This has always been my favorite Silent Hill plot. As someone who always feels comfortable in my room the most, being in a situation where you unable to leave, and the place you feel the most safe is becoming unsafe... yeah.

A lot of folks call foul on this game not actually taking place in Silent Hill, but to me it just adds to the horror. It shows that no matter how tiny and tangential, if you have _any_ connection to Silent Hill (i.e. living in the apartment where a kid who wound up being raised by the cult was born), there’s a chance you might still fall victim to it.

A demo version included on a CD-ROM from the gaming magazine LEVEL was my first contact with this game back in 2004, here in Romania. It featured the first chapter of the game, until Cynthia's death in the subway. That's when I got immersed in this universe and especially when I discovered Akira Yamaoka. I downloaded the "Room of Angel" song as mp3 from some fan website and I had that on repeat, constantly, for about two weeks on my portable mp3 player. Silent Hill 4 is a masterpiece in my opinion.

I also always thought another connection with Silent Hill 2 was in the bar in SH2, with the message, there was a HOLE here, it’s gone now. That message never really made sense to me, but will SH4 came out I was like ohhh, maybe the hole was James method to escape, similar to Henry, but it’s gone now. But that’s just me and my head canon.

With SH4 you can tell they were moving in the direction of the evil in the town spreading to other places outside of SH much like what Silent Hill F is doing and what SH3 and 4 did with their premise

I forgot where I read it, but the burping noise from the one enemy is supposed to represent gas leaving a corpses body. And it took some time, but absolutely love SH4

Literally replaying it now. This one has the best introduction. The way the cutscenes are done are more creepy. The scary aspects of SH4 is different than the others where the others are simply just about darkness and bad controls😂. This is the one Sh game I played the most as a kid. Although it's not as dark ,the main antagonist is by far the best ever ,not close . Also I love how they literally made a SH game based on a short message in a newspaper found in Sh2 . That's so cool to me . The best part by far of SH4 is the room. I literally bought this game based off the box art of the chained door . This room is actually the start of PT and every PT clone with a creepy 1st person home. Who would have thought that the most controversial SH game would literally spawn a whole new horror genre 😂😂😂. I will always respect SH4 for this

I remember visiting SH forums years before KZbin. For SH 4, I remember it was a 50-50 shot whether or not fans liked it. The game has its issues, but it's definitely a solid SH title.

Keeping an umbilical cord isn’t strange in Japan. In ancient times they would be used to treat illness in the child and reportedly saved many lives. Honestly, I can understand people's problems with this game but I have to say, I was really fucking scared on those first-person sections. I'll never forget the feeling of experiencing that for the first time. Maybe I was too young, easily impressed, I don't know, but that has solidified the game as a good game in my memory. I wish they attempt to capture the feeling of this game again in the future.

6:55 I think he's pretty much saying when it comes to making a new Silent Hill they've always wanted to branch away from the town itself which is apparent with The Room and the cancelled Team Silent's Silent Hill 5. Which I think they did a phenomenal job! Not only do we see that the evil from Silent Hill can reach beyond its borders, but they used your "safe room" as the doorway between the Otherworld. I also think what the Western Silent Hill's did to the town was an absolute tragedy, returning to Silent Hill after The Room showed that they weren't limited to the town was a step back. I just hope with the announcements of multiple Silent Hill's that aren't set in Silent Hill we can see a return to the ideas that The Room was laying out.

I don't understand how this game took the risk of changing it up and succeeded in some parts, but ridiculously failed in other parts. Why are those enemies burping? Why are some monsters lame? Why would they have wall man make sections nearly unplayable?

There's always risk with change and you won't always get it right. SH4 should have been a learning experience for them but the games that came after... well, you know the history.

Silent Hill 4 is a a bit underrated. Never understood that hate for it. Sure its story isn’t as good as SH2 or SH3, but if it were released today (for today’s standards), you better bet it would be hailed as one of the greatest horror games and more critically acclaimed, but instead had a very rough following. People eventually opened up to it I guess..

I got the best ending but I swear I didn't clear any hauntings in my room from what I remember, I guess I did because I got the good ending and it's been a while but I don't remember using any candles or swords to pin anyone...maybe Cynthia...idk it's been years so I must of. Also I didn't know anyone didn't like it that much, I've heard homecoming is better then 4 but ugh I hate homecoming. I loved this one.

The general consensus felt like a 60/40 split on love vs hate (this is just a guess). Although I’m pretty sure universally, Homecoming is liked less than 4.

Silent hill 4 and resident evil 4 were anomalies. They diverged a bit from the horror genre but remained true to their core. Every other game AFTER them failed miserably cause they thought they could do it too

They diverged so much from the story that were completely a different game, they just used the resident evil IP to gain attraction of an already successful franchise which is fked up for the real resident evil fans and fanbase who spent so many years on it. For example RE 7 and 8, they could have named it "supernatural the game" and it would have been by a lot more accurate than resident evil. And it's not the only franchise that did that, silent hill did the same (although with lesser mistakes), final fantasy did the same. They no longer make games for gamers and their fan base, they make games for tourists and grifters. Which is why double A and indie games are on the rise while triple A started to fall little by little
