In Deep Dives 002 - The Evil Within Story Explained/Analysed, I am covering another one of my favourite games of all time, The Evil Within.
What I'll be doing is diving into The Evil Within story, explaining and analysing the hidden themes in the game while taking an extended look at the characters and other random facts.

I feel like Ruvik and Seb are parallel equals. Ruvik lost his sister in a fire. Seb lost his daughter in a fire (before the sequel retcon.) Similar traumas. Ruvik takes out his pain on other people, Seb takes it out on himself with drinking and smoking. Seb has an unconscious effect on the machine, his firearms being a metaphor for his mental battle with Ruvik...Which is why he also gets a convenient machinegun and rocket launcher in the final fight... In the end, they both technically win. Ruvik's out of the machine, and so is Seb. They both had similar mental fortitude.

But I don't think that was Ruvik at the very end. I think when he touched Leslie and he disintergrated into that brain, that was Ruvik switching, taking over his body AND leaving STEM. Seb took over the machine at that point without realizing it, hence the machine gun, rocket launcher and handgun appearing so conveniently. A camera shot even holds itself over Seb on the STEM before the fight starts.

Also, in Kidman's interview logs scattered around the DLCs it was apparently Myra who introduced her to Mobius and prepped her for the mission. It can be noticed that when briefing Juli on her future KPD partners "Agent's" voice softens when talking about Sebastian

I guess it’s a plot hole but the missing person’s posters for Seb, Joseph, and Oscar said they all disappeared at different times. Oscar’s makes sense, it says his patrol car was on the outskirts of the city. For Joseph, it says he went missing on his way home. For Seb, it says he went missing during a missing person’s case. Did Mobius make these posters to cover up their connection to STEM? Were they conjured up within STEM itself? Or was the KCPD team kidnapped before they even went to Beacon Mental Hospital? Such an odd plot point.

As an avid fan of the games and who went through hell 100% both games, I have to say this is the best video that goes over the first game that is clear, digestible and not too long. I understood the story myself, but wanted to see if I could remember it, again this is the best video for that. Fantastic, my only thing I'd say to add is the concept art or dialogue, scenes or notes in the game itself. Just to show more of what you're talking about for others to understand.

Great Job! But i noticed something in the main campaign. There are files that suggests that seb and joseph were abducted time before. Thats why seb has a missing person document. And the joseph document says that he was seen for last time searching for someone (sebastian). Maybe from second 1, everithing is happening inside stem. And the murder inside beacon happens when ruvik enters to leslies mind.

It's not confirmed but I believe the documents to be a metaphor as such. So in essence, they have been abducted.

amazing videos! i would LOVE to see deep dives into both nier and nier automata, both games have an extremely deep story that i think a lot of gamers fail to fully understand. automata sent me into a very weird state of mind and actually had me sobbing during the end credits. few games make me truly feel this way, I feel nier doesnt get the love it deserves.

Leslie and Ruvik have to be my favorite characters. Don't get me wrong I love Seb and Joseph but I feel so bad for Leslie. I wanted to give the poor guy a hug. As for Ruvik, he was so interesting to me and I did find myself rooting for a somewhat happy ending for him once we discovered the truth.

This is such a brilliant channel. I loved EW1 & 2. Couldn't stand the lazy critics giving it a half-assed review. In the UK, I remember it going on sale really quickly. Ended up getting the special box set, with the detective's diary notebook Thankyou for the effort you put in to make this. It'll stand out as one of the best EW analysis videos on KZbin for years to come. Keep up the good work!

I honestly really loved this game, and it reminds me a lot of Resident Evil 4, which was probably my favourite in the series. The Evil Within was suspenseful, and really fun! I was genuinely scared playing through this game, and still get scared by it.

I adore the Evil Within! It has some serious issues, the whole experience is kind of jank, the performance on consoles and PC hardware at the time is poor, the pacing is odd starting off scary and heavily leaning into stealth based gameplay just for most of that to be dropped in the latter half, and although the writing and characters are outstanding, on a surface level they both seem shallow and underdeveloped. I understand why it got some lower critic reviews at the time, but for me it's a masterpiece and one of the best survival horror games ever made. I can't give it a 10/10 because of all of the previous issues that I mentioned, but it does everything else so well that it gets a minimum of a 9/10 for me.

it's not a perfect name but it was the first survival horror game i ever played and it is very near to my heart. i love ruvik, i love the aesthetic, i love how complicated and deep the lore goes, i love the dlcs, and i loved getting my (spiritual) balls stomped on by the difficult gameplay

Just finished this game, it's hard and frustrating in the final chapters, especially if you play on consoles , with no aim assists it's very difficult to hit boss weak spots and save ammo. Anyways,this video explained things well.

I haven't finished this but has been watching it bit by bit since its publishing. Evil Within is still very much undiscovered gold when it comes to people analyzing it, compared to more succesful IP's like Resident Evil or lasting cult classics like Silent Hill 2. An interesting detail I still think about to this day is the direction of the sunflowers on Laura and Ruben's barn fire flashback. They all face the cloudy darkness looming instead of the actual sun, the opposite of how plants work in reality. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but this is just one of what I'm certain are many things I still haven't discovered that I don't see a lot of people talk about. Major props for the effort and quality.

My friend just showed me your silent hill video. I have never played that game but I loved silent hill 3 when it came out (the only one I ever owned) and I have enjoyed the series from the periphery ever since, I have dipped in and out of the other games but I never really had access to many games when I was growing up. It has everything I love, dark symbolism, eerie locations and settings, creepy psychedelic qualities and insightful observations about evil and human nature. I feel like 'Evil Within' looks to be another game full of these things. I really loved your last video man, you have the symbolic eye and it really shows in your analysis. I got home and the first thing I'm doing before going bed is watching this one, really looking forward to hearing what you have to say and experiencing another game I never got the chance to play. Keep up the great work man, if you persistently release content like this you are going to do well on here for sure. I for one will be keeping a close eye on this channel. I am only 26 mins in the video while writing this so I don't know if you mentioned this.but Im guessing not a lot of people pay attention to their surroundings because the cult were worshippers of an ancient race of giants (nephilim), on chapter 6 you fight 2 giants, who were once human but we're injected with giant DNA, later it's hinted through environmental story telling the the church building and the catacombs were built by said giants and was retrofitted for humans, you see giant doorways and giant coffins, along with human sized coffins. In the small lab in the catacombs there is a giant brain, a giant spine in test tanks, as well as a partial giant in a water tank that follows you with his gaze wherever you walk .They were sacrificing humans to the spirits of said giants, in one area in the catacombs there is a group of victims arranged in a circle, to the side is a giant skull and a full giant skeleton, the cult was trying to bring back the nephilim race, it's no different from umbrella, tyrant or more appropriatly TITAN, yes umbrella was into science but also into the occult, you can see it even in the first title....there is a lot more but I'll let you do the rest of the digging for yourselves...there is a hidden story
