Years ago I worked at a physical rehab hospital. A little 8 year old girl that had been in a bad car accident had long hair and after a month in the hospital it was one big rat's nest on the back of her head. Her aunt spent about 6 hours and a couple of bottles of detangling spray to get it out and her niece immediately started to engage in therapy better and just overall improved. All of the staff gave the aunt compliments and some of us chipped in for her to have a spa day.

Some people can't get comfort from their family...so they depend on us as collective to at least not be hateful. Little kindness can indeed save lives. I remember all she had in last months was sharing stuff online, bacause she couldn't get outside...negative energy is hard on anyone...but can you imagine what it does to someone already on the edge. I'm white, I don't know what kind of curls mine are, but I don't brush them dry ever. I just spray them with water and plump them up. They start to lock on day 4-7 of not washing. Normally I wash my hair more often, but I've been having tons of health issues and I don't always have the strength. It hasn't been cut in 2 years, I'm a single moms and never want to spend the money on myself. I've never had my hair lock itself before....sometimes it's tempting to just let it do it, but at this length it would be too heavy for me I think.

@@mombythec girl, as a person who has had dreads twice, AND i'm a hairstylist, i wouldn't recommend it. people think dreads are going to be easy and not take any work, but it's actually the opposite. if you want your dreads to look nice, and not grow anything funky inside of them, (i knooow, rite?) they actually need LOTS of attention. also yes, they will be heavy asf. im sorry to hear about your health stuff..i have fibromyalgia and lots of issues with my hips and legs due to a genetic thing and being on my feet all day for many years doing hair. I have one with like, showering, getting dressed, having breakfast, brushing my teeth and doing my hair, that stuff along with like going outside and reading a book. And at the end of the week, or however long you choose, get youself a reward, like a nice dinner from your favorite restaurant, or whatever you want to reward yourself for doing good. This video broke my heart and then mended it. I'm a white-ass man with fine, thinning hair - but I know what it's like to stop taking care of yourself due to depression and trauma. It becomes very difficult to treat yourself well when it feels like the world doesn't - day in and out, you're receiving negative reinforcement that you don't deserve nice things. The really inspiring thing about this story is that she actually approached you for help. It is so, so courageous to ask for help sometimes - everybody needs it, but speaking up is damn hard. Really glad you were able to make this happen for her and I hope she's doing well today.

Get depressed, let yourself go, get depressed because you've let yourself go, want it fixed but are too upset to fix it/don't think it can be fixed, put it off, and the cycle repeats and repeats. So happy for her now and that she can walk around confidently strutting her stuff again!

Last year was the las time I went to a beauty salon. I lost her due to stress and my hair was short and thin. I went for a treatment and the girl was almost making fun of me. She was not interested in making me feel comfortable. She was talking to the other girls in the salon and not putting any effort on what she was doing. All the clients waiting were looking at me on a very contemptuous way. I just wanted to leave that place soon. She did a bad job drying my hair then I said to my mom I would never go to a hair salon again. I would like to be able to go to your salon. This same thing happen to my family members, when she was a baby girl. Probably 3 years old, her mom struggled with mental illness and caring for her became overwhelming. One day she came over and i saw the state of her hair. We sat down with snacks, Disney movies, juice boxes, and love. I combed every single loc out and, washed and braided her hair into a beautiful little girl style with beads. It was like she was an all new baby. So happy, confident, and proud of herself. This sort of tender love and care really changes lives!

My mistake was Using Garnier Fructis in the green bottle. (I usually use natural products ) At first it worked well. One day I got in the shower and it was breaking badly. I got scared to comb it so I put it in a bun and left it up too long. Then it turned into a tangled mess. I have been working with it since my post, but now my hair feels like straw so I I'm just going to cut it off.

My ex boyfriends mom had a sew in that was in her head for like 9 mos. I noticed her hair when I first met her and then 8 mos later it was the same way and I was wondering why. I went to cosmetology school, however, at that time I was working with the elderly and disabled in the health care industry so I noticed her behaviors were strange. I kept telling him his mom has Alzheimer’s and her behavior is abnormal and used her hair as an example. I explained the dangers of having her hair in that style because of mold and bacteria. I finally convinced him to ask his father if I could do her hair and he let me. When I took the sew in out due to how long it had been in her hair, the entire crown of her head was skin bald when I removed the tracks. It took me two full days to take out the tracks, net, braids, detangle, shampoo, condition, deep condition, trim the ends and do two plaits. Even though she wasn’t all the way there mentally, she felt so good afterwards and she thanked me. I gave her husband some hair oil and grease and told him to use that throughout her hair daily because she had a lot of scalp dandruff and psoriasis. That was about two years ago and she now has locs and they take her to the salon to get them done. The crown of her head did grow back. It is very important not to assume things about someone just because of their hair, often times there are things going on. Alzheimer’s and depression are great examples.

Just speaking from my own experience as someone who struggles with severe depression and struggle to even put in clothes some day, I so appreciate this hairdresser. My mum booked an appointment for me to get my hair curled for my 8th grade graduation. She left to go run some errands, and the women doing my hair kept commenting on how many knots I had and how split my ends were, saying how I needed all sort of things done and that I needed to stop damaging it. I was a confused 13 year old who had and still does have virgin hair, never dyed even though people think I did since its red. But she was just giving me bad vibes. she was really pulling at the back to brush it out, and I said "ow" out loud. I think she actually was offended that SHE yanked my hair too hard, cause all of the sudden she stopped yanking and started curling. I didnt think much of it, figured she got all of the knots out. She finished up, my mum came back and paid her. Went to my graduation, looked good, forgot about how rude the hairdresser was. About 3 days later I go to put my hair up in a bun I notice I have a whole chunk of my hair cut super short right at the base where the knots where. I freaked out, my mum freaked out and immediately called her, she denied it and said that I did it when I most certainly did not. Long story short we had a big dispute with that woman and she ended up giving us the money back at least, but it took 3 years for it to grow out to match the rest of my hair, could not put my hair up at all for the 1st year because it looked like a weird reverse mullet. But it genuinely makes me feel so happy for this woman to get this kind of help, and the hairdresser wouldn't even dream of cutting her hair out. Props to her for being awesome!

Amen to that, her hair turned out so beautifully! 😍 I wish I lived near her because I would definitely go to her salon and straight to her for my hair care. I do my own hair because people always cut it off instead of trimming it in the past. This has happened to me enough times in my life where I’ve lost trust in people, so I do my best at home but I feel like I just need a person like her and I would be in good hands. I’m now on anticoagulants and my hair is falling out tremendously (it’s rare but can happen) and locking up also fir some reason, and nothing is working for me that I’ve tried from conditioners to oil.

@Julian Greene your so right, I've have had anxiety since childhood along with probably depression though never thought I was, anyway I've had a few therapists and one she was wonderful and one thing she'd say was, well I think your doing okay (never feeling I was progressing) you come in here and taking care of yourself, 'your nails are always looking good" ; ) now, over oh past few years, I'd put on polish and would look at the polish chipping off etc and I could feel how they looked tacky though I'd find myself not bothering to take care of them. These days in a bit of a rut, so I don't polish my nails. That's an improvement because as much as I love my nails with color, I know right now is not the right time. Oh, I never ever stop wearing my red lipstick, yup, even with the mask. (actually when we could take our masks off). I hope your doing well, and don't forget at least for me, sometimes I just have to take things in moments, a day at a time can feel overwhelming. ~ sending love, light and peace to you ~ ☮ 💖💖
