Great vid. Considering moving from a GH5 to a FF lumix. Question. I shoot in a small room and need to knock out the background for talking heads. I've got about 5 feet behind the me/subject and and not a ton of room to move the camera back. What would be a good lens to knock out the background reasonably well and get a 3/4 shot from head to mid chest?
@fatherofbirds4 жыл бұрын
Path Less Pedaled 5ft is pretty tough, I would probably go with the 16-35 F4. I know F4 doesn’t sound shallow but on full frame it’s like having a F2 on Micro 4/3. This would allow you to complained zooming in, moving your subject closer to you because you won’t have to back up as far. Check out my video with the 16-35mm F4. For my talking head part the camera is less then arms length from me. The closeness combined with the F4 and zooming in slightly makes a pretty nice blur of the background.

You could always look into primes. I've been picking up Voigtlander M mount glass for my S1 and I love it. You'd have to manual focus, but you can get a 21mm f 1.4, or the 35mm f 1.2 to really blur out those backgrounds. I got my Nokton 35mm f1.2 v II on ebay for $650. If you want autofocus, the new Lumix 85mm f 1.8 has been getting solid reviews, and there are more primes coming from Lumix in 2021.

I've been heavily considering the S5IIX to finally upgrade from the Nikon D3500 that got me into the industry 6 years ago. I have the Nikon 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 and 70-300 f/4.5-6.3 kit lenses. I'm primarily a creative photographer focusing on nature and dynamic lighting, both day and night shots. However, I also take a handful of portraits regularly, so I've been conflicted as to what lenses I should try juicing out of my budget. My initial plan was to go for the 24-105 f/4 for an all-rounder, add the 50 f/1.8 for portraits and long exposure, and later in the future add the 70-200 and a teleconverter. Having watched this, my only concern is the f/4 in long exposure and low light…maybe I'd be more justified if I added a 35 f/1.8? Man, it's hard to have a budget in this industry. 😅😂 Thanks for the informative video and comparison!

When I use the area focusing by taping on the screen however, the focus transition is smooth. Do I miss a setting in the menu to get smooth manual focusing?

LUISA BAKES I have the same set up, personally I’m going with a S5 as a C cam... (if they ever ship it to me 😢) The footage coming out of the S1H looks more film like mostly because of that AA filter. The S1 and the S5 have the same sensor so they will basically be giving you the same look. For B and C cams I find this to be fine, I personally feel like the extra $2000 could be better spent if you already have a S1H. Personally one of the nicest things about that AA filter is the softness it gives peoples faces. Super sharp sensors are great for picture and video but most people don’t want to see al of there pours. I would get the S5 and perhaps looking into some black mist filters which add a softness to footage. It will save you a lot of money and give you a cool artistic edge in my opinion.

But recently I was able to inspect another LUMIX 24-105mm F4, which was totally dust free. What about focus motor in 24-70mm on AF mode with full-time manual (manual focus override)? Is it still linear (like on MF mode) or variable (non-linear) like in many other lenses?
@fatherofbirds3 жыл бұрын
It is but the focus clutch helps a great deal.

What are your thoughts on pairing the S5 with canon glass... say the 16-35 4.0? using the sigma adapter
@Jaymino_3 жыл бұрын
Sigma MC-21 only allows single AF. That means no continuous-AF in video. If you use only manual focus, I think its reasonable enough!
@fatherofbirds3 жыл бұрын
Amazing if you don’t need autofocus. And I recommend doing it because EF is a strong mount if you ever wanted to switch bodies or go to other cameras you have a lot of options

@@fatherofbirds I do mainly Real Estate but like having the options... I've seen the over heating issues too and I get the hesitation but for my needs it's perfect... the ef lenses are almost better with the new focus system... I just wish RF wasn't a small fortune :(

F4.0 isn’t a deal breaker for me as I’m more interested in the macro and further reach, but I’m just wondering as how it performs with ISO performance with lowlight. Currently considering switching from the Z6 to this system so I’m curious to know.

It's slightly better than the Z6, but I would doubt you would notice the difference. It does have a 96MP multi shot mode as well.

What if you pair up the 24-105 with a Leica SL2S in regards of the stabilization? Does it works too?

I’m not sure unfortunately but if I come across the answer I will let you know.

Does the 24~105 OIS work on the Leica bodies, specifically the SL2-S?
@fatherofbirds3 жыл бұрын
I'm not 100% on this but I think it would because I haven't heard of lens stabilization not working on other bodies ever.

Yes, it works virtually as good on my original SL 601 as it does on my S1.

these are different systems. 15-35mm f4 is for full frame 8-18 is for micro 4 3rds. personally I like the 15-35mm on full frame is much more powerful imo

No but from what I here it’s pretty solid and potentially worth saving the $1000 dollars depending on the end game. I’m not sure after the update how much better the autofocus got between the 2.

Let me help you with that feedback to a small creator: "Hey man great video, thanks for the review. I was sometimes distracted by the focus hunting on that back window at some shots. Keep up creating!" - Coming from someone with 186k subs this had the potential to motivate... Just food for thought.

Haha, it’s okay. The point of these isn’t to sell them but show off what I like about them and show you guys what it looks like. While pulsing in videos does bother us videographers who are geared at looking for imperfection the customer and majority of the public don’t notice this as much. Manual focus for serious work. (The auto focus does destroy my life and windows sometimes though 😆)
