I always have to shout out Missy Elliott when it comes to alternative Black women! Her aesthetic was different even for hip hop (an alt style in itself) and she made me realize before anything else that it was cool (supa dupa fly even) to be weird and different and look at things in that same way.

Man, I was born in the wrong era because I got tormented for being Alternative and listening to punk-metal-goth-Nuwave-etc back in the late 80s. I had a purple mohawk, and dressed in shreds with pins, spikes and chains, cute Band-Aids and paperclips as accessories... etc!

Finding out alot of alternative culture is from black culture was an amazing realization. It makes alot of sense that white ppl who are trying to be different from their peers would adopt culture from Black people who's whole culture has been . One thing I found interesting was finding out how much of the horror genre was also influenced by black culture especially during the early 1900's.
@taylorcassidyj2 ай бұрын
While not all concepts and versions of alternative culture/fashion stem from Black culture the fashions that come from Rock music do! It was cool for me to find out as well. The best thing about alternative fashion is that the influences come from all over the world. But it’s always very grounding for me to find out how Black people fit into it. Also interesting, I’ll be researching that more thank you for sharing!!

In the late1960's through the 70's blacks could freely dress however they liked in the black circles then came the 1980's and everyone had to dress the same. Now, it's back to dressing however you feel and its okay for the most part with the usual criticism that all young people face.

I love exploring different fashion styles but love music too. So this video was right up my alley of interests. Gosh the amount of being told “you’re talking/acting yt” or why you dress that way goes so deep. But being able to come out the other side of people who think im not black enough or whatever nonsense is what made me stronger in myself. Im happy to see more POC, specially black people, in alt fashion and music. I want this area to keep growing and many relearning the roots of what builds alt fashion and music.

so happy that MMATA is getting the attention that it deserves! My lil Situationship told me about them way back in like late 2020 and I had told him I would listen to them and I didn’t then a few days later he asked me again and then I looked them up real quick on Spotify and just played a few random songs then I fell in love with them ever since. You can definitely hear their sound improving from their first album to the current! Edit Definitely inspired me to get my colored braids way back in 2021/2022 😂 (that era of my life right now is over cause I can’t have crazy colored hair at work.) 😢 but thank you for bringing Edit on I love her!

I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this video. The information, the skits, the interviews, the editing, this whole video just bursts with talent and creativity. As an Indian person, I've never felt comfortable fully throwing myself into the heavy metal subculture because it felt like it wasn't created for me, even though I love the music, the bands, the fashion, etc. So much of what you said, specifically about people accusing you of "trying too hard to be wh*te", I've experienced firsthand from other Indians.

I'm mixed but some people surprisingly see me as fully black(even tho my complexion light and hair looser) I've always loved alt styles and leaned a bit Into gothic and rock stuff. For me growing into it it didn't help that some of my family saw it as me just being a generic white girl and associating my love for the whole style with non blackness. At the time I didn't see a lot of black faces in the media I consumed but as I got older I saw more and more that I never realized were there, they made me love being black and having an interests like that. It made me insecure to be seen as less and less black for having. To me growing up I saw the generic black girl style(box braids or sew ins, tee shirt and shorts with lipgloss) this style bored me thinking is that it? But I loved the way these people looked and how they expressed themselves in hundreds of thousands of ways Nowadays I've just been wearing what I want but I'll never strive away from the eyeliner and black lipstick even my hair is different now if you can imagine this I usually wear it in a poof with my sides cut around my ear, I cut myself bangs, and have two braids one on each side that shapes the bang, I love it and that's all I care about

It is also sucks when you're around parents that repress your ability to Express yourselves authentically, because I know growing Up my dad was and is very "psuedo" religious and also very repressive of anything female periodt. with me being alternative and not being able to Express It growing Up in his household was extremely irritating, agitating, and annoying...... but the moment I got the fuck away from him I started being able to actually authentically Express myself with my esthetic, my music, and just who I was.... everyone stating i was brand new. no I'm just actually able to finally be who I am cause I was no longer living with the repressive ass parent.
