1 to add wisdom proficiency to arcana and another skill. Since they aren't the same feature, they should stack, meaning you can get expertise + int + 2*wis modifier to the mizzmage build. At level 9 with 1 lvl cleric, 4 lvls druid and 4 lvls wizard, you can get an 18 int and 18 wis, and as the new wizard gets expertise in a int skill of their choice. That means you get expertise (+8), int mod (+4), 2*wis mod (+8) for a total of +20 to all arcana checks. Combined with the dragon form of the stars druid, this means you cannot roll less than 30 on arcana checks. That allows you to cast all spells without a chance to miscast, as the 9-th level spells (which you cannot cast yet) still only require a arcana DC of 28. You won't even need the starry form for any of the spells you can cast, as the difficulty for 5th lvl spells is 20, and you cannot get lower than a 21. at lvl 17, if you only focus on getting ASIs you can get a +27 to arcana at lvl 17, meaning you don't need the dragon starry form at all, as a nat 1 still adds up to 28. Even if you say that you cannot stack the druid and cleric wisdom modifiers to the arcana check, you still only remove a single wisdom mod, meaning you still make all your checks easily with the starry form.

The Acrobatic Assist feature of the QuarterStaff of the Acrobat reminded me of something: I kind of don't like "static advantage" features that just always give you advantage on certain D20 tests, because it makes the special circumstances of the current situation mostly irrelevant. There's no incentive to look for some situational advantage to make the check easier, because you already have advantage by default and it doesn't stack. And that makes things less interactive and less interesting. I think I would prefer if static advantage features like this were replaced with numerical bonuses, even if the numerical bonus is actually less impactful than advantage.

Kinda sad that Oathbreaker got removed. It would have been cool to get an Oath breaking system (as well as maybe a pact broken Warlock and faith loss Cleric). Oathbreaker is such a cool idea and makes a lot of sense, but the subclass wasn’t well designed to fit the concept. Like what does boosting the damage of undead have to do with breaking an oath where you devoted your soul or swore revenge. I was really hoping for some customizable system where your oath breaker paladin’s new abilities related to that oath they broke, but I guess Oathbreaker is just gone now.
@TerminalDevastation28 күн бұрын
Putting aside that the old oathbreaker is still usable... I love the concept of oathbreaker getting a system that varies based on what oath was broken, and it should be done that way... but it probably needs its own supplement dedicated to it and adjacent features (oathbreaker monster statblocks and such) due to how involved doing that would be, especially since it'd have to be designed with a bit of future proofing. I also sort of feel like making it a Warlock subclass might be a good option for it? Like one specifically designed to work with multi classing with Paladin. Like maybe its first features treats Paladin levels as Warlock levels for Invocations, and always changes radiant damage to a different type based on "patron" and inverts a bunch of other paladin features, just right off the bat.

Do you have to attune weapons and staffs enchanted with spells? Which wands if any require attunement? (I know wand of webs does, but it seems like wand of magic missles doesn't as shown in the video) Can you make wands of other spells, or only ones listed? If you don't need attunement that opens up a lot of things. (also, does an enchanted staff work as a spellcasting focus?) For instance, with lower level spells, your to hit and save dcs change, but your healing from healing spells don't. Carry around a few wands and then everyone's a healer. Alternatively, a druid or even anyone with wands of spike growth or another spell that doesn't really scale with spellcasting modifiers could be amazing. Mirage arcane seems like a standout option. Other note, can you cast a ritual version of a spell with a staff (ie. plant growth) or a focus spell (wall of stone)? I really need to look into magic item rules. Edit: knives and slingshots likely can't be given healing spells. (I think)

The Crafter Origin feat might actually be very useful as well, cutting the gold cost to make everything by 20%, basically like you know the correct suppliers to buy the raw materials from. But that only matters depending on how much gold your DM gives out. Maybe the new DMG gives suggestions on how much gold to give out at what levels, if it is I hope it gets touched on in your up incoming Crafting video. Also using Grim Hollow's "Adroit Crafter" feat you can half the production time of any item you craft, which is homebrew but is partnered with WotC like Humblewood and Critical Role's Tal'Dorei Reborn as far as I can tell. So it should probably be talked about with as much consideration as people give stuff like Blood Hunter, which is to mention it and then ignore it, sadly. I'm also excited for a Bastion video, as it'd probably cover how you can make your sla- I mean hirelings craft magic items, possibly being able to create your own magic item shop or be a supplier of magic items to shops. That second one would probably be much easier to manage at the cost of selling them slightly below market price. Materials cost 50% of Market Price, sell it to either a consumer for 100% value getting 50%, or sell to a store for probably 80% (like the crafter feat) it's Market Value making 30% profit per item minus the labor of your sl- hirelings and tax. Being a supplier is easier. Making and giving your s- hirelings Enspelled Staffs or Hammers of Fabricate would also speed up the production of Mundane items by a lot. 1 slave could make 5 sets of Plate Armor in a day as long as you have the materials. I mean hirelings. A Blacksmith Hireling could use a Fabricate Hammer to easily out pace the mundane method of making mundane items.

in 3E, spell casting items that had a costly material component had their value increased by a factor of the material component cost. Single use items' value was increased by 1x the material component, unlimited items were 100x the material component cost, daily limit items were 50x the material component cost, and charged items were multiplied by the number of charges. I'd never let someone make a ceremony staff for 400 gold and then pump out 3.5 holy waters a day. But I also wouldn't require ceremony to be cast to make holy water. Getting an NPC to cast a 1st level spell for you costs 50gp, and Holy Waters cost 25gp, so I'd have a cantrip that lets you use 25gp of silver dust to turn a vial of water into holy water.

Is the potion of Pugilism homebrew for the first time?... I haven't found anything similar when trying to optimize my monk builds in 5e 2014.

Do you know if there's anything to suggest that they're putting a Monster Statistics by CR table in the Monster Manual or is it 100% wishful thinking? I currently have access to the 2014 DMG because someone is sharing it with me, but I'm thinking about buying my own copy to make sure I still have online access to it in the future...

Personally id run the arcana check for magic items as a check based on the source you are pulling the base spell from (divine = religion, arcane = arcana, primal = nature…) but otherwise it does make good sense for base on the fly logic

Is crafting more strenuous than "reading, talking, eating, or standing watch"? If so, you cannot craft during a short rest and gain the benefits of the short rest. "Interrupting the rest" is a separate section.

Working is quite literally the opposite of resting.

Is potion of growth unchanged in the DMG? D4 for 1d4 hours on any weapon attacks or unarmed attacks is a lot more forgiving than 10 minutes for d6 on unarmed only. If I'm a monk, I think I want the growth potion available for expanding grappling targets anyways.

Technically there used to be a rule allowing players to bind a use of any spell into any staff for a 1 time use (more or less like a reusable free scroll), but im guessing that was removed in the 24 version

I wonder if assistants need to be player characters. Would unseen servants or skeletons be able to be assistants?

The table at 5:04 is a bit confusing; PHB 223 says you need only "proficiency in the Arcana skill OR with Calligrapher's Tools" to craft scrolls. Is there some unshown exception in the DMG for scrolls or is it presenting an alternative ruleset? PHB 223 also requires the Herbalism Kit to craft Potions of Healing (no ability to do it with Alchemist's Supplies) - are the basic Potions of Healing an exception to the potions allowed by Alchemist's Supplies, or (again) is it an alternative ruleset?

I was hoping we could see some magic items designed to supplement the updates to Two-Weapon fighting, like a Shortsword, and Scimitar that take 1 attunement slot between them, and have benefits based on dual wielding them, so I am a bit sad we are missing out on that.

Can't wait for my party to not read anything and I have to explain everything to them as always (I actually don't mind as its only one time, we having fun!) Also my players are gonna love crafting a bunch of BS effects into weapons, can't wait to see the sword of find traps. Where the sword always says there are traps around because of itself!

i agree. nothing like the axe wielding dwarf barb whipping up a catapult to relieve the cowards of their gates and walls. ..or just fling yourself and open the door when youre done making a mess. ..man i miss Dark Age of Camelot.

When multiple people work on one item. Do they all need to meet the requirements, or does one need to meet all, or can you split the requirments - so arcana, tools and spells prepared?
@PackTactics22 күн бұрын
Both need to have the same tool and arcana prof. They don't need to know the spell. So a normal Ranger with woodcarvers tools can help the wizard make a wand of magic missile.

The animated broom is really cool. It almost TPKed our entire party in the death house at the start of Curse of Strahd. Can you imagine 5 players all getting wiped out by a broom? We only survived by eventually locking it in a closet. The entire party was rolling 1's and 2's on our attack rolls. While the damn broom kept rolling 19's and 20's. It would have gone down as the single most pathetic campaign of all time.

For the sake of saving gold early game, I still think it's worth it to craft mundane items. And by the time you get to level 7, if you're playing a caster with access to Fabricate, then I believe it remains worth it into the later game.
