Really interesting that these guys rate Born Again so highly. I think it is a fantastic piece of vinyl in my collection and really drives very hard. The last Sabbath album (I think) with Bill, Geezer and Tony playing together. Lots of power, but some really great subtle drumming by Bill in places. Very clever.

As great as the Marsden Moody combo was, what I think really made those early Whitesnake albums was the bass playing of Neil Murray. For me when listening to the track, Fool For Your Lovin’ it is the bass that is the highlight, the bassline Murray came up with transforms that song from a great one to a stone cold classic.

For some reason the Green Bullfrog album is always overlooked in purple family tree reactions.Blackmore, Paice, Earl Jordan on vocals, Tony Ashton on hammond, Chas Hodges on bass and lots of other British blues guitar heroes. The vinyl and the cd are quite different from each other. The cd has more tracks and a different mix, but I love both of them.

Another excellent example of “The Two Peters Talk Purple!” I love these deep dives into Purple and their unique - and extensive - (black sheep of the) family tree. Everyone has their own choices for top tier DP and related picks, but there were some nice surprises on display here. And l agree with the honorable mention of the JLT/Yngwie combo platter. That’s always been my favorite Malmsteen album and l thought l was in the minority. If “two great music swamis”* feel the same way I do, then l feel vindicated after lo these many years. Great show guys, Peter Jones what a great #1 finale that nobody saw coming. I picked up a near mint copy of Jesus Christ Super star original pressing too, with the lyric prayer booklet. only cost me $13 australian dollars. I brought little box of Snakes awhile back also not delved into too much, I'm mostly familiar with Saints and Sinners onwards. Colin Towns was the main song writer in Gillan his keyboards are sooo crazy, love it! There were 10 of them - Lord, Blackmore, Paice, Evans, Simper, Gillan, Glover, Coverdale, Hughes and Bolin and they all created great music. So choosing the 10 best albums including Deep Purple is an overwhelming job for me personally. I love Deep Purple first of all, then I have tender feelings for Gillan’s groups and projects, followed by Lord’s albums - these are my top three.

Those ‘what ifs..’eh? Ritchie Blackmore wanted to take Ian Paice with him to form Baby Face with Phil Lynott. D.P’s management team vs Peter Grant. Please ask Glenn about Hughes/Thrall 2 and if they will reunite for an another album and tour? Even if they played the debut album in concert from start to finish,I would pay a hefty ticket price to see that! Glenn nowadays distances himself from the Phenomena recordings. Phenomena in-concert with the original audio visual multimedia 21 century presentation,would be a must go-to gig as long as Glenn is involved. What if D.P had had that break and Glenn hadn’t have left Trapeze… I think just a program ranking the Deep Purple family albums 77-83 would have been the way to go. Great show fellas!

Fireball was the album that got in to deep purple.. way back in 1975 saw my older brother cassette of fireball sitting next to a tape deck so put it in..then bought In rock then machine head - made in Japan who do we think we are and then burn..I was 13.. Black Sabbath first album and some more of their catalog. that was my introduction to hard rock.

Hi, Guys, enjoyed this, mostly agree with you both, haven't heard that Jon Lord solo album, will definitely check it out. One contrarian (Contrarian) point of view from me though, please: as a prog/jazz/jazz-rock fan I enjoy Ian Gillan's early solo output. I know it's not hard rock, but I think it works in its own way. I heard it first, even before much of the later stuff, on a strange compilation some years ago (on CD) and then later got the individual reissues of the albums and while I agree that the stuff made in the '80's is good too, I enjoy everything IG does outside of Purple.

Ready An Willing made it to 90 in the Billboard album charts. Fool For Your Loving made somewhere in the 50's in Billboards Hot 100 singles. The problem was Mirage didn't have good distribution. They were somehow connected with Atlantic. Bernie Marsden told me that they were told they were signing with Atlantic "proper". I was to see them in 81 in New Haven, Connecticut with Maiden & Priest but they never showed up. Bernie said by then they were discouraged, they played NY and decided to go home and skipped Connecticut. Bernie was a sweetheart of a man. He actually apologized to me over 40 after the fact for not playing that show.

Re: your forthcoming feature on the Phenomena albums.I will be interested in Pete Jones’ take on the drum production on the Phenomena debut. I have always had reservations on that front. Along with guitars mostly being buried in the mix and the overdone reverb wash that’s all over the debut. I am hoping that the rumoured rockier earlier mixes will be found for a future Anniversary box set along with a remix of the Phenomena debut. Glenn Hughes’ lead vocals on the Phenomena debut elevates some largely cliched/average sounding Rock flavoured compositions. The track Phoenix Rising still stands up today in 2024, and Twilight Zone has become an ear worm recently. Kiss Of Fire and Still The Night are sunk by the production of the day. I can appreciate that Tom Galley wanted to push the Phenomena debut into a crossover audience, instead of the denim and leather audience and made production choices to that end,but fell between two stools. A War Of Worlds pitch might have worked but Bronze Records went out of business before the album could make it to another level of success/sales.

I won't make a top ten for two reasons. One: I am not sure how to rank all these different bands and albums. Two: I must admit there are so many albums and I haven't listened to them all. Not nearly all of them.. With all the members and their different projects of the years. It's like a whole album collection only based around Deep Purple. However I do have some I like to write about and recommend that would rank high. Warhorse - Warhorse (1970) Nick Simper is probably the least famous member Deep Purple ever had. I am not knocking the guy or his talents but I believe many people have no clue who he is. However. After Jon Lord, Ritchie Blackmore and Ian Paice leaving him in a very strange way he quickly got up on his horse (pun intended) and created a new band. Warhorse. Their debut is actually a very solid hardrock album. I find this album an absolute gem. Captain Beyond - Captain Beyond (1972) It wasn't only Nick Simper who got left by the band... Singer Rod Evans was left behind as well. He got together with the band Captain Beyond and created a cult classic. I am not sure how much this have sold over the years but I know many who do hear it.. Love it. If you lean more to like progressive rock, art rock, space rock and things like that? This highly comes recommended. The Dixie Dregs - What If (1978) Steve Morse is by many famous for being "the other longed lived guitarist in Deep Purple". The truth is he has done more albums than most of the others in different bands. It all started in The Dixie Dregs. A band almost 100 % instrumental (with few exceptions) which has so many influences. I absolutely love it. Can be so catchy, rhythmic and fun or just simply beautiful. This album is really quite something. Steve Morse - High Tension Wires (1989) After playing in The Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse Band and Kansas Steve Morse decided to make an album in just his own name because.. Why not. While most his music is very "busy". This is somewhat more atmospheric and just quite beautiful. Jesus Christ Superstar (1970) So Ian Gillan got an opportunity doing this in his early days of Deep Purple. A concept album that has gotten a life of it's own. Ian Gillan just sings parts of this but everything is wonderful, powerful or even funny. I am not a huge guy for rock operas (I find myself only liking parts of them) but this one stands out. I am not sure how many younger fans who gives this a chance.. They should! Gary Moore - Victims of the Future (1984) Ian Paice had been kicked out of Whitesnake / left the band (I would really like know more about what really happened there) and started making some music with Gary Moore. I think this contains some of Gary Moores best work and perhaps Ian Paices as well. Just a very strong hardrock album.

If Deep Purple hadn't been worked so hard and split in 1973, we probably (if not definitely) wouldn't have had Rainbow, Whitesnake or Gillan. Now that's something for you to think about, and maybe discuss on another show. A what if...

They referred to BOC supporting Ourple and they were completely boring and the drummer completely screwed the wonderful Don't Fear etc. How can a drummer get that wrong. It is not difficult at all compared with the stuff Cozy Powell does with Rainbbo, Beck , Sabbath. Thank God Purple with Simin on guitar were superb.
