@@danielramsey6141 No, you're right, it was supposed to be the King Kong island because he was going to direct the KING KONG reboot to coincide/compete with the new GODZILLA. But when that bombed, the plan was scrapped and Sommers went off to make THE MUMMY. Peter Jackson picked up KONG and made it a retro-story. So those characters were probably going to be in the KING KONG reboot since they were already on the island, but what happened after that, we'll probably never know unless Sommers had notes and decides to share them some day.

A truly wonderful film. I found it on VHS and loved it. When Simon Canton first appeared, I thought "ooh! It's Nick Nolte". Then we realised "No! It's not Nick Nolte! It's Poor Man's Nick Nolte, Gary Busey!" then "No! It's poor man's Gary Busey..." Marvellous stuff. With the machine guns, they mention that they are Chinese assault rifles with cylindrical magazines that contain 1000 bullets or something. I think they DO run out towards the end of the film though. That ending/sequel hook was WONDERFUL. I was so hoping that there would have been a sequel. RIP Treat Williams.

It's supposed to be Skull Island. The ending was a lead-in for the modern-day reboot of KING KONG that Stephen Sommers was lined up to make. Then the 1998 GODZILLA movie bombed and the plan was scrapped; the KING KONG project was shlepped around Hollywood until Peter Jackson picked it up and did a retro-version of the story. Sommers decided to direct THE MUMMY with Brendan Frasier instead. As for what the monster was, I don't think we were ever going to find out because the sequel was probably going to pick up after they got off the beach.

From what I can gather, the ending scene was meant to tie this film in with Stephen Sommers reboot to King Kong. The film however was scrapped due to the box office bomb that was Roland Emmerich's Godzilla, and the responsibility was given to Peter Jackson later. I find it sad that it happened because there definitely was potential with this to set up a universe. Perhaps an earlier Monsterverse was planned before the Kong film was canned, but we'll never know.

Yeah, the island was supposed to be Skull Island and Kong was the creature who was moving towards them. I'm just curious how they planned to make a sequel for a broader audience given that they'd have to watch this to understand it and I don't see many parents letting their kids watch it. Unlike mine who, as long as a movie didn't have boobs, they didn't care what I watched. Lucked out and they gave Starship Troopers a pass cause it was just that good.

@@Not-TheOne I haven't watched the X-men movies after the first one, but I can tell you that in the comic books, characters are killed off all the time, only to return later, alive and well, sometimes as the same character from another timeline, or as a clone, or whatever the writers can think of. The same has happened with Jean Grey. If the movies are anything like the comics, she will return. edit: On second thought, after doing some reading about the movies on Wikipedia, forget it. Instead of staying true to the original stories, the damn studio executives have decided that they are better story writers, so they run the show now. According to them, the comic book X-men stories are too complex and dark for a general audience, so they changed everything. They also made Shadowcat much older than in the comics and made Bolivar Trask Black. Smh. Just more reasons for me to never watch those movies.

I love this movie so much! Easily my favourite Sommer's movie, although The Mummy is probably the best. I revisited this two (+Returns) a while ago, and IMO they have aged wonderfully. Can't say the same of The Mummy Returns, which I loved when it came out . I read a while ago that Harrison Ford was going to be the protagonist, but negotiations did not work out, and that led to a huge reduction in budget. I don't know wether that is true or not, but I can see lots of Ford's 80s acting in Treat Williams character.

One of the best B-Movies ever made. I wouldn't put it on par with more sophisticated films that want to carry a message, like of course the venerable Godzilla 1954 and its worthy successor Shin Godzilla, but in terms of horror and suspense you simply cannot do better than Deep Rising. It was overlooked simply because the pompous professional reviewer class of the time wanted to dismiss any science fiction or horror film as trash, so they called many of them 'Alien clones', simply because they usually have closed circle settings and a 'And Then There Were None' formula of killing off the cast. But despite both of those elements having their roots in classic detective and murder fiction, you'll never hear murder mystery films dismissed as 'And Then There Were None' clones like horror movies are called 'Alien clones'. It was an orchestrated deliberate attempt to kill off the 80's horror renaissance, and it worked.

Really enjoyed this film on DVD when it came out - and think your format for reviewing films is great. Looking forward to your feature length documentaries.

A video game more or less copied the movie in Call of Duty Ghosts. One of the extinction map packs had a mission called Mayday where a giant Kracken takes over a cargo ship. It is in the extinction game mode where the players enter the ship through a speed boat, and have to fight off the monsters through various sections of the ship. About 4 sections of the ship you fight through, and have giant tentacles to fight off at different times with other creatures attacking. Very team oriented and great co-op play. The 360 game is backward comp. with the xbox one.

This movie was later released in Telugu In India in year 2000. I was peteified with sound effects of gaint octopus crushing the cruise ship like a Pepsi can. The terror of not showing the size of the creature is what makes it even more horror just like in movie anaconda

When you're *on* a cruise ship you have a hard time knowing how everything is connected... There would be five minutes of downtime between each scene of them just walking down halls or up and down steps...

Watched this the other night as part of a month long horror/creature stream for October. Was pleasantly surprised by it, it plays out like a prototype of The Mummy, and no wonder.
