The splithead worm does have symbolism. It's a recall to the splithead lizard in the first game. It's like a bad dream returning. The scraper and missionary are wearing outfits like Valtiel and much like the ones found in the background of the otherworld school in SH1. SH3 is like SH1 repeated as Heather recovers her memories. The symbolism begins to overlap more and more.

@@leebattersby1573 "Silent Hill: Origins has some keys to understand the entire world of Silent Hill and the other games. Playing this game will help people better understand those mysteries." - Akira Yamaoka It's okay to not like it and to not personally consider it canon, but if a core Team Silent member and the producer of Silent Hill 3 & 4 says it's canon, then I'm inclined to also think so. Merely food for thought, no need to shut down innocent headcanons you don't like.

Akira may say that, but he didn't write the story. The nightmare did not appear until the other half of Alessas' soul reappeared in Silent Hill as Cheryl. Not only that, but Alessa is actively trying to rid Silent Hill of the nightmare as dipicted in Silent Hill 1, whereas she spread it herself in Origins. A contraction and one of many, unfortunately. With that said, headcannon away. I personally believe origins, homecoming and downpour are all part of the own timeline and nothing to do with SH 1 through 4.

My ultimate guess as to why they didn't go with symbolism with the monsters because Heather practically can see Silent Hill in it's true form. There's also the strange fact that Silent Hill tried to kill Heather even though she carried "God" in her so I think Silent Hill is a separate entity entirely. I think Silent Hill was literally trying to stop Heather by trying to scare her with monsters specifically designed to do just that. My guess it's some sort of "holy ground" that reacts to whomever is there. Silent Hill literally was trying to get James to confront himself which is also odd in itself because that entire situation didn't even lead to any "God" trying to be released. It's as though it's like a place that grants wishes, punishments or desires in the most messed up way.

No. Alessa's ghost or psychic imprint on the town was trying to kill her to stop the Cult's plan of resurrecting their God. Alessa was formerly a child who the Cult thought would be the mother of their God. However, she was burnt in an accidental house fire and kept on life support by the Cult's hospital. Given her traumatic childhood and social alienation, she bears no love for the church and wishes for them to fail. Because of her central importance to the cult's religion, she somehow managed to remain as a presence in the town over the years. The other cult members you encounter are trying to to manipulate or kill Heather because of their own religious interpretations and biases. Heather is the reincarnation Alessa, birthed from the good ending of SH1 and adopted by Harry as his daughter. She is a Holy Mother figure similar to Mary from Christianity. So whether she likes it or not, Heather is a pawn in their power games. Claudia is a sincere believer who thinks resurrecting their God will bring about a utopian world full of kindness and peace. This is probably a reflection of her own abusive childhood and her friendship with Alessa. She does believe in God, but wants an escape from her abusive past and a world she views as ugly and is genuinely sorry that Heather/Alessa is a necessary sacrifice for that goal. She probably reasons that she can make up for Alessa and her lost childhood after-the-fact when their God is born. She kills Harry to motivate Heather to pursue her into the town for revenge. But being that Heather is the Holy Mother, that's exactly where Claudia wants her. Leonard is a fanatic who thinks Claudia heretic and tries to kill Heather because she's an outsider and a heretic too. He was probably an abusive father to Claudia and views himself as a knightly defender of the church who dispatches the wicked. We don't know what he believes or why he believes it, but it's safe to say that he probably views Heather as an imposter he has to kill. Vincent is a more rational and self-interested senior priest who profited by the church's donations. Whether he was a true believer or was only in it for the money is academic. Claudia thinks he isn't a true believer while Vincent rightly sees her as delusional and insane. Whatever is happening in the town, he recognizes it's bad news and wants to stop Claudia from succeeding and (mistakenly) has Heather obtain a relic that he thinks will stop Claudia's ritual. The town's psychic power reflects its inhabitants, that's true, but it's long been polluted by the Cult's rituals and activities to the point that Alessa is a permanent ghostly presence and the monsters there are ugly and dangerous. The town isn't a purgatory. It doesn't punish and it doesn't reward. It's a house of mirrors where the rules of reality start to break down. The Cult tried to use this property of the town to basically use a magical ritual to bring their God into existence. The problem is that this entity probably isn't flowers and sunshine, it's just some idiot monster that reflects the biases and deeds of its creators. Japan doesn't have a positive opinion of mass religious movements like this one, owing to its own relationship to the Unity Cult there. And the Cult of the story got up to shady dealings like drug trafficking and probably abused and exploited its members in the way Jehovah's Witnesses or evangelists might. And the town, being a psychic reflection of its people, probably picked up a lot of that pain, grief and cruelty along the way.

Watching these deep dives has made me realise the connections between the enemies. Not just sh1 and sh3 but the connection of these two games to sh2 which is a departure from the Alessa/cult storyline. I really like the idea that the powers of the town have consistent design aspects that aren't necessarily significant to one character.

While I understand that you wanted to keep everything factual, I don't think that just because there was no intentional symbolism behind some of the monster designs, that it means there truly is none. Art is not defined by intention and often says more about the artist than they themself realize. Regardless, another great video, always appreciate your detailed looks at these games.
@PatchV25
@PatchV25 Жыл бұрын
I think you're denying a lot of clear symbolism. If you're only basing your videos of stated intent rather than engaging with the media itself you're doing yourself and the viewer a disservice. Just because a developer doesn't mention everything that went into the design decisions does not mean that there aren't deeper meanings. Apart from that I think you did a good job explaining everything else. It's just hard to ignore the obvious symbolic designs of the creatures as they relate to things like pregnancy (and it being forced upon Heather), unnatural growth, invasion of personal space especially by oddly phallic creatures. There's just so much to go into that hand waving it all away feels really bad.
@Something775
@Something775 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it was honestly a little frustrating. The Closer for example was depicted in one of Alessa's drawings standing in for an adult, a figure of authority, and was designed with the intention of restricting Chery's ability to move about the map, to deny her autonomy and trap her into a corner. On its head it bears Japanese text which references the lotus sutra which is a highly important piece of Buddhist doctrine. That's all just the basic facts, but I could probably write an entire essay extrapolating on the meaning of the little details throughout like the hidden blade in its arm. Even just looking at the simple facts, it seems utterly absurd to say that it has no symbolic meaning, even moreso to say that the theories surrounding it have "no evidence" to support them. The split worm is a creature locked behind a door decorated in symbols of fertility which emerges from holes and is shaped in a manner which heavily resembles male genitalia. Violent phallic imagery and symbols of fertility tied into a single boss fight in a game about an unwanted pregnancy, gee I wonder what that could mean. The list goes on and on. Insane cancer, missionary, slurper, pendulum(I mean come on this one is especially obvious) even the numb body. Granted Ito stated that the Numb Body didn't mean anything, but he's also not the one that designed it so I don't consider him to be an absolute authority on that particular creature design. Not to disrespect the man, but knowing him I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he even unintentionally undervalued the contributions of the other artists compared to his own. Still, I am willing to accept that a good amount of the enemies in the game probably are just scary monsters, but nowhere near all of them and probably not even most of them either.
@DeepDives
@DeepDives Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for the criticism. Sadly, my videos are not going to please everyone, purely because I chose the route of stated fact when collecting the information I need for them. With so may opinions on the interest of what everyone thinks things mean in video games, I just wanted to stick to known facts. Yes, I could give my opinion, but at this stage, I don't really feel I can add anything. If I was going to talk about what I thought about certain subjects and their symbolism, I'd probably do that in a separate video, if it's something people wish to see. I'm not trying to hand wave anything away, I'm just stating facts that I've come across that I've triple checked. I also appreciate that I'm not always going to get everything correct, as much as I'd like to. I'm sure there is hidden meanings that were intended by designers, but unless I can find any clear source of the fact, I run the risk of saying it and then getting called out anyway for being wrong or misinterpreting it. Either way, I'm in a losing situation. I'm not here to cause discourse or file up any fan bases. I just want to make good videos on games I love.

@@DeepDives For what it's worth I really did like your video, I thought it was extremely well put together and researched and I look forward to seeing more from you in the future. I wasn't put off by your refusal to speculate on the monster designs as I think that's a wise move, but rather your repeated insistence that each design had no meaning whatsoever. There's a difference between taking a neutral stance versus coming down with an outright negative one. Specifically your claim that the various theories surrounding them had "zero evidence" is what most got under my skin. I can't say with absolute certainty what the split-worm or the Closer represent and I'll always refrain from doing so, but it seems pretty apparent to me that they have to represent *something* if nothing else just due to all of the very specific details included in their designs and presentations. Again, I didn't work on the game and I'll never be able to say for sure exactly what it all means when you put it together, but that doesn't mean that any theories we construct around these details are baseless. Instead of saying (paraphrasing)"fan theories exist, but there's zero evidence to support them" you might consider saying "fan theories exist, but I'm not here today to speculate, only to provide the definitive and inarguable facts of the matter and as such I will not be covering any of those theories". The latter is both more accurate and less inflammatory. The way you present it is makes it seem that one of the things you consider to be a fact is that the monsters all unquestionably have no meaning whatsoever, which I consider to be demonstrably false.

It's rare to find creators delving into modern games with such depth, so perhaps exploring more recent titles could attract a younger audience. If the remake of No. 02 turns out to be solid, it could be a prime chance to ride the hype.

There are clues in the games which might suggest the town is not just manifesting monsters and strange architecture but also playing with time and the possibility of parallel dimensions. In SH1 and SH3, the Nowhere and Chapel levels are a mishmash of rooms relating to Alessa's trauma, like the Midwich Elementary classroom, Harry's bedroom, Alessa's sickroom, and Alessa's childhood bedroom. Silent Hill 2 featured historical monuments and James explores the prison area (or a manifestation of it anyway). Possibly, the little side stories are things that have happened in the past and the town is just manifesting them into the nightmare levels or maybe the town is just a malevolent entity making up stuff to torture Heather. I think it's a little of both. Maybe there was a creature in the sewers and the workers were dumb enough to try to kill it themselves. I've heard a credible theory that the sewer monster is a manifestation of the fear of the unknown.

An interesting thing about the Slurper, the first time you see it is in the sewer when crossing the bridge in the water. When you cross the bridge again, its gone. You don't encounter it again until you fight it in the Other World later in the game if I'm not mistaken. Mentioning what you said about creatures being in the real world, I like to think Heather/Alessa's powers were so great because she was about to give birth to "God" which was growing inside her, it caused the creatures to be drawn to her from the Other World and sort of phasing into the Real World without her realizing it.

I watched each of your explainatory videos after watching Silent Hill games playthroughs and you always deliver. I went through SH 1 and SH 2 .. then came here after watching SH 3. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't learn of Jacob's Ladder, go and watch it and add a masterpiece of a movie to my collection of favourites. I just watched the movie as I paused your video to go and check it and though I no longer have enough time to go through this video, I wanted to leave a comment now. Thanks a lot for your passionate effort in putting these videos together. It shows and the details you include are truly appreciated.

There is one more mini bad ending happened around the time when Heather is about to birth God. Just straight up attack Claudia without taking the pill. The screen will turn black and you heard Claudia happy dialog while God is born. This will give a game over however.

It's weird that the numb body and split worm "have no symbolism" I mean some things are very out in the open, no matter if Ito wants to shed light onto them or not. Heather has a lot of sexual / reproductive anxieties. Just like abstract daddy, you don't need ito to come out and say "that's a penis" to be able to believe it.

Yeah it’s a little strange, but I’m only here to present spoken or written facts. People are free to interpret symbolism however they want from their consumed media and I am certainly not an authority to tell people how to think. I’ll happily tell people what I think in reviews, but these videos are not reviews, they are deep dives into facts.

i’ve actually been binging these videos. i used to love the movie when i was younger and watched people play the first game on youtube but being like 7 r 8 i never actually understood them. I saw that the remake of the second one was coming out and wanted to see the story of the second one before it came out and searched up all the cutscenes and was completely confused when i finished. I found your deep dive and it explained it perfectly and now i’m just sitting watching all these videos. The games remind me of resident evil and being HUGE resident evil fan i’m really happy i’ve found a game similar. I still love the silent hill movie but after watching all the stories to the games makes me a bit disappointed to the movie because there was so much more from the game they could’ve added to the movies.

@@DeepDives Thought I should add my own thoughts to the symbolism of this game, I very much believe they couldn't focus on a lot of the symbolism of this entry because they were working on the plot and themes of Silent Hill 4 during 3's development as well, so they put more of their writing team on 4 and just wanted to elaborate on the pre-existing themes of Silent Hill 1. Doesn't mean the game is bad, I love it to death but you can tell this entry had to cut some corners here and there
