I’m 70 years old and I just love seeing your generation reacting to my fave hard rock/heavy metal music from late 60s to early/mid 70s. Saw DP in concert in 1974. The keyboard player is Jon Lord (RIP) and he is playing a cut down Hammond P3 organ. He was classically trained. Lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore formed Rainbow with Ronnie James Dio in 1975 after DP broke up. If you loved Child in Time I am certain you will love Stargazer by Rainbow and it’s follow up/sequel A Light in the Black. Other DP songs worth listening to are Space Truckin, Strange Kind of Woman, Perfect Strangers, My Woman from Tokyo, Black Night and Burn.

It baffles me that so many people know Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Who and Pink Floyd, but don't really know of Deep Purple, and yet they sold as many records as the others but somehow have been forgotten, maybe they should have had a more iconic logo, but in terms of musicianship they were as good as anyone in their mark II line up.

Awesome my dear, they did this very live with a dead audience told to keep quiet for TV. When I first saw them a few years later we were anything but quiet! AND They were anything but quiet, in those days they held the Guiness World Record for loudest band for awhile, we saw them indoors in New Haven then later that tour, outside in Hartford, huge PAs, the outdoor show you could have heard miles away as they set up in the flat, open field of Colt Park and just turned it up and let rip. Tremendous performers who knew how to handle that sound system. The cost? $5.50, LOL! Try Space Trucking live sometime from the 1970s, it will blow your mind! Enjoy. 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

I remember the guys telling on an interview that when Child in Time was recorded and mixed they listened to the master tape together and then sat in silence, realizing they had surpassed themselves and created something extraordinary. The organ sounds the same because it's not a keyboard (which is input device for general purpose synthesizers) but full instrument with sound fixed like a piano would.

Entering stage they announced that they'd chosen a new name for the band: _"Deep Purple"._ This was the very first Deep Purple concert ever. It was shortly before I was born. This is one of the wildest vocal performances ever recorded. Another reactor rightly called this "controlled chaos". The crowd was made to be quiet because they were recording this. The keyboard being played is a Hammond B3 / C3 organ that is full of electronic tubes and run into Leslie speaker cabinets. This particular lineup of band members is commonly called the Mark II version of Deep Purple and is responsible for most of their hit records. I love to watch your reactions! Keep them coming!

Black Night got me hooked at age 11 bought 45 rpm vinyl single, not enough money to buy the album.Machine Head was my first album of theirs and Space Truckin' was my standout for me. Black Night and Space Truckin' must be played loud, through big speakers and an Amp with big grunty grunt.

Deep Purple is one of the founders of heavy metal. I think this performance was recorded in 1970, which would've been in the early days of metal. For a lot of people in the audience, it was probably the first time they had ever been exposed to it. I think there would've been a lot of "What the heck did we just watch?!"

Do you know what? It makes me happy to see how much you enjoy this song but, you really should have been there. (I don't mean at that particular show but rather that whole time period. But it is what it is and it's fabulous that we still have these recordings of what the world was like way back when.…)

John Lord was a keyboard genius, my neighbour and a really great guy. Superstar yes in a super group but also so down to earth and easy ti chat too. Back in June 1990 i was with a couple of friends at a Gary Moore concert in London, had had a few beers and needed to take a break and go for a leek.I was doing the buisness in the cubicle when i noticed the guy stannding next to me also have a waz was none other than Hohn Lord,. We got chatting and shared a couple more beers at the bar, and i mentioned to John we were near neighbours living in the same village in South Oxfordshire. Subsequently John invite myself and my two friends to meet up with him the following week at his local pub in the village for a few more beers and a chat about our shared interestt in rock music. He also invited along, Ian Gillian ( the vocalist) and from that day i could call Lord and Gillian personal friends who i woukd share many conversations and beers with over the next 5 or 6 years until my job moved me from South Oxfordshire north to Cheshiire in the summer of 1998

"He's a God". Yes, Jon Lord is God (or was God, R.I.P.). Such an under appreciated band, especially for all the world events they were a soundtrack to. Everybody in the band is a legend. Ritchie Blackmore is one of my favorite guitar players (maybe musician). I think he "sees" sound or something, he uses his guitar like a paint brush.

Damn... how glad I am to have some older brothers. And one of them really liked this kind of music and especially Deep Purple. He had a bunch of LPs of that too. When he was working I used to sneak into his room to put on a record of this or other hard rock bands from the late sixties and seventies. I think I was about 10-15 years old at the time. I always thought he never knew I sneaked into his room and played his records. Many, many years later he told me he did knew, even bought some records he thought I would like... and that I did not knew. 😊😊🙂

Yes, this was live on Swedish TV in 1970... Deep Purple had just relaunched themselves as a hard rock band w/ a new singer (Ian Gillan) and bassist (Roger Glover)... the album 'In rock'... w/ (the late) Jon Lord (organ/ keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) and the legendary Ritchie Blackmore (guitar)... The audience had likely been told not to go crazy, but had also never seen a band that intense - this brand of hard rock from the British "Unholy Trinity" of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple was very new at the time in 1970, and they certainly didn't sound like The Beatles or The Beach Boys. Jon Lord was a classically-trained pianist and he was the band's 'genius'... he played his keyboards through a guitar amp, so that he could balance the sound w/ Ritchie Blackmore's guitar. Sadly, Jon Lord passed away in 2012 from cancer (R.I.P.) and he had left Deep Purple amicably in 2002 to focus of classical music projects. He was so articulate in interviews as well... such a gentleman, and had played w/ Ian Paice (drums) for most of his life, even outside of Deep Purple. In 1968, Deep Purple was formed in London as a pop rock band w/ Rod Evans (vocals) and Nick Simper (bass)... the band had some American success w/ cover songs like - 'Hush'... 'Kentucky woman'... 'Lalena'... But in 1969, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore wanted to explore the new 'heavy rock' sound by bands like Jimi Hendrix Experience and Led Zeppelin... so, Evans and Simper were fired, and Ian Gillan joined the band as the new singer, w/ Roger Glover on bass (Glover would write some lyrics and co-produce the band's records)... Jon Lord (keyboards) also recorded a 'Concerto' album w/ Deep Purple playing w/ a classical orchestra in 1969. Opting to record 'heavy rock'... Deep Purple released the single 'Black night'... and then the album 'In rock' in 1970... They became a hit in the UK and Europe very quickly... 'Fireball' (1971) and 'Machine head' (1972) albums followed... but it was the 'Made in Japan' live album in 1972 that truly made Deep Purple a phenomenon worldwide... But after the next album 'Who do we think we are' (1973), the band's turmoil pushed Ian Gillan out of the line-up... Roger Glover left after Blackmore demanded he be fired, if he was to stay in Deep Purple. Deep Purple got even bigger in 1974 w/ David Coverdale (vocals) and Glenn Hughes (bass + vocals) joining for the 1974 albums 'Burn' and 'Stormbringer'... but Ritchie Blackmore was becoming more frustrated and left Deep Purple in 1975 to form the band Rainbow w/ singer ronnie James Dio... American guitarist Tommy Bolin joined for 1 album in 1975 ('Come taste the band')... but it wasn't a major success without Blackmore... After a difficult tour, Deep Purple disbanded in 1976... Tommy Bolin passed away from a OD soon after (R.I.P.)... and David Coverdale formed his band Whitesnake, which went on to commercial success. In 1984, Deep Purple reunited w/ Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord and Ian Paice for the 'Perfect strangers' comeback album... but the same problems arose between Gillan and Balckmore by the 1987 album 'House of blue light'... Ian Gillan was fired in 1989... Former Rainbow singer Joe Lynn Turner recorded 1 Deep Purple album 'Slaves and masters' (1990), but Ian Gillan was rehired for the 25th anniversary tour and the album 'The battle rages on'... However, the temperamental Ritchie Blackmore quit Deep Purple in late 1993. Opting to carry on in 1994, Deep Purple hired Steve Morse (guitar) and recorded the albums 'Purpendicular' (1996) and 'Abandon' (1998)... In 2002, former Rainbow keyboardist Don Airey replaced Jon Lord and the band carried on recording & touring... In 2022, w/ Deep Purple nearing the end of their career, Steve Morse opted to leave and Simon McBride (guitar) has been toruing w/ the band since.

Good text, just a few small remarks. 1. This is British television, not Swedish; 2. Mark 3 has never been more popular, even though Burn ranked higher than WDWTWA in the British and American charts, and the line-up itself performed at the biggest concert in California, but this was achieved by the labors and talents of Mark 2.

@@ninoorjon OK, rebuttal: 1. Yes, British TV. Correction... 2. Mark III of Deep Purple was a commercial peak in the band's history... they were selling more records in 1974 - '75 than the Mark II line-up... 'Burn' and 'Stormbringer' went gold faster than any of the previous Deep Purple records. Mark III played much bigger shows & tours (one could argue, yes, on the catalog of Mark II). U seem to forget that Deep Purple broke up in 1976 after the Mark IV line-up... It was afterwards when the compilation 'Deepest purple' was released in 1980 when the Mark II line-up truly got their due. That record went platinum while the band was still broken up, and the demand for a Deep Purple Mark II reunion became overwhelming (By that point, David Coverdale had Whitesnake... Glenn Hughes was in bad shape from drug abuse) So, it made sense to reunite the Mark II of Deep Purple in 1984 and 'Perfect strangers' was a massive comeback album, selling platinum and pushed sales of Deep Purple's catalog up again and made the Mark II line-up the more popular one. Deep Purple Mark I actually sold decently in America (not so much in the UK at the time)... but when Mark II came out, they became big in Europe, but US fans still wanted Mark I songs on tour in 1970... It wasn't until 'Made in Japan' in 1972 and 'Machine head' that Deep Purple exploded in America once again by 1973.

@@sumonjamal1653 This is a bad place to argue, but no, you're wrong. Deep Purple became the biggest selling band in the world in 1973 after WDWTWA - sales of this album were added by sales of Maid In Japan and Machine Head. In terms of tours, Mark 1 played approximately 133 gigs in 16 months; Mark 2 - 515 gigs in 35 months; Mark 3 - 111 gigs in 17 months; Mark 4 - 55 gigs in 4 months, although the quality of the last concerts is legendary, they were so bad. And yes, in 1970, Mark 2 had few concerts in the USA, but in 71 there were already enough of them, but they managed to hold only 23 concerts, and then Gillan got hepatitis and had to interrupt the tour, and the 72nd really was record tour in the US. Mark 2 has 9 platinum albums in different countries, 3 of them in the USA, none of the others. And another platinum compilation you mentioned - Deepest Purple - in which out of 12 songs there are two songs of Mark 3. As you can see, the rest of the lineups do not even come close to the indicators of the second Mark either in concerts, or in platinum albums, or in the love of the people.

@@ninoorjon Kid, u lost the argument... so don't try weasel out, calling this a 'bad place'... and quit trying to ramble your way out of your claims w/ statistics about Deep Purple's gigs and quality (and if Mark III concerts were so bad, why do they keep issuing live albums from that line-up?)... We know Mark II played more gigs from 1969 to 1973, whereas Mark III played between 1974 and 1975... Only Mark III shows were much bigger and much more profitable (The band said that even after 'Made in Japan' was a hit, the band was still in debt). Even Mark IV (w/ Tommy Bolin on guitar) was selling out huge arenas and stadiums on tour... It was the internal turmoil and the tour mishaps that ended the band. Yes, the Mark II line-up of Deep Purple is the bigger success NOW, but that was not the case back in 1976. Only after 1984 did Deep Purple Mark II get their dues and credit. Furthermore, there are plenty of acts that sold more records after they were GONE - The Beatles are a prime example... Jimi Hendrix... The Doors... The Eagles... Janis Joplin... Bob Marley... Elvis Presley... The list goes on... 😈

@@ninoorjon Believe it or not... Ian Gillan (vocals) said that Deep Purple Mark II between 1987 and 1993 was not doing that great on tour or record sales... Ritchie Blackmore had become so erratic live that people lost interest... Deep Purple's concerts were poorly attended. Gillan said after Steve Morse (guitar) joined in 1994, Deep Purple had to work their way back up... but in a few years, the shows were bigger and selling out again, because the band had restored their live reputation and played the classics consistently 😈
