You can download most of the patches to try for yourself on the Deepmind (I lost some when playing around with the editor!)
www.dropbox.co...
Not sure where they're stored on a PC but in a Mac they're hidden here:
in Mac HD/Users/username/Library/PHAT12/banks
On Windows the editor saves the patches to C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\PHAT12\banks
Also I've added a couple of suggestions from the comments, such as Mr Fingers style bass.
There are some subs to help explain what I've done as a guide to doing similar yourself.
Hope someone finds it useful.... :)

LOVE your videos. I know it's a lot of work and largely thankless, but I hope you keep at it for a while. You have great ears and really know your gear, so for me it's always educational seeing your comparison vids. I don't think many of us would be able to match those sounds up as easily as you make it look.

Fun video. I couldn’t tell a significant difference between the two. The way i look at it, the DeepMind gives you way more modulation options, a killer arpeggiator and effects, plus the electronics are going to be a lot more stable than a 25 year old Juno 106 with dying chip problems.

If the Behringer synth parts are part of a busy mix, or Behringer is being played live, then, yes, for the patches show in Part 1 & Part 2 of this comparison, l there isn't a significant difference between the Juno 106 & the Behringer. However, I do wonder if the Behringer can be tweaked sufficiently to be 'close enough' with all of the Juno 106 presets & with most or all iconic patches that appeared in well-known songs. As for the dying voice chips; that is caused by a protective lacquer on each chip that broke down over time due to heat from the chip. The products of the breakdown (but not the original lacquer) are able to conduct electricity, so it was inevitable that the voice chips would short-out & fail. Also, until someone discovered that cause, replacement chips would also fail. Now, one can purchase voice chips without the lacquer, or (if the owner is brave enough) the lacquer can be dissolved using a specific solvent, then the voice chip re-installed. The bottom line is that the dying voice chip problem is no longer needs to be an issue. 🙂

Love it! If you aren't sick of the Juno and Deepmind yet, I think the factory presets of the Juno programmed on the Deepmind made by a person who has both synths would be really useful for the community of Deepmind owners.

Thanks for taking the effort to make this video, and the last one comparing DM12 and J106. Suuper high quality and I love that you don't get mired into the social media debate about behringer vs. roland vs. etc etc etc. Just great and so useful. I learned more with these videos about my DM12 than I have with a lot of others and reading materials. Cheers.

Unbitable chorus on 106. Imho more 'watery' spread thanks to a bit of phase shifting makes almost only major sounding difference. Also, dm could use a bit more of low mids. But for that price... it's perfect. Great demo!

Man, thank you so much for doing these comparison vids, yours are hands down the most comprehensive, detailed, and well-rounded. If I could make one request it'd be to spend a bit more time with the filters mostly or fully open, IME the most critical differences in the tone of vintage vs. remakes is in the buzz/air. Usually the older synths have more energy and/or a sweeter texture to the highest harmonics, giving them a more present, sparkling/crackling sound. This is 10x true if the remake is digital, like the Rolands.

Juno-106 has more bottom end - using the BOOST switch on the DM12 might help with this (although it seems to be on in some of these examples). But otherwise they are very close. Likely that you'd want to EQ some of the low-mid out of the mix anyway. And the extra 6 voices makes up for any small differences in the sound.

What did you get? I got a juno 106 and it was incredible to hear in person. I only had experience with soft synths before it and no matter what anyone says, no soft synth comes close to a real vintage analogue. It literally was the same as the difference between a piano and a software piano. I didn't compare it to a deepmind though and now that I want more versatility I'm back looking at the deepmind to see if it will really compare.

No chorus adjustment, just hit the button and BAM instant gratification! This allows me to get right down to playing the music I love. I am however looking forward to future Behringer synths.... Get the patch banks by AnalogAudio1 and Geosynths and you will have a deeper appreciation of what the DeepMind can do . . .
@AlainHubert
@AlainHubert 6 жыл бұрын
@@josephwright5921 I have bought the excellent patch set by GEOSynths for the DM12, and have enjoyed it. And I've also programmed patches myself. But the truth is that, this synth is a 12 voice Juno 106. A single DCO per voice synth. But if you want to have a two DCO per voice, you can by using the Unison-2 mode, which brings the whole machine down to a 6 voice synth. I already have a 6 voice synth, with 2 VCOs per voice, the amazing sounding DSI OB6. So I don't really need the DeepMind 12. So that's why it's in its box right now.

@AlainHubert
@AlainHubert 6 жыл бұрын
@@tonedeath8631 I also do that, but it's not always easy to come up with exactly what I'm looking for. It takes time and a lot of efforts. And sometimes others can have good ideas for patches that I wouldn't have had. Mostly I buy patch sets to replace factory presets which are almost always bad or unpolished. And I'd rather concentrate on making music, not program patches.

Brother, I really love your videos. And I have a high appreciation for the work that goes into creating such content. With that said, I hope my comment doesn't come across the wrong way :) I think these new retro-synths are amazing - all of them. I'm a child of the 70s and 80s - and fondly remember making music on some really cool vintage machines like the Korg DW 8000, the DX7, and drooling over an OB 8. And although it's fun to recreate those sounds for the sake of nostalgia - I say: why not use the new machines to just create something new. Sure comparing them sound for sound, register for register, etc. is an interesting exercise - but the real magic comes from creating something we haven't heard before :-) Not at all me putting down what you've done here. Just something that's been on my my for a long time :-) Keep on doin' what'cher doin'. Thanks a lot.

Thanks, no worries I know what you’re saying. I like making the little demo tracks with them to show what they can do - I really enjoy sitting for hours noodling away. But to be perfectly honest for KZbin people are more interested in how it sounds compared to...xx or how to use it. The quick demos get a lot of views as they show what the synths can do... if I uploaded just synth based tracks I’d have to be up there with the synth gods for anyone to bother watching!
@fincorrigan7139
@fincorrigan7139 4 жыл бұрын
@ S Jackson If you're interested in a comprehensive look at the DM12's other capabilities I would suggest having a look at a KZbin channel call GEOsynths by Jamie Morden. He's a professional patch creator (not that Starsky couldn't achieve the same results if he wanted to - he easily could, but this video is outside that scope) and the GEOsynth channel provides a broad spectrum of what this synth can do. It is very impressive. Hope you enjoy it.

It's crazy how you can tell the Juno just sounds better. I was doing something else with this video in the background, and each time a lush and beautiful sound made me be like "Uh, what's this?" It happened to be the Juno each time. It has more depth, grit, and warmth. Somehow the DeepMind sounds too "perfect" and digital, relies too much on digital effects imo. The Deepmind doesn't quite come close to the analog Chorus I in the Juno.

This is excellent Starsky Carr! Thanks for doing both Part 1 & Part 2 of the comparison between a real Juno 106 & a Behringer Deep Mind 12. A question for you Starsky Carr: Given what you know about the Deep Mind's architecture, as well as the design of Roland's classic vintage synths, would it be possible for the Deep Mind to get equally close to the sounds of Roland's other famous synths (e.g. in the Jupiter series, the JX series, and other Junos)? Thanks!
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 5 жыл бұрын
That’s a tough one. The JX8p would be closest - I think the filter is more similar - the JX3P filter is more like the 106. The Jupiter has x-mod which the alpha can’t touch, but generally they all have that Roland flavour.

DM12 was initially planned to be a Juno 106 recreation, but the developers went further and made it to be its own thing. I don't think DM12 fails in anything. It's a great synth and there are more expensive synths that can't touch it. So...

I'm really impressed by how nice the deepmind can sound. What are your thoughts on the rev 2 vs the deepmind? The rev 2 offers a hell of a lot more in terms of modulation and features but what about the sound? Do you ever find it's extremely necessary / useful to have 3 envelopes and 4 lfos or is it really overkill? Gives you a lot of potential but is it musically useful?
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 6 жыл бұрын
That’s a good question... I have used 4 LFOs on the but I could cope with less. Normally it was to add some slop on the P8. The increased slop on the Rev 2 sorts this out anyway. They’re good for evolving pads. I don’t think you can really compare the DM with the Rev2 because of the different oscillators . The rev 2 is more flexible there - and almost double the price for the 8 voice and another £500 on top of that for the 16 voice plus additional for the editor. Behringer probably realised they didn’t want to occupy the same space as the P8/Rev2 and Peak, so stayed with an enhanced 106 at extremely good value.

Some really great patches (really love the last few minutes) - Do you make music in this style? I don't know what you'd call it - synth wave? I Can you limit the DM12 to 6 voices? Seems like quite a nice effect on the Juno when it runs out of voices. Part of the reason I ask about modulation is i'm massively impressed spec wise with the moog one in theory. There seems like there's no other poly that can even start to come close to its modulation. Sound wise I haven't been particularly wowed by anything I've heard though - sounds good but not massively better than anything I've heard from synths before. I'm wondering if all of the modulations is really overkill. The closest in terms of mod capabilities for a poly synth is probably the Rev 2. I'm not sure if it's worth the money really but i've very temped by it. Seems like a synth you could create anything you could ever imagine on in theory. I haven't heard anything particularly new from it though so I don't know if that is just theoretical. Kind of like modular where people seem to mostly either make unmusical blips and bloops / noise or make something you could easily accomplish with a regular synth like a P6 or OB6. I have been wondering whether I should get an OB6 - love the sound but it seems really weak on modulation options.
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, but no it's not what I'd record... just noodling about here. You can limit the DM12 to 8 or 6 voices, along with the envelope curves means it's really flexible. Rev2 is amazingly flexible on modulation, much more so than the OB6. If modulation is your thing the P8, Rev2 or DM are good options. I'm more comfortable with the Rev2/P8 workflow tbh, they're more knobby which means more instant. A couple of years ago I made a video showing the P8 doing modular style drone with leaps etc. Sounds very much like the blips and bloops you get from some modular demos. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3qtiZiugZmHna8

@@StarskyCarr Does the deepmind have a lot of menu diving for modulation and various settings? I know of assumed it was a very intant knob per function type deal. Is it not? The P8 I didn't really get on with the menu / modulation assignment side of things but from what I can see the rev 2 is much better.
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 6 жыл бұрын
Yes the rev 2 is easier than the P8, less scrolling. To access the modulation on DM just push the Mod button. You do, however, have to scroll through the options - 135 in total - but using the app should be easier. The deeper anything goes, the more options and menus so its a trade off between the 2. What I found most difficult to get used to was one set of env sliders - it's hard to tweak if you change from VCA to VCF and they're using different settings.

This is a lovely showcase of sounds. I’m curious to know what kind of programming is involved on the Deepmind? Everyone talks about menu diving but on the front panel there is enough functionality to match the Juno sounds without extensive menu diving I’m thinking? Apart from the effects?
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 4 жыл бұрын
It’s only when you start using all the various additional option - like FX, modulation, different envelopes/No of voices etc etc that it becomes pretty intensive menu diving. If you don’t dig that deep (like the using a Juno) you can still get a lot out of it. There’s always the editors to make things easier.

Hi ! your video si really impressive ! Just one question : i ask myself to buy the Behringer Deepmind 6, but i can not try it.. Do you think i can buy it just by seeing videos ? Btw, i play ambient, deep and dub techno and i want a synth comparable to juno for deep and warm pads, dubby sounds and melodies :) Thank you in advance !! :) :) from FR 🇫🇷

Oh also, i can buy the Roland Ju-06A with the Arturia Keystep, but maybe there is more possibilities with the Behringer.. Don't know if it's more interesting to buy the deepmind than the JU-06A
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 4 жыл бұрын
The ju06a will be closer to the original and be easier to use but the Behringer has more sound design possibilities, plus a huge range of FX and the apps to control it all. For deep dub and techno you’ll definitely need some FX so plan them into your system. If you buy from someone like Thomann you have the option to return it if it doesn’t suit your needs. If you’re REALLY into the Roland sound then go with the Ju - if you want some more flexibility maybe the Deepmind. :)

I wanted to really like the Deepmind but man, there is so much going on under the hood that it really turned me off to it. The simplicity and great sound of the Juno 60/106 is a big part of its' charm as an instrument. I really hope Behringer implements a simple or "authentic" mode that streamlines the Deepminds functions to most closely mimic a Juno 60/106.
@Charles-iu9uh
@Charles-iu9uh 4 жыл бұрын
except it's NOT a juno lol. And the menu is pretty simple. I have never heard anyone complain that a synth has too much. You can get great sounds barely going "under the hood" but when you do, the sounds you started with become elevated. Do you own a deepmind? I feel like you are just going off what everyone else has said but it is a really solid synth and you can now get a used deepmind 12 for sub 500$ if you look hard enough

@@Charles-iu9uh No I do not own a Deepmind but I've tried to like it several times in my local music stores and events. I bought the Korg Prologue instead . Reconsidered it as I have 6RU of unused rack space but again, I went for the Hydrasynth instead. Simply put, I just don't think it's for me.

I start all of these as an initialised patch. It's only a few tweaks here and there to get most 'standard' sounds. Once you start playing with the interactions between the envelopes and filter it'll comes to you pretty quickly.

I have the 106 I bought new in '84. Other than having to replace a VCF chip it has been very dependable and it was roaded hard. If I were playing out these days I'd use a controller and a laptop loaded with soft synths. I like the hardware, I just don't like carrying it around. I have 14 hardware synths in the studio and none of them can touch UVI Falcon. Still love the Juno, tho. It has a vibe. You put a lot of work into this. Nicely done. I'm really enjoying my Arturia Arp 2600 and Modular V, you might like those too. I took a college class on a 2600 in 1971. Arturia did an awesome job on both of those emulators. Better than the real thing, and only $149 at present.
