I love watching him conduct. He's so expressive towards the orchestra, and just gives the impression he's really really enjoying it. This shows in everything I've seen him conduct.

The articulation of the SHORT notes he wants is him showing it...it's a completely brilliant Beethoven cycle...drastic difference and it's sublime.

Too true! Not to be mean, but a lot of conductors (looking at you Barenboin or however it's spelled) seem to be almost on autopilot giving little information to the players, but Jarvi has every note for every player on his mind (you can even compare how he vs others use the baton, Jarvi's seems to be expressing every little twist of the piece!

I sit here with tears streaming down my face (with glass of wine in hand)... Can't do that at a live concert. One of the most spell bindingly authentic performances of the 5th I have ever witnessed. Jarvi really "Get's it", in ways that others seem to completely miss by comparison. He really "owns it" and yet is gives a very sympathetic treatment of the light passages... Are we not so lucky (as apes with tools and suits) that we have a Beethoven a Jarvi and incredible musicians that have made it their life's work to really "bring it"... We "lucky few"... [This is the first time I have seen Jarvi, but to some I guess he is a household name... will endeavor to learn more ]. Some of the best camera work and editing of an orchestral performance I have ever seen.

After Jarvi I can hardly listen to anyone else's Beethoven. He brings out the raw cosmic lightning and vast view of Beethoven like nobody else, showing us anew why LVB is the very pinnacle of music--as Beethoven said, "Music is a higher revelation than all of philosophy." We hear that here. Total clarity, total energy, godlike humour, and utter self-transcending profundity. Tears if wonder and gratitude well up whenever I listen to Jarvi's Beethoven.

I have this whole set and it is my go to set. What other performance have you heard the piccolos so prominent in the last mvmnt.? Search on YT for a 12 minute explanation of the 5th (1st mvmnt) by Bernstein, that also includes discarded sketches that he threw away. But Lenny places them in the 1st movement for you to hear why LVB discarded them. Also anything by Gerard Schwarze where he explains most of the symphonies at length. And now a blast from the past! kzbin.info/www/bejne/gInXk3aMm5ubi5I

Too true! Though you should also check out the 9'th performed at the Proms 2017, if anything can compare with Jarvi's rendition it's that one (although Oslo with that brilliant young (24 years old) conductor (who is, at 24, performing my favorite music of all time, i'm totally not jealous tho!) is very good too! The 7'th done by "Iván Fischer | Concertgebouworkest" is very good too! Also, hr-Sinfonieorchester ∙ Andrés Orozco-Estrada does all the symphonies very well. Still hard to say any of them beats Jarvi! He's communicating so much with the musicians, you can see he and they have a very tight bond of skill!

What a spectacular reading of this famous Beethoven symphony. I'll be 72 in 2 months, that makes almost 70 years of listening to this piece. I received the Toscanini/NBC Orch recording for my 2nd birthday. After watching this video, it's almost like hearing this music again, but for the first time. Thank you Maestro and this marvelous orchestra.

I grew up with performances of Beethoven's symphonies that were enhanced, if you will, as anticipations of Bruckner and Mahler, with all the grandeur, extreme drama--and bathos--of late Romanticism. As much as later composers channeled Beethoven, he also channeled what came before. Performances like this make me hear Beethoven as a continuation of antecedents (especially Haydn's Opus 50 F# minor quartet and the slow movement of Symphony No. 103)--but also as a departure from them. That's one reason why this Beethoven sounds more radical than a version closer to the idiom of the late 19th century.
@Sibethoven
@Sibethoven 4 жыл бұрын
the mid to late 20th century practice, over expending every aspects, to a very extreme extend. super slow tempo, super heavy, super personal, super large orchestra. I always wonder why, is it because of all those crazy anti human events and the great wars that people were living in such an atmosphere and needed that to compensate? From a musical aspect, is it very simple to understand that it is better to perform beethoven with how it should be (i.e. a 50-person orchestra). Because beethoven wrote for a 50-person orchestra, so there are many unique and important counterpoints on each individual parts. Because each individual part is supposed to be able to make an impact to the music. If you play it with a big orchestra, you cant hear the clarinet playing its interesting counterpoint, but with a 50-person orchestra, you can.

I like the fact that although this is a modern orchestra, he uses natural (valve-less) trumpets. The nature of natural trumpets compared with modern trumpets adds greatly to the dramatic tension - Harnoncourt said something along the lines of natural trumpets producing a driving force without overpowering volume, and if you were to have modern trumpets produce the same drive, they would have to play too loud (basically it needs to be at the top of their dynamic range)

if you notice, all of the rythmic section are played on period instruments (small timpani, natural trumpets and gut strings double basses) and that is the main key of why this recordings are so unique

This is a great performance. If I had a son or a daughter who wanted to be a conductor, or even a composer, I would say - listen to the moment where the clarinet begins a beatific phrase, replied to by the rest, at 9:05-9:48 , then listen to another moment where the woodwinds decide to break into a relative and unexpected silence, again replied to by the rest, at 14:39-15:07 ---- that, my friends - the beautiful path of musical sounds - is the ART OF MUSIC

I believe that the very soul, emotion and motion expressed in this symphony (as well as in other great pieces of music) is the explanation and reason of life. This is beyond humanity; paradoxically, it was a human who composed this.

Beethoven is ten time faster and mor exactly than the others and you need all your energy!
