Add a pot of white beans cooked with ham hocks - and I’m moving in. Don’t forget the homemade butter for the cornbread, hot sauce and chow-chow for the beans. I’m old enough to remember wood cook stoves, and Johnny houses and water that was only running if you hauled it from the well and ran the bucket to the kitchen - even bathing in a big galv tub with water warmed on the cook stove. That cook stove went all year - winter and summer - if you wanted to eat that was. I grew up on this kind of eating - still do eat it.

Putting straw around my tomato plants this year sure helped keep the weeds down and also kept the soil from splashing up on the plants. I will be doing that from now on. You'll have to have some pickled onions to go with that first batch of collards you cook up.

Over 3 years later now, do u have a collard tree? How did your georgia collards do. I want some now. Yours is about the 3rd r 4th ga collard video I've seen lately. I hadn't heard of them b4. R u n the south? I am, so I wonder about the warm weather but I planted mustard, collards, cabbage, kale, about a month ago. I'm a rookie, so bear w me. Now I'm thinking they might bolt b4 getting tall.... They just started coming up. .. I didn't know onions like cool weather either, n just planted ends as I bought from the grocery store. Now I see em bolting, so I cut it off but not all so I can see the difference they do, n get seeds also. Did I do right? It's my 2nd try n a yr having a pot garden so I appreciate ur tips n advice. I'm doing good, switching from less houseplants 2 more edible plants. .... Marsha.

Hello Marsha, welcome to our community and the channel!! Collards are a cool weather crop for me here in Mississippi and yes, them jokers will bolt when the temps get warmer, good thing is when them plants bolt and go to seed, you can save them seeds for next year!! What growing zone are you in? Sounds like your banging the container garden, ya just need to know what'll grow for you in your grow zone!! I thank ya for watching and commenting, have a good week!! @HomeInTheSticks3 жыл бұрын
Hello Milo, welcome to our community and the channel!! I watered those collards twice a week normally but it depends on the weather and heat, I've watered several times a day in the past because it gets that hot over here!! If you pay attention to your plants, they'll let you know when they need a drink!! Hope this answers your question!! Thank ya for watching, do come back and visit when ya can!! Dan

How do you harvest collards after you pick them....do you par-boil before putting in the freezer??
@HomeInTheSticks5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mrs Diana, I usually pick them, give em a wash, cut them up into strips of sorts and vacuum seal them!! A lot of folks par-boil them but I just vacuum seal them and they go straight into the freezer, then again, mine don't last long in the freezer lol!! Thank ya for watching mam!! Dan

Hello Willie Freeman, welcome to our community and the channel!! @HomeInTheSticks5 жыл бұрын

Without seeing the plants Mrs Karen that may be hard to answer. Are you having a aphid problem, maybe a watering issue as well? What are the temps at your home place, high heat could cause the young leaves to fall off as well. Dan
