There are SO MANY things wrong with the police’s behavior, starting with the fact that they went into the restroom. Did they expect her to walk through the walls to get outside? Why not just wait for her and her child to come out? Bathrooms have one entrance and one exit. Think it through. -Second, they cannot detain someone without telling them why. The officer just kept saying “we have a reason”. That’s not good enough. They also don’t need to handcuff and throw someone around if they “just need to ask some questions”. They were acting like bullies as they tried to take her to the station and make her incriminate her friend. If she were arrested, they should have Mirandized her. The SMARTEST thing she said in this whole debacle was asking to call a lawyer. -Third, having another officer search her person and taking her phone-her actual property-when she was not technically under arrest is a violation of the 4th Amendment (unlawful search and seizure). Police cannot just rummage through someone’s pockets, especially when they were not the one seen committing a crime. She said she allowed it, but her attorney could still nail them for this (it’s happened in previous cases). The legal system is not only about innocence and guilt. It has to be handled a certain way (procedural laws). This is why so many “guilty” people walk free. Police and lawyers making these kinds of mistakes is what keeps criminals on the streets. Notice how her case was QUICKLY dismissed despite her verbal confession on video. They messed up and they knew it. Be warned: If you don’t know your rights, best believe an officer WILL infringe upon them eventually. Some may be counting on your ignorance. Don’t give away your freedoms. They legally cannot make anyone say anything.

If it was about them endangering him, then why send him to dcf instead of a next-of-kin? In situations like that, in which they're still in the store and the cost of the item(s) is under $100, I think security (not store employees) should just recover whatever was taken then escort the culprit(s) out and make them leave. Only call police if they don't cooperate. All that drama and the case got thrown out with all the charges dropped.

I'm against stealing, but it's officers and security like this that make me have bad feelings against them even more than the thieves. They are always trying to manhandle someone right from the start, it doesn't matter if you are resisting or not. That one girl wasn't even trying to steal based on what they were saying. It's like they thought she knew the other girl was going to steal and she should be cuffed and detained just for knowing. I do think if you steal you should be arrested... but the law should be you need to be walking OUT the store first. It's not actually a crime yet if you are still in the store and have made no attempts to leave. All confrontations should take place at the exit or in the parking lot. At the exit is attempted theft and outside the store is actual theft. You'll never find me intentionally doing anything where I'll have to deal with abusive cops or security, the only way I deal with them is if I'm wrongly targeted. There are some good and fair law enforcement out there, but too much of the time many are on power trips and ready to do you more harm than necessary.

First of all, they should've waited until she came out of the bathroom. She wasn't going anywhere. Secondly, one of them should've secured the baby so he didn't end up getting hurt while arresting her.
