in reality, no one would survive such a collision. Only a few miraculously saved people would wander through the scorched wastelands, as in the film "The Road" but this film conveys interesting feelings...you can feel the approach of the inevitable end

Addie! Thanks so much for doing this one. I see "Armageddon" out the wazoo; every corner I turn, it's there; every reactor is doing it. It is an entertaining film, but "Deep Impact" is a film that tugs at the heart. It's warm, thoughtful, and serious. It's so overlooked by reactors. I guess if you like wham-bam, then it might not be your cup of tea; but I find this film emotionally compelling and something that I could watch repeatedly. Kudos to Mimi Leder, the director, for crafting this wonderful film.

It's weird how often two similar movies come out near each other like this. "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact," "K-9" and "Turner and Hooch," "Volcano" and "Dante's Peak," and more recently "The Equalizer" and "John Wick." It's just a really interesting phenomenon.
@emperorlelouch8515

I recall seeing an explanation of this phenomenon. They are called "twin films." It occurs when two similar scripts enter production around the same time, because multiple studios consider the shared idea to have market appeal and compete to see who can put it out first.

Armageddon and Deep Impact came out in 1998, just a few years after the comet Shoemaker Levy 9 collided with Jupiter in July, 1994. That was the first time that anyone witnessed a planet-comet collision, and it generated much subsequent discussion about what can conceivably be done, if something similar were to be on a crash course with the earth. Armageddon and Deep Impact both came out in the midst of those discussions, so in the context of the time, it was not too surprising that both films appeared at about the same time.

From WV, if you never seen the Blue Ridge, you need to. It is a wall of rock that spans several states with few breaks or passes, even a highway on top. Great reaction. Personally, I like Deep Impact much more than Armageddon. But anyway, now you have to do Don't Look Up and Greenland. 😃 P.S. The title "Deep Impact" has multiple meanings in this movie. Obviously it refers to the physical impact of the comet hitting earth, but it also refers to the psychological/emotional impact on society and people's lives. That's why the movie shows more of the "humanity side" as you put it (around 29:00 - 29:30), than Armageddon did.

Just be thankful we have Jupiter and Saturn out there hoovering up all the wayward rocks and iceballs that decide to take a vacation in the inner orbits, most of the time... me personally, if it turned out we had no chance to survive id take it as an opportunity to witness something few have ever seen as a last act.

Through 1997 one of the big news stories doing the rounds was the idea that an extinction level event could happen at any moment, and the theories of how it might dealt with were explored. Really freaked me out as a kid. Responding to that two studios decided to make films that used that concept. The first one out was Deep Impact, about 5 weeks before Armageddon. Didn't make as much money as Armageddon but didn't cost as much - wasn't full of bankable named stars. The difference in tone between the two films is startling. I always preferred the more serious dramatic tone of Deep Impact over the kind of tongue in cheek humour and gung-honess of Armageddon. I remember thinking, when I saw Armageddon, 'Why can't they take it seriously?' I took the threat seriously and I was pissed, at the time, that Armageddon didn't really. Felt that would lead to people not taking it seriously... Now question is, do you take it seriously? Was I right? Are we ignoring the chance of saving the human race because we saw Armageddon, so don't take the threat necessarily seriously enough to invest any time and effort in space projectile monitoring? For the record this was directed by one of the very few female directors working in Hollywood at the time, Mimi Leder. She also directed the first Dreamworks feature film, The Peacemaker (I believe Deep Impact was the second). She would go on to direct Pay It Forward (2000) with Helen Hunt (Twister), Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) and Kevin Spacey (think you know him). If you've not seen it, add it to your list. The term 'pay it forward' was coined by that film, if you've ever heard that expression.

@@bujin1977 Oh, agreed, that part sounds rediculous if so, don't remember "all" the details, but I know that eventually the north atlantic current shut down which kickstarts the weather changes. That's the part I was referring to.

I saw both Armageddon and Deep Impact when they came out in theaters and I loved them both. I do not think one was necessarily better than the other, but I felt that Deep Impact,, for me, had more of an emotional punch. Not to mention that great score by the late, great James Horner. He made some great music in his time on this world. And I recommend looking for some of Morgan Freeman's early roles from before he became the name he is today. The earliest movie I can remember seeing him in is the 1980 film Brubaker, with Robert Redford. It was only a small scene, but he was in it.

There was a 3rd movie that was made years later... same basic concept except instead of going into space, they tunnelling into the Earth. It was called The Core. It had some popular names, but not a good movie.

I watched both movies in the theatre when they were released and have them both on DVD and have watched them several times since. I always felt Armageddon was like a comic book and Deep Impact was like a novel. They can both be good but are vastly different types of storytelling.

"i'm ok. I'm ok." Said no person in history who is ok. This one showed the trials, the sorrow... the realism, where armagedon showed... heroism, and triumph. They are very different, and honestly I think Deep Impact is more true to what would happen. There is hope, but first there is tragedy.

Love me a good disaster movie! I’ve lost count of the times that I’ve seen this and Dante’s Peak in my 39 years 🤪 A more recent movie that I really enjoyed was Greenland 👍 You need to react to that one as well!

Yup, James Horner also did a few Star Trek movies... when he was asked to score Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan in 1982. It established him as an A-list Hollywood composer. :) He also went on to work on Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

9:35 - this scene is completely ridiculous. Younger generation of astronauts has an ENORMOUS respect and veneration of the older generation. In real life they would never say anything like that to a space veteran. Instead of sitting there, they'd be lining up to express their admiration and ask for an autograph.

So much less hokey and real than Armageddon. Armageddon tried to be quippie and funny, but Deep Impact gives you the ability to empathize with how real people might react not Micheal Bay style phonies

Similarly to the way Armageddon and Deep Impact are connected by year of release and theme, you should eventually also watch Dante's Peak and Volcano. And while we're mentioning disaster movies, also you should see 2012 and Greenland, two very similar disaster movies.

For a really good Morgan Freeman movie (and Jessica Tandy) you should watch, Driving Miss Daisy. Jessica, who won, is the oldest Best Actress Oscar winner ever. Another good Morgan Freeman movie is Glory.

Both of these movies serve a purpose... ARMEGEDDON was the action flick, DEEP IMPACT was very character driven. Both great! Though I'd love to see DEEP IMPACT made into a multi-season streaming series, given how much they pack into it.
