What disturbs me about the monster from this movie is how it makes its victims suffer. Its tentacles don't just eat you, but they keep you alive while draining and digesting you. So you feel everything while its happening. It doesn't give you the sweet release of death the moment your in its body, it makes you suffer through great pain before you eventually die from either the pain or digestion.

One of my favorite little character moments from any film is when Finnegan and Trillian get a couple seconds to catch their breath, and the escape boat gets brought up. She essentially tells him “You get me to your boat, and you can have whatever you want,” and he just responds “Can you get me a cold beer?” And there’s a moment of relief between both of them, because he’s both a great guy and probably figures that she has to put up with that attitude from others all the time.

I always through Pitch Black in the same realm...before it became a Vin Diesel sci-fi/action franchise...the first film stands as an excellent one-off sci-fi horror that needed no sequel. Deep Rising, Deep Blue Sea, and Pitch Black are old fashioned sci-fi horror "creature feature" movies. The only film in very recent years that SORT of felt like they were going for similar vibes is maybe something like Underwater. It isn't as good and 'pure' as some of these late 90s/early 00s films....but recently it felt like the one movie aiming in that direction.

The look of the monster is pretty good, definitely inspired by Lovecraft and yeah the CGI doesn't hold up in few scenes but it's a fast-paced movie with likeable characters, some fun moments towards the end and legendary quotes like "Chick with the muscles". Stephen Sommers knows how to make a popcorn movie like the Mummy, so enjoy the ride while Jerry Goldsmith's soundtrack is playing throughout the movie. Just have fun, don't take it too seriously. “Who is Treat Williams?” You’re in luck, Ryan. I’m going to tell you how to make your very own Treat Williams, at home. You’ll need your typical DNA extractor/compiler and E-Z Bake foetus oven, of course. Start with a base of Nathan Fillion and gently fold in two cups of Alan Tudyk. Then lightly sprinkle in some Bruce Campbell and whisk until fluffy and sardonic. It’s okay to add a little more Nathan Fillion, if you feel the mixture would be too easily fazed by something shocking. Then, if desired, season with a little ‘80s Kurt Russell and put in the oven for 9 months. Once removed from the oven, begin raising immediately on exclusive diet of under appreciated mixed-tone horror movies. Et voila, your very own Treat Williams.

Crazy monster(s) start picking the characters off one by one. One of the characters betrays the rest. Surviving character(s) face off against Big Boss, end up causing massive property damage and barely escape. Movie ends with some kind of stinger/jump scare. I just described the story structure of four movies (Dead Rising, Virus, Event Horizon, Ghost Ship) and two video games (Cold Fear and Dead Space). Note that I love all four of those movies and both games, it’s just remarkable how their story structures are damn near identical.

I like putting on old Vincent Price movies in the background. The Raven is actually amusing because he's cast as a good guy instead of his usual villainous character and there is a baby faced Jack Nickleson dressed like Robin Hood.

The Raven is one of the best Vincent Price horror comedies, along with Comedy of Terrors.

Awesome that you covered this movie. I feel exactly the same about it as you, I grew up with it and enjoy throwing it on every once in a while.

I mistakenly rented _Mercury Rising_ while looking for this movie at an old Hollywood video when I was a lad. Never knew til years later that I *hadn't actually seen it* so all those recommendations I made to friends ended up being a bit confusing when they actually got around to watching...well this, instead of a Bruce Willis movie.

The Haunting of Hill House is not a movie but it is something I keep coming back to as a 'feel good horror'. Creepy, spine-tingling, and mysterious, the House is shown to be something like a force of nature, a spiritual whirlpool that is so difficult to escape. And yet the characters at the end reunite as a family, having come to terms with the mental scars from losing a mother, a father, a sister, and very nearly a brother as well. The House's power is never explained but it doesn't have to; the family ensures that the House will starve and never claim another victim, neutralizing it effectively.

I was 12 when I first watched this movie, and it pretty much cemented my love for sea monster films. I know it's pretty cheesy by todays standards but it is some damn good cheese.

I recommended this for review back on the Snakes on a Plane video (I think). So good to see it brought back into the light and that so many people have the same fond memories of it that I do. Cheers!

The saddest part of this movie is that it didn’t turn Treat Williams into the next Kurt Russell/Bruce Willis like he should’ve been. Instead he became the generic father figure in movies like The Second Act with Jlo 🤦♂️

Only ever remembered this film for the tentacle in the toilet scene. Thank you for filling in the blanks for, well the whole rest of the movie!

On top of the whole fear of the ocean/unknown thing, it also played to what I call the Sarlacc phobia. That is, when the creature eats you, you don't immediately die. It's jaws don't crush your skull or snap you in half. Instead, you keep living for some amount of time as it slowly dissolves you. Like when that dude fell out of the tentacle and he was half digested and in agonizing pain... but he was still alive and conscious enough to feel it. Trapped in oppressive darkness, immobile, body constantly being almost crushed, an unbearable stench, and feeling every inch of your body being slowly melted off your body.

Omg I wish you said "If you love The Mummy, then you will love this" at the beginning of the video. I would've immediately hopped off to watch this movie to avoid any spoilers. Oh well, I'm watching it now. I LOVE the 1999 Mummy so I'm excited for Deep Rising!

I was in Ireland this week when I had heard that Treat Williams passed away and I immediately thought of your video. I hope you got to have another rewatch in his honor. I plan to as soon as I get home.

Predator has always been one of my favorite movies that balances genuine terror and danger with ridiculously fun action scenes and likeable characters. For a non horror movie with a similar tone, Die Hard is a great blend of taut suspense that’s not forced and moments of levity along with 80s action that accounts for all the escapism you could need

I just watched this movie after hearing the opening of this video, and I'm glad I did, but it didn't do much for me personally. Kevin O'Connor was my favorite part hands down, and he made the film for me. Everything indeed came up Joey, and boy was I shocked and thrilled. I've got to disagree with on you on the lead guy, though; he left me very cold. He kind of resembles a number of other actors, and I kept wishing he was played by any one of them instead. (Spoilers?) Honestly though the whole film is a must watch just for the part where the lead mercenary realizes he wasted his ammo being a jerk to Joey. That was downright euphoric. Like wow. Thanks for covering this. It was a fun watch, regardless of my gripes. (It's also cool seeing the similarities between this and The Mummy--which is one of my 'feel good' horrors alongside The Thing, Thirteen Ghosts, Sleepy Hollow, Cube, and a few others.)

In my generation, Treat Williams was mostly known and loved for his role as George Berger in the 1979 (Oh, my goodness) movie version of the musical "Hair". Kind of iconic then! Watch it!

my favorite feel good horror is probably night of the creeps!! it's got enough character drama and harrowing scares that the humor doesn't feel like the main feature, unlike other horror comedies where i have to be in the right mood to watch them.
