Ive eaten skunk twice in my life. The 1st time i tried it, it was absolutely disgusting. The 2nd time an old timer prepared it for me. He insisted that the way you clean and cook it makes all the difference. I tried it and I must tell you, I prefer skunk over pig and deer meat. You have to remove certain glands in the animal. Unfortunately he passed before he could teach me where and how to remove the glands.

To get a skunk out of a trap, get a tarp, or blanket. Spread it out as far as your arms can. Stay behind the tarp walk up to the trap and lay it over the trap. Pick up the trap by the handle (through the tarp) carry it to where ever ypu want to release it. Open the trap door and latch it open and move away quickly. A skunk will seldom spray unless he sees you. This way you always have a barrier between you and the skunk! Caught a lot of skunks, havent been sprayed yet! I live in southwest Oklahoma! P.s. - dead skunks make really good trap bait for coyotes. Just thought I'd edit and add that!

Rob - Keep these ingredients separate but handy until you need to mix them to remove any skunk spray from you, the girls, dogs or equipment -- The formula is: 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (a fresh bottle), • ¼ cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), and • 1-2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap. Ingredients must be mixed in an open container and USED IMMEDIATELY AFTER MIXING - 5-gallon bucket is recommended. HOWEVER, there are a few key warnings to keep in mind about this homemade de-skunking solution: • Never use this solution near your dog [or kids] eyes and be careful when applying it around the mouth. • Peroxide may bleach your dog’s fur or kid's hair, an effect that is especially noticeable on black or brown dogs [kids]. • Peroxide may also bleach any other material it comes in contact with, like your clothes, towels or furniture.

This one brought back a memory from many years ago. Me my dad and a couple of my brothers were headed to our deer camp, my dad ran over a skunk that had already been ran over. We heaved and gagged all the way to camp, dad said don’t say anything he pulled up right by the fire where everyone was standing, we got out walked over and in about 10 seconds we were the only ones left!😂😂😂😂😂😂

My husband is an animal control officer, and he deals with skunks daily. We have A LOT of rabies in our area, so no skunks are allowed to be relocated. He has the knack of walking right up to the trap (in a slow and non-threatening manner), and he covers the trap with a blanket. They have to move them to another location (due to dispatching them). He then sets them back on the ground, uncovers them, lets them settle for a minute, and shoots them. He said out of the hundreds of skunks he's dispatched, only 3 ever skunked him. They didn't even spray in their truck. The other officers weren't as lucky, but we've always called him Dr. Dolittle with animals. He just learns their behaviors, and works alongside the animal to lessen their stress. I always told him, if you get skunked, I'll take clean clothes outside TO you. YOU stay outside and strip! Then he bags the stinky clothes and I have him hose the clothes down outside and spray dawn dish soap and baking soda on them-let them set until it's safe to bring the clothes inside to wash!!! He learned the hard way, if he came inside with that pungent odor! It's actually a sort of neurotoxin in the sense that it can stun another animal and cause acute distress and the immediate need for a emergency vet visit. It can cause death in rare occurrences.

My dad trapped skunks while going to school and nobody knew it, because he never got sprayed. He knew what he was doing. I was walking along a river bank and a skunk walked by me, looked at me waved and went on his way home. Calmness pays 🙂👍!

If you catch a skunk in a live trap,you can get an old blanket, slowly go up to the trap while holding the blanket open in front of you, wrap it around the trap to where the skunk is in total darkness, and carry off the trap. To dispatch the skunk I recommend taking the blanket wrapped trap to a pond and submerging it for a few minutes. I have gotten rid of several skunks this way without getting sprayed.

Sometimes raccoons will turn around and come after you. As an Animal Control officer I deal with them and skunks all the time. Glad you didn’t drown the skunks. In Texas that is considered animal cruelty and can get up to two years in jail.

Really doubt drowning is a crime in Texas. Setting traps up on drowning rigs when water trapping for raccoon/mink/muskrat is very common everywhere. I can maybe understand not being allowed to drown a pet. But there has to be an exception for hunting/trapping.

Hey Rob. Thanks for everything you do. I trap wildlife for a living and made the mistake using trash bags for skunks. I've had them rip up trash bags. I would recommend using cardbored to wrap your trap if your transporting wildlife.
