Not my preferred genre usually, as I'm more of a *supernatural* horror fan, but in terms of "creepy crawly horror," the scarabs from The Mummy (1999) *still* do so much with so little screen time for me. 👏 *Ritual Recommends* As Above, So Below (2014) Mr. Jones (2013) Underworld series (2003-2017) Soulmate (2013) Spike (2008)

As an arachnologist I love this movie because, while it inevitably gets so much stuff wrong, it also gets a lot of things right. The animators clearly did their homework when it came to bringing the spiders to life. The only inaccuracy that really gets my goat is towards the end when the tarantula pierces the door of the mall with its pedipalps/legs. Pedipalps (basically mini-legs or arms that have sensory functions and play a role in spider mating) are blunt on the ends, and while it is true that spiders have claws, these are sharply curved, relatively tiny things used for climbing or manipulating webbing. Tarantula fangs, however, are absolutely ginormous by spider standards and capable of doing mechanical damage to some fairly sturdy things (like boots). Having the tarantula bite through the door instead of using its legs would have been such an easy fix.

This film was actually the one that got me fascinated about spiders, ironically, displaying all the different spider powers like they're superheroes of the animal world. The jumping spider was definitely my favorite from the film, not just because it had the coolest ability, but it also had the coolest name: Habronattus Orbus.

Remembering my very few spider lectures back at university, I believe to remember that spiders can’t get bigger for two reasons: They get too heavy to really support themselves, and their way of breathing is not efficient enough. It was always a good reason not to be afraid of monster spiders. Love the little ones though, eating mosquitoes and stuff.

For the time, the CGI isn't bad. And I get the feeling the animators were prioritizing detailed animation over rendering realism, which isn't a bad call when the spiders are basically characters in the movie. A well-animated spider can still get a laugh, even if it looks a little fake.

Well, I'm embarrassed to admit Eight Legged Freaks was that movie for me. This and Tetsuo: The Iron Man, which in fairness is actually disgusting and horrifying even to non-children. Low-key my first introduction to Silent Hill (2006), but not quite. I was about seven years old. I was going to see a movie with a friend, don't remember what it was, but I *do* remember the theater's giant banner for Silent Hill, asking my mom why the girl I now know as Alessa didn't have a mouth, and her saying that it looked way too scary for me. Even so, it was an image that stuck in my memory, so much so that I was able to recognize it when I discovered the DVD among my mom's collection some years later. 😉⚫

@@QuintessentialWalrus I remember my family always used to take me to video rental shop at the weekend where I would just oggle at all the astonishingly threatening horror film covers, having no idea what could be inside them that people would want to watch if that was what the pictures promised. I vividly remember The Hills Have Eyes 2 being one that particularly stuck with me for its image of the terrified woman clawing at the ground whilst being dragged (in chains, a google search now shows me, though at the time I thought it was bloodied guts) by some mysterious figure. Also shout out to Land of the Dead for that horrendously unsettling greenish-yellow image of face after face after face of neverending flesheaters all staring calmly out at the viewer like their next meal. Honestly the films were really pretty tame in comparison with what those images threatened...

I recently discovered that, rationally, I know the tiny, skinny spiders that exist in my country shouldn't scare me - but they do disgust me when they walk and my monkey brain screams danger. Like, I know it's just a little spider, I don't like looking at it, but I'm chill when it's in the corner of my room - mind you, we have like no actually DANGEROUS spiders here, so it's easy mode anyway. But like, I see a spoder move anywhere close to me and I abandon all reason.

Thing is though small spiders with thin legs and fast movement tend to be the lethal ones both because of their bite and the fact that they hide everywhere. Most large, buff spiders have a painful bite but not much else, are slow, and stay out of your way. There are exceptions of course but it makes sense that a black widow causes more heeby jeebies than a tarantula or a jumping spider (jumping spiders are fuckin’ cute).

I never took it as LITERALLY having Lee Harvey Oswalds gun but rather just a gun of the same model - a Carcano which was a ww1-ww2 era Italian army rifle. The fact the police have to resort to using a bolt action rifle thats potentially a hundred years old only demonstrates how run down and poor the town is. Them specifically using the same rifle as Oswald and referring it to as such though is definitely a little comedic nod to the conspiracy bit though, especially since there are other even cheaper alternatives than a carcano like a Mosin (which at the time would've been selling for like 80-110$).

God I love this movie, it was my favorite in Preschool. I used to get my classmates, who'd never seen the movie, to reenact scenes with me using plastic bananas as guns, (Which I got a time-out for). It sparked my fascination with spiders, and would read book after book on them when grandma would take me to the library. By kindergarten I could spell cephalothorax and identify any spider I came across. My teacher actually complained to my parents that I was reading "too much" non-fiction books. I was a weird kid. Now I'm a joyless adult stuck in manual labor and drinking too much. It's funny how life works out.. But this movie is ridiculously nostalgic for me and it takes me back to a simpler time.

This was one of the first horror films I ever saw! I remember watching the vhs on my TV with my parents sat on either side of me. I was too young to watch it at the time so they were probably there to comfort me in case I got too scared ahaha. I bloody loved this film even with my fear of spiders, it’s just so over the top yet terrifying to think of it actually happening. I’ll always remember this movie for better or worse,,

Considering your spider movie timeline video was the very one that brought me to the channel, I've been quietly excited for *this* one for a while. Eight Legged Freaks was one of the earlier horror movies I fell in love with as a kid. I loved bugs and creepy crawlers growing up, but this movie legitimately sparked some fear for them in me, but at the same time the comedy was a weirdly effective introduction to horror and camp horror--both of which I love to this day.

So one thing about this movie that always bothered me was the Mall attack. The survivors barricade the doors and ready for an attack but are quickly overrun. Thing I always didn't get is why they didn't coat the walls and entrance with flameable substances like gas or Alcohol, stuff a mall would likely have in adubance, and just burn the spiders once they start crawling in.

I love this film so much ever since my uncle gave me the VHS (alongside clerks) at 7 years old being like 'this spider swings down a vine like Tarzan, it's incredible!' There was a short film by the same director on the DVD that inspired it too - a black and white, 50s-schlock giant spider movie with the same plot but just one spider vs. one woman - I used to think it was ancient! Love me some giant spider movies. We're sorely lacking a definitive one for this decade thus far. The closest we've had is 'itsy bitsy' and whilst that's got some nice effects work it's sadly lacking in the fun department

eight legged freaks is the only monsters movie that I still vividly remember and love, for some reason. The silliness of it with the nibbler voiceovers on some spiders, as well as just random moments like that punching spider (still gave me a chuckle here) are so good.

I always interpreted the addition of townies into the main cast later in the film as being symbolic of how a story that effects a town can only be told by realizing these people are people too. The movie itself has so many interesting themes it touches on.

I love Eight Legged Freaks because this movie has such a weird blend of comedic violence / horrific violence. Because the sound effect of the spider "eating" someone during the rush to the mall but instead it's the sound of cartoon boxing beating the man on the floor will stay with me until I die. Yet we also have the tense scene of some poor schmuck approaching a spider den and getting dragged inside only to meet a fate worse than death. But again we also have the kick ass scene of dirt bike dudes escaping jumping spiders while kicking them mid air. I love this kind of bizarre blend of serious yet goofy. We don't get many of these so I like to cherish them when found.

Omg, finally, someone else who has arachnophobia because of this movie! When I was a kid, my Grandpa would get my Nana to rent him horror movies from Blockbuster and sometimes he would let me watch them with him because he had no clue about what was too extreme for a kid, he just enjoyed horror movies and wanted me to enjoy them with him. So one weekend when my Nana had gone with my Aunt grocery shopping, he decided we were going to watch Eight Legged Freaks together because "it was silly and funny, not too scary". Except the film was too scary for me. My Nana came home during the scene with the trapdoor spiders to find me hiding under a blanket on the couch and she got so mad at my Grandpa. Eventually I hit an age where I fell in love with horror movies and he and I started to watch them together, but never spider movies. To this day, those are still too much for me.

I put this in the category of 90s/early 2000s nostalgia horror movies. That are mimicking horror movies of the '50s and '60s but are distinctly of their time. Starship troopers, tremors, Mars attacks, this, and evolution. I have a soft spot for them because they are kind of a forgotten genre. They are (to varying levels) feel like they were made because had a weird passion to make them in the spur of the moment. I like them because they're not refined, so in many ways they achieved the result of wanting to be like One of those Ed Wood style movies.
