Deer Attacks While Filming Kentucky Afield

While filming a Kentucky Afield segment at the Salato Wildlife Education Center a whitetail deer became aggressive and attacked host Dave Shuffett, Biologist Lauren Schaaf, and KDFWR employee Johnny Widener. Ultimately the tussle lasted nearly 45 minutes.
Johnny was gored and required minor surgery to repair his leg. The deer was secured with the help of several other employees. #deer #attack #hunting #fishing #conservation

I don't know about that. You don't want to get kicked by the rear legs either, because that's a possible lights out scenario. He tried to grab the rear legs from out of the kick zone and it broke free. Best move he had was to jam that dowel into it's belly a few times so I think his mistakes were simply that he was afraid to hurt the deer and he underestimated how winded the Ranger was getting. People who have never been in a real fight before don't really understand how fast your strength drops out from under you. He very well could be a coward for all I know but I see this as more of a matter of poor judgement under stress. Plus in my own life, there's times where I got the pink mist and went overboard with aggression and then there have been times where I lost initiative and my knees kind of locked up. Resistance to freezing under stress is part courage but mostly, it's training.

I know. Very foolish.. up here in northern Ohio we just had 2 bucks gore a couple guys. One is dead now and the other had more than 200 stitches in his gut from the antlers! Both men were hunters that were caught totally off guard. The one that died was hurt from behind and got pierced through the heart and the other guy was a bow hunter who saw the deer enter the woods a ways from his stand and he was going home when the deer rushed him. They fought and the deer got away but he went to the ER and almost died from it. Big bucks are incredibly strong.

I was archery hunting in December many years ago when I was put in a very scary situation. It was late in the afternoon. I didn't see a deer all day. I was feeling pretty discouraged and tired so I decided to head home. I was probably a quarter mile from home and I came across some fresh tracks in the snow. So I stepped over to a big maple tree and gave a grunt on my call. At this point a deer snorted down the hill from me and ran up the hill to my right. I was actually facing up the hill because my view was better. That deer was stopped to my right just out of sight I couldn't see it at all. That deer to my right was making noises I have never heard a deer make ever. At times it sounded just like someone pulling over a chainsaw. Then it would start out with a loud clicking noise and go right into a wheeze snort. There was a light breeze from my left and once every little bit when it would blow I could smell tarsal gland. Everytime I got a wiff of the taral that deer to the right would go nutts. I honestly don't know how long I was pinned to that tree. It seemed like hours and almost dark. Then all of a sudden I saw a doe in front of me through the slash. She stood there for a minute then took off and everything quieted down. I never even saw a buck out of this whole ordeal but I know there was two of them there competing for the doe. I realize this is extremely rare. Nothing like this has ever happened before or after and I have been hunting my whole life. When I bow hunt now I always carry a handgun and always will. I just felt the need to share my story. My very scary story.

Two deer were standing right in front of me maybe 10 feet away. They stood their ground and looked at me. I immediately walked toward a building where I saw some loose rocks on the ground. Grabbed some and tossed them toward the deer until they walked away, so I could get into the fence I was going toward which they had blocked. I may have saved myself a charging at.

Large animal? It's really not that big, white tail bucks are quite strong though
