Love this version like forever. The way Mr Emanuel swings his version is like no other. When I met Doc Watson in 1978. Doc & Merle Watson (on Bass) were playing this song in a wonderful wooden chapel in DeLand Florida. The acoustics were dynamic. I was 27 & had only been playing guitar for 10 years. I was blessed to spend some time with him. What an amazing man. Truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. It was like he could look right into my inner being & knew who I was. I gained great insight into finger style guitar thru this encounter. He stayed with the events coordinator next door to where I lived. Merle had gone to bed, but Doc sat out on the screened in porch & continued to play. I fell asleep on my porch listening to that wonderful sound of his picking style. To hear his music , meet him & spend time in his presence was an uplifting spiritual experience. Thank you Mr. Emanuel for your dedication & such a fine version of this song. Vince James Ajello

Yes , I am familiar with the original composers of "deep River Blues. What I should have said was it was one of Tommy Emanuel's greatest interprets of the many songs he has arranged. Tks for pointing that out. I know Doc Watson's version is very well known. I got to meet Doc years ago & he played it live. Also, one of the greatest guitarists of our time.

there were 2 friends of mine doc and eric they were in a bluegrass band two weeks notice they decided that they would have a concert at kern county fairgrounds they had doc ,hot rize and newrass revival as well as some others and i sat on stage for doc watson he was really on that day . got to talk with him and he was so friendly i just couldnt get over sitting with my hero thanks to john and eric you two dont know how much joy you brought me so thank you (: (:

Listen to some Justin Johnson also. Maybe try your hand at a 3 string cigar box guitar. Justin says a 3 string will make you think about your playing in a different way and will improve your 6 string playing.

I have to recommend studying all Mississippi John Hurt's tunes. In particular, Candyman, Avalon, Monday Morning Blues, Make Me A Pallet and watch how he plays Spike Driver Blues on the Pete Seeger Show, available here in YT. MJH's thumb is so solid. You mimic that and you will learn. I love this DRB version, some sweet notes I've been leaving out. Good Luck

This arrangement is as great as Doc Watson"s released in 1960s. I have never impressed another versions of this song. Tommy"s version is only one exception becasuse it is so musically excellent and beautiful.
