What I love about your videos is I feel like I'm standing there next to you and you are showing me how to do it. Not a "tutorial " the way some people do them but just a fellow farmer showing me what to do in plain English that some of us newbies understand better.

Talk about old seeds, we planted some thirty year old beet seeds very heavy because we've been told they don't last too long, but it was a variety I wanted to keep. We had about a 10' row come up and doing very well, so that will give us some new seeds. We did the same thing with old Poppy seeds. We got lots of good seeds from them, and I'm still working on the old the old New Zealand Pear Tomato, which is a paste tomato that I started last year, but it didn't come up til late in the season, so we brought it in and have kept it through the winter. It grew to the ceiling with no tomatoes and I kept saying, even it I only get one tomato from it, I will be satisfied because then we will have seed to start over with. The plant finally started dying so I cut all the dead off and was getting ready to take it outside, cut it down and see if it would start over. That was when I noticed one bloom which the stem hadn't dried up and fallen off yet, so I left it in the house and two weeks later we saw one little tomato starting. It's about an inch long now, and my big experiment successful.

This video takes me back to when my grandma and me used to plant our greens. I had forgot and you brought it all back to me. Loved the memory and really picked up some great points. My little garden is not that big but we love mustard greens. Now I can plant them again. I was so tired of buying them. They just taste better from the garden. Thanks

Danny & Wanda: how to you plan your gardens? How do you time your crops for harvesting?
@DeepSouthHomestead8 жыл бұрын
We know which crops need to be planted early and how many days until harvest. We plan which crop comes next. Example: English peas are planted late Jan and harvest end of March or first of April. After that we planted corn which we harvested at the end of the summer. Then the same ground will be used for fall greens. Then the cycle will start over next year.

I hope I am blessed with lemon grass that grows as well as yours. I am just beginning to grow it. Still not cool enough to plant the greens, still getting in the 90's during the day. Of course, once this hurricane passes i bet we get fall weather. Lord willin it will pass and do little damage.

I pray that the Hurricane gets by you with not damage. We are hoping the heat doesn't kill our small plants. I hope your lemongrass grows well next year. Thanks

Love lemongrass, but in central Illinois it is a seasonal plant :( Thanks for the garden tips. Do you guys do any square foot gardening? I have top raised beds and my husband is going to make me 2 more 4x8 beds. We live on a 1/5 if an acre within city limits and due to limited space square foot gardening has been recommended for a larger crop. Your thoughts?

The amount you plant and harvest seems more than what you two would need for just you. Do you give excess to family members? Do they help when they visit? lol
@theIAMofME8 жыл бұрын
I know. I think the same thing every time. But, they know what they need. I am assuming that they over plant for what doesn't make it or gets eaten by a critter. I don't know. It's just mind boggling to me how much they grow. I also wonder if the kids ever come and help.
@DeepSouthHomestead8 жыл бұрын
We plant for us and the critters or crop failure. Both happen and when one crop does well, we preserve it. Example: 2 years ago we had an abundance of English peas. We canned over 60 pints. Last year we didn't can more than 20 pints. So it helped having a little extra. This year we hoped for the 60 pints, but only produced about 40 pints due to one garden not making. So we use excess for the lean years. No the kids do not come help in the garden. All of them live at least an hour away. But we do gift them with food when they visit. Christmas is food gifts also. Thanks
@theIAMofME8 жыл бұрын

When you sow old seeds, how long do you give them to prove themselves? (germinate and sprout those first two leaves) and do you tend to re-sow the same seed or a different crop in the row altogether?

early and late greens always have the best flavor. is this a mustard/spinach mix? I ate so many greens last year they gave me gout. I still eat them just not every meal. do you plant turnips for fall too? htgde. thank you.

We planted collards, spinach, and mustard in different rows. We planted the turnips in the field for the deer. We harvest what they don't eat. Last year we had an abundance of turnip roots. Thanks
