From Soldotna, 2+ hrs to Seward on the highway, then 2+ hours from the harbor to the fishing grounds. Reeling fish in for 2 hours, then head back home! It is a serious commitment but it's not an everyday thing. And the memories last a lifetime, totally worth it.

Just going thru videos. Super trip Ryan. I just finished our new boat last summer and launched in August. Plan on doing a end round from Homer to Seward. Nuka is definitely a most area. Keep having fun and be safe.

Oh there’s nothing like the power of a fat halibut. They can cause serious damage if not detained properly and with us being hours from any help or rescue there’s no sense in taking any chances. Letting them bleed out while thrashing around on a harpoon line is best practice imo. You gotta give it a shot!

That’s a GlacierCraft Coho. 27 ft long 10ft wide, has a reverse chine hull. I wouldn’t take anything less that far out into the gulf.

Nice video, awesome job with the Lingcod. However I've been fishing halibut for over 50 years commercially and sport from Kodiak to Dixon Entrance. I've seen hundreds of thousands of pounds of halibut caught, many way over 100 lbs. The one thing I have never seen in my life was a Halibut that needed to be shot with a gun. Really big Halibut are more docile than smaller Halibut.

We grew up shooting the big ones. I’ve seen first hand what kind of damage a big fish can do on the deck to people and property. Not always are they violent but I take no chances. Sometimes bleeding them out on a harpoon in the water is a good option as well without a gun. Many ways to land a fish.

Great show! I'm down here in Oregon or Washington and you are right about those Ling Cod. They are pretty nice. Our women catch that size all the time. Of course, us guys throw those back and don't keep anything unless you can put a medicine ball in its mouth. Y'all should come down and catch a real ling on my Uniflite Salty Dog. Of course if you want to do halibut will need a bigger boat.

Yes, they are LARGE! This is a good example of what the ocean can produce when it’s left untouched. The weather and location keep this spot inaccessible to must people nearly all of the time. And once in a blue moon the clouds part, the wind stops and she allows you to fish her for a tide, and it’s glorious!

Watch the weather forecasts and make sure there’s plenty of fuel available for long trips out in the Gulf of Alaska. Keep in mind that you are a guest out on the ocean and give it the utmost respect. It sounds extreme but the ocean is unforgiving and offers little room for error. The currents are really strong and the water is always frigid cold, even on a warm day. The adventure makes it worth it though and the fishing is unforgettable! 🐟

Wow! That's a big boy's fishing trip you did. Amazing. I'm in extreme northern CA. I caught a 30# King Salmon and a 30# Lingcod on the same trip, but that was 15 years ago. Really enjoy your videos! Keep it up!

We usually get all of our gear in Soldotna because it’s cheaper and that’s where we live. Ken’s tackle, sportsman’s warehouse, trustworthy hardware, Fred meyer and Walmart carry a stock that can picked through.. if your in Seward go to the tackle store at the north launch that I’m next to in the beginning of the video! Set that hook!

Southern Calif is all but fished out except for an occasional run of Blue fin and Dorado this last few month rock fish is all but eliminated . In high school I pulled a pacific halibut off Santa Barbara island 35 lbs. Considering it was 30 years ago was a great catch for a 17 year old kid. Would love to get into a barn door up there.

Those 35 lbers can really pull though! I guess there’s a trade off though when it comes to weather. We’re usually a chilly rain and can get some serious winds. I like the idea of fishing off of Cali in a pair of shorts and flip flops! I caught a couple hundred pound stripped marlin down there this time of year a few years back that was unbelievable.. 🐟I typically see a handful of halibut around 100lbs every season up this way. But like everywhere else, they’re further and further away each year…

We’re fishing the North Gulf Coast regs from the ADFG. In this area, lingcod season opens July 1 and you can keep one per day, over 35 inches. Anything smaller than 35 inches must be released. Lingcod are state regulated.

Where can I fish for Halibut near Soldotna or Kenai?

You can cast of the south Kenai beach and catch halibut if you are patient. But your best bet is to drive South about an hour and get on a boat headed out of Deep Creek. That would be the best bottom fishing option near Soldotna.

Charters have the gear you need if you are trying to boat fish, like a heavy duty jigging pole and double action reel. If youre trying to cast from shore on your own then you will need a 15' casting pole with a big spinning reel. 60lb test mono is all you really need but some people like heavier braid. The halibut aren't far off the beach this time of year. Kayaks tend to be successful fishing an hour before and after high tide.

What you're suggesting is actually quite dangerous. Big fish like these need to be detained otherwise you risk injury or property damage. I feel like knocking the fish unconscious is a more humane way to harvest a catch than to just let it flop around for hours in the fish hold anyways, nothing peaceful about that.

You had to go 60 miles from homer to connect with good fish. that is because people have harvested too many of the bigger breeder fish around homer and essentially fished it out. consider releasing the bigger halibut so they can reproduce. 20 to 30 pounders are best eating.

Good point. Many many years of big fish tourney (Homer Halibut Jackpot) fishing can have this effect. Of course I'm fishing where the commercial long liners are allowed to soak 2000 hooks at a time! My one hook in the entire Pacific ocean 5 times a year most likely isn't the culprit for stock depletion. Your point is valid however and I encourage catch and release when warranted as well. The King Salmon that run into the Cook Inlet are facing the same fate with the advanced commercialization of the industry.

Funny how in the past few times I have been in Alaska and fished out of Seward and our service wouldn't even let us go after lingcod. I know where you are and have fished that area in the past and have gotten some real nice lingcod. My biggest went over 60 pounds and I have a few over 50.

@@alaskasmallcraftadventures No just lazy crews who do not listen to clients. I got a bad taste in my mouth last year from a lodge I used to use and will never use them again. The past four times I have been up there I have only gotten one big ling, yet when I request the captains to target them they give some lame excuse. Most of my party has never done battle with one and I always wanted them to get a feel of it. After a short discussion with a captain out of Homer about getting some lings, he said it would be a 70 mile trip. Instead he kept us close in and in two drops I pulled up two near keepers, 34 inchers. If he would have just dropped a few feet deeper on the pinnacle I am sure we could have gotten everyone onboard one.

Sometimes just catching fish of any size is all anyone really needs! Ive been out on the water many times and come home empty so a 25-50lber could be a days trophy here as well! The wind, waves and weather gatekeep Nuka all on their own. It only opens up for fishing a couple times a year and a lot of the time you only get an hour of fishing out there before something changes pushing you back towards the harbor. People are funny though 🙃

Great catch there Ryan. I was fishing up in Sitka at the beginning of the month but didn't do as well as you guys. Caught quite a few fish but lots of them had to be released. Fun time anyhow. Good luck on your future trips.

Ahh thanks! I appreciate you taking the time to comment. We typically are releasing dozens more than we catch as well! This trip was certainly an exceptional one however. The weather in that part of the gulf only allows for a handful of trips per year so it was a blessing to even get out there! And I cannot wait to go back! 🐟

😀 yea you got that right! The weather and distance keeps Nuka just out of reach for most of the year. And on top of that the rocks aren’t ideal for halibut fishing so you have to work your tail off all day! I’ll burn 100 gallons of gasoline on a 180 mile round trip from the Seward harbor. I’ve only been a couple of times since the new administration took over.

I'm coming next summer come hell or high water. Hope to see 👀 you next summer killing it. I do tons of deep sea out of Virginia Beach and organ inlet. In a 20 foot sea pro with a 150 Yamaha 2 stroke. Smallest boat out there I go with all my commercial fishing buddies so we normally slay it . Caught a 450 pound blue fin last winter . It was almost as big as the boat. My dream trip is Alaska. Also pretty work in the meat 🍖

Come down in either the end of December or January. The permit to fish recreational is only 20 bucks for the tuna and I have a blanket license on the boat . Hopefully by the end of summer I sell both my boats and get a bigger one .

I know right!!! That’s what happens when you let a newbie practice gaffing and the cheek gets torn and then it becomes a film prop. Trust me, we don’t make a habit out of putting holes in the good stuff. There’s nothing like hot buttery blackened ‘but cheeks during a cold wintery day!

hard part is getting ahold of that 410 ammo but if you get the 357 adapter you can use those.

Yea, that’s no joke. We have the 410 snake charmer on board and it sits hungry most of the time due to the scarcity of shells. The revolver we used in this vid shot a .38 cal and did surprisingly well but isn’t mine. I’m usually shooting with my .22 pistol for the sake of my ears but the salt is taking it’s toll on it.

Nice! I was hoping I could get a response from someone who knows what's happening a little further South, but still in the Pacific where the Lingcod range. All of these lingcod were down about 110ft or so.. They like the underwater cliffs so the depths can vary a little, but nothing over 150ft down. Thanks for commenting and adding to the channel!

Yes it’s nice not having to battle sharks every time bait hits the water. Occasionally a blue shark or a salmon shark can get in the mix but it’s on the rare side of things, like less than once a year for us.
