I enjoy hearing facts based on research. I’ve always disbelieved the moon phase junk, hunted the rain and pee out of my stand. I’ve also had numerous bucks/does under my stand scent checking my urine. Not once have they appeared nervous or busted me due to urine. Thanks Kip for stating what the research shows.

Precisely. As long as one is in the woods, they have a chance. Guarantee you'll have zero success sitting at home. for some reason hunters are obsessed with highest odds days, etc. Just relax and get out there and enjoy the experiences. Deer are killed at all hours of the day, in all weather types, at all times of the season.

I have been a huge fisherman and hunter for a long time. I have kept a journal log of certain moon phases when I have caught a really large bass or killed a nice buck.I rarely see any deer after a full moon no matter what the weather conditions are. More than 75% of the time it was during a new moon or a small crescent moon and a few during the half-moon phase. It could just be a coincidence; however, I believe fronts definitely impact movement the most. This past year I killed a big 8 point during a new moon in November. It had been in the 60s all week and dropped to the high 30s that weekend. I saw 7 deer before I harvested the 8. I enjoy hearing different experiences and opinions.

Biggest buck I ever shot was right after I had a leak and then lite up a smoke. Deer in farm areas see and smell humans/machinery (farmers) all the time and become accustom to it. If a farmer is working a 200 acre field and he has to take a leak he aint driving the tractor all the way back up to the house then back out again LOL.

My second year hunting I peed early in the morning and then moved further back into some pines. About 60 yards from my pee. In an hour, 2 doe walked right up to that area. I got a mature 7 year old doe that the DNR aged for me by cutting too see the teeth. Maybe bucks are different, but old bladders don't make for a comfortable hunt unless you empty them.

I went out on a morning hunt in early November this year. I sat down in my shack a few minutes before shooting hours, and a light rain started. I thought to myself "damn. I'm not going to see a thing now." 15 minutes later a nice big 8 pt. stepped out, and I had an 18 yard shot. I couldn't believe it!!! That was the earliest I ever got a deer in any season since I have been hunting. I have been missing out on the rain hunts because of that rumor. Tracking was difficult. Even though I started right after I shot him, the blood washed away quickly. Luckily he only went about 40 yards and I found him right away.

I used to bowhunt several different private land sites for a total of 70 sits a year. Wind direction & your route to & from your sitting place has alot to do with it. Hunting more evenings & throwing in a morning hunt here & there in a location which has different terrain as far as cover worked for me. Being clean & quiet along with less movement will also help your success. The rain & wind r big factors rather than temp & barometer. I've found 🧊 fishing has more to do with barometer imo. Walking during the rain & being setup in your 🌳 b4 the rain stops is a huge advantage. I had alot of success when the moon was between new & 1st quarter. Seemed to not have the effect on deer during the other phases. In fact the day after the 1st quarter moon all the way up to the time when the full moon is waning seem to affect the deer the same. However I've done a few full moon all day sits & have seen several animals like foxes moving @ high noon that I found interesting. Any way u can find a way to allow yourself to turn the odds in your favor slightly on a target animal is a good thing. But it's usually combining many different factors that all exist on one day that u must be out there. Like 2 years ago when Halloween was on Saturday the 31st. Then again a couple of weeks later on Saturday the 14th. Those r 2 deer movements I remember the most from the last 5 years.

I appreciate your video and research it has helped many. After 40+ years of hunting I have had some of my best bucks taken in a nice light rain. I smoke a pipe and do not hesitate in the stand, many will argue with me but i have burnt my pipe and had very nice bucks come in and hang out to check it out cigarettes may be very different. As for the moon I have personally journaled the 4 phases of the moon, to the sides and overhead or below feet. When moon rise or go to feet they travel to feeding area and when it goes down they travel to secure areas to frolick or bed. 2 to 3 hours into a phase is peak activity. I have taken plenty of deer in areas that I peed yet i have watched several real quality bucks skirt around that same area so when horn hunting I take that extra precaution. This is just my lifetime observations and not to be taken otherwise. Regardless of weather, moon or how bad I gotta poop when I can hunt i do my best to stay all day as I learn something new every time. God Bless

The shorter days trigger the increase in testosterone in bucks, so they loose their velvet and summer coats and start "bulking up" for the fall. Testosterone continues to rise throughout October and November and remains high until the bucks loose their antlers.

On heavily pressured public land in SE PA, I use my own bottled urine in every mock scrape I make. And have the trail cam videos and photos to prove it attracts bucks of all ages. I even pour it on the licking branch and they lick and eat the leaves. Some bucks show up within hours of when I made the scrape. Letting your urine sit in an open bottle for a week turns it darker and makes it smell musky like buck urine. I'm convinced they smell testosterone and have no idea its human.

I have found up in Michigan a new moon or even a lot of heavy cloud cover at night for extended periods tends to intensify rutting activity but the rut happens just about to the day every year regardless. This seems to be the case in Iowa too.... Also, I used to pee in scrapes & mock scrapes as well as out of my tree stand back in the early 80's & found that deer are often attracted to it & will open up scrapes around the scrape you peed in or ignore it when just peeing in your spot, but there were also times when they would freak out & disappear from the area or snort. I think it can vary on a persons personal body chemistry at the time, but most of the time it wasn't an issue so I will pee in my spot if I have to go.

As far as the scientific data goes, we are un aware positive or negative results of using either. That's not to say there isn't some kind of data out there, though. Forget about Penn State, I researched it myself, I’m big on being scent free but urine won’t bother deer and could attract them. I just got done peeing one time after rattling, a buck came and the wind changed so he was downwind but I still got em with a bow on the ground. 100% coyotes are attracted to human pee. I went coyote hunting before with my friend, before we went into the woods we both urinated next to my car and when we came back there were coyote tracks going all around my car literally 1 foot away circling. Another thing I noticed through the years, I mostly hunt off the ground so when I get to say a big tree I clear a spot all the way around the tree from leafs and sticks incase I have to move around one side when a deer is coming. What I noticed is if I go back to that tree the next day there are deer tracks all over the bare spot I cleared. More than likely it’s due to deer having easy access to the soil. At first I was thinking it might be my cover spray (which it could) or salt coming off my body but the salt guess can’t be correct so it definitely has to do with getting at the soil. So a good tip is to clear small 3x3 ft soil patches by your stand. Not only will deer be attracted to it but it also acts as a cover scent because the smell of the soil is stronger than the smells of leafs and so on so it acts as a natural cover scent. But still got to be scent free unless you know exactly the trail the deer will take and your downwind...but that rarely happens where I hunt, deer use trails but if your calling or it’s the rut those buck can come from any direction and usually will if the area has any hunting pressure the buck will circle downwind. Reason I say forget about Penn State is because they do research on deer that have zero hunting pressure so test can be false

A different scent in the hunting woods sometimes work out for you. I had the smoke from a Thermocell’s attract deer. Watched them lip curl walking into the smoke and walk straight to me. Now if it’s a shooter deer that’s good. If it’s not a shooter, it’ll ruin your hunt. Because that non shooter will alarm the world of your presence..

When deer smell a NEW scent in their living space, they want to learn everything they can about WHY that new scent is there in that space. They also want to learn if it is being omitted by a dangerous source or a non-dangerous source. If they can determine that the new scent is mixed with human scent, they be GONE! Or - if it's coming from a liberal Democrat, they'll relocate to another county or another STATE if need be.

One major thing overlooked by 'scientific studies' that you've got to actually hunt A LOT of different sites (as in states, regions, etc) to understand...is that deer are a 'close territory animal'...most herds will stay on a 200 (or less) acre piece of land their whole life...so what is 'normal' for what you hunt may be insane for another area. I grew up being told 'deer see movement', 'deer smell your urine', 'deer forage at full-moon night', 'deer don't look up unless they have experience being shot at from heights', etc. In reality, this is NOT ALWAYS TRUE! I found this out when I bought a remote land tract in 2000, scouted it heavily for the pre-season, lot of sign, no visuals (no good game cams back then, either), several scrapes, tons of rubs...figured 'not sure when they are here, but I'll make opening weekend out of figuring it out'...set up my stand the week before and left it...come in on opening morning pre-dawn, get set up...and was amazed at all the contradictions I observed that weekend. The day before was full moon, but they didn't start moving until 8am, zero wind made them nervous and antsy...first buck in looked directly at me (20-ft up a tree) and without flinching, ran off immediately...two does followed him, and did the same (tree-staring deer? interesting). This went on all weekend. I asked several who lived in the area what gives with the deer here, and they simply replied 'it's harder to hunt our deer than other places'...no other explanation given...made no sense, but convinced me that 'expert advice' for Ohio doesn't mean a THING in Missouri...and trying to 'follow expert advice' will lead you into eternal circles of confusion...not into a good deer steak!
@Whitetail_Properties
@Whitetail_Properties 4 жыл бұрын
We agree completely that different regions, states, counties and even individual farms can all hunt differently for a multitude of reasons- theres no question there. But, a lot of these studies Kip is referring to are conducted in different regions and states and then all the data is compiled. It doesn't me its the gospel, it is simply stating the scientific aspects of deer movement patterns that have been collected. Again, they are still wild animals and can act differently based on region, habitat, pressure and dozens of other factors - which we are fully aware of. Best of luck this fall!!

Very interesting, I’ve heard the full moon before and from my own experience have never done any good in rainy weather, even with poncho on and all, now weather changes, I.e. going to rain or snow the next day, I’ve noticed deer out a lot of times the evening prior in increased numbers. Also windy conditions have at times been favorable for me, because I also try to find a low area where the wind isn’t hitting as much and it has paid off at times.

Do mule deer act different with any of these compared to whitetail deer? It seems mule deer where I live can be very oriented to the moon phase. A buddy had a massive buck he was catching on a game cam. When it came time to hunt it was close to a full moon and he was only catching him around 2:00am moving around. Never could find him during the day. That’s just one example.

One example is hard to make a judgment on.. the information presented was based on studies done on whitetail deer throughout the country. One could say it relates, and on the other hand the variables could say it doesn’t.

@@Whitetail_Properties I was going down a rabbit hole wondering if habitat and behavior differences between them could cause this. Does desert sagebrush lit up by full moons make mule deer more comfortable moving at night than thick woods? The more I thought about it, a predictor could have caused this movement. He has caught wolves and mountain lions on the same cam location. It is known bear country as well. All the other full moon hunts I can think of had bad weather being a factor, which I believe is more of a reason animals move or bed as compared to moon phases. Sometimes I complicate things more than needed, both are crepuscular.

All hunting areas / dates are not the same. The moon might not make as much of a difference when the woods is quiet or low hunting pressure. Put on a weekend gun opener or snow on the ground in a high powered rifle state with heavy hunting pressure. I have counted over 50 shots in the area on opening day. If you have a full moon you will hear hardly any shots by the 3rd. They go nocturnal fast and hard. It's not as bad on a new moon especially if there is not any snow. Then again most people would not see as many deer so there would be less shooting.

Purely anecdotal.... We have 3000 acres of farms lands and when harvest season comes, we can't be spending our time always going to the bathroom so we pee all over the fields when need be. We have plenty of whitetails still roaming around. The Moon phases really only affect nocturnal animals as the closer to the full moon it is. It gets much much easier for animals to see in the dark. So the full moon is naturally going to make some animals more active and aware.

Jeff from Whitetail Habitat Solutions also did a few videos on peeing in the woods. He made a mock scrape and peed on it, and monitored it. It attracted plenty of deer. The whole idea is that, with some very minor difference, urine is urine. A deer doesn't know whether it is deer urine, dog urine, human urine, etc. Most urine has a similar smell, especially after it has been on the ground for a few minutes, and any differences in smell that could possibly be based on dietary differences have dissipated. I have a personal experience with peeing in the hunt area. 2 seasons ago, I had the urge to pee badly, so I did it right under the tree where the stand was, before morning light. Around 8:30 am, two fawns came by and one of them spent almost 5 minutes at the pee location. She was just sniffing it. Either she was not experienced cuz she was only like 1 year old, or the smell got her curious to stick around. Again she was only a fawn.

On peeing in the woods, wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself. I was bear hunting in the Nez Perce Clearwater a couple weeks ago. Staying out all day, I'd need to relieve myself periodically. I picked a spot about 150 or 200 yards from my ground blind to pee. Just a random spot. Came back the next morning to see that it had been scraped to pieces. So I peed there some more that morning and early afternoon, only to hear a deer snorting and scraping my "urinal," and heard this every morning around 9 and every afternoon around 4:15 or 4:30 This pattern repeated the entire week. If it had been a one-off, I'd be "meh." But it happened every day, and the scrape got wider and deeper each day.

So after every rain I would go around at strategy points and pour out pee that I had peed in a bottle and spray axe cologne on tree right above it. Well I had been doing this for a couple weeks. I had just done this Saturday midday and following day Sunday I went duck hunting and when I came out from duck hunting to get on four wheeler there across the field where I had put pee and cologne in several places was one of the biggest bucks I’ve seen.. Here in NY the police / game warden will issue a free tag , upon request , to facilitate legal transport and processing should one witness or be involved in a deer / vehicle collision. Some towns even have a " road kill call list " . You can actually fill your freezer without ever firing a shot . Just saying . No shame in not wasting a valuable resource .
