Thank you for posting this; it was very interesting. Clearly, the most important aspect of photography, even more so than this excellent equipment, is the skill of the photographer.

Great review! Is image stabilization for this lens now, not greyed out, with firmware v3.0 for the SL2?
@RichardSilvius9 күн бұрын
Covers a similar range as the Leica 24-90. A comparison could be interesting, to see how much image quality is sacrificed when using the panasonic.

Great to see non-Leica lenses taken seriously. Surprised that there is no visible dual stabilisation - I wonder if it does so behind the scenes anyway. There are already quite a few standard zooms in L mount apart from those you recently mentioned: 24-70mm Lumix S Pro Certified by Leica 20-60mm Lumix S >> 28-70mm Sigma C -- especially for the CL since it's both bright and small 18-56mm Leica TL

Hi, firstly thanks for operating such an informative (and entertaining!) channel. I always look at it to help with buying decisions. I'm primarily a Nikon shooter (but I do carry a Leica Q2 as a point and shoot) but I'm contemplating buying the SL2-S with the F/2.8 24-70 lens. I'm covering the national strike and other unrest in Medellín, Colombia, so I am considering the SL2-S instead of another Nikon Z6 with a F/2.8 z24-70. (I've been using a Z6 here, and it is certainly a capable camera but in terms of durability, there does not seem to be anything tougher than the SL2-S.) It looks like I'll certainly be sacrificing the speedier phase-detection AF on the Nikon, and covering demonstrations and unrest here is no so different than shooting sports--with the variable of sometimes having to dodge rocks, tear gas canisters, etc. Thanks again! Sincerely, Chris

I never really compared them but there is another video in the making for my channel on the 24-90, clearly worthwhile a look if I posted it in the next weeks.

Hello Math, me again (Z9 or SL2 guy, thank you for your previous answer) I rewatched that video and the one with the unicycle. And my question is : did shooting sport feel at some point that you’d rather have had another camera with you (such as the Z9) or did you feel comfortable using the SL2 with fast moving subject? Thank you 🙏

Thanks for a very useful review, especially the advice on fast action. I am curious as to how much better you feel the 24-90 Leica lens is in comparison?

According to Tony Northrop the Leica can’t take those kinds of photos, you didn’t know…you missed the shot…. Lol. Nice video
@photoeducationbydaniel3 жыл бұрын
The moment you start shooting wider open apertures the SL2 it's awful! Even the samples in the video there were out of focus missed images. In fact, the very first image is out of focus. The others are partly focused but that's because shooting at narrower apertures yes you can get everything in focus regardless of it actually missing in reality. Also if you look carefully he's captured the guy at the top of the ramp where the motion slows and stops before going back down and that's easy to focus even in manual! The camera struggles seriously when the action of the subject is coming towards the camera and you can see in the first image the camera missed focus and focused on the subjects behind the skater. The was the typical thing I found. You got to wait for the subject to get to the "crest" of the action then take the shot. Going with af-c the system pumps focus rapidly and in that lays the biggest issue! Leica shouldn't have used contrast detect, it's old and while it's nice for static work it's hopeless for anything in action unless you shoot the subjects travelling perfectly straight across the plane of focus. Leica got everything right and I was wowed but was super shocked at the focusing speeds and accuracy. It's the worst camera I've ever used out of all the cameras I've owned in terms of focusing. Even my very old D750 is more responsive! Wait I should say mobile is even faster
@jacqueslegouis96323 жыл бұрын
I’ve had the D750 and I now shoot the SL2, the Leica is either comparable or leagues better than the Nikon, you should actually try them both The only downside of the Leica is that the system doesn’t have as many native lenses compared to the Nikon otherwise it’s just a much better camera

Great work. Do you ever shoot B&W? Some of your action work would look great in monochrome.

The L Mount Alliance was a genuis stroke from Leica Camera AG, Panasonic and Sigma.

Goes to show that you can get fantastic images from a lens smaller lighter and a fraction of the cost of the native Leica lenses

Hi! thanks for nice review. I wanna ask, as I see that you have a video of the leica Sl2 with the sigma 24-70mm DG DN, which of this two zoom lenses, in your opinion, delivers better image quality or if you have to choose which one you like the most to fit in your SL2, the Pana 24-105mm or the Sigma 24-70mm DGDN thanks!!!!!!

Thank you for your comprehensive and great reviews of Leica and third party gear. I am wondering if there is any advantage of the Panasonic lens over the Sigma Art 24-70 beside the higher focal length? How is image quality compared to the Sigma lens? And would it be worth to select the Leica 24-70 lens (which is heavier and significantly more expensive though) in terms of handling (eg. focus speed and accuracy) and image quality? I have read in several articles that focus speed is the weak point of the Sigma lens, can you confirm this?. All my questions are related in combination with the SL2-S. Thanks for letting me know your thoughts on those questions above.
@mathphotographer Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the positive feedback and your thoughts. The combination I showed in the video works well although focus tracking on the SL2 is not super fast as I mentioned various times on my channel. My subjective impression is that the Leica 24-70 lens works best on the SL2 for sports & actions but you lose a bit on the tele side (70 vs 105). The Sigma Art 24-70 I have not tested for such shooting situations but can imagine that also here the original Leica lens might be a bit more snappy in focusing.

Hoi Math! I just recently discovered your channel and even more recently I noticed that you are not only from Switzerland but you actually live in Zürich! I am a 21 years old photographer from Winterthur, studying photography in Zürich, where I also work part-time in a photo studio. After a year of working in press photography I was finally able to afford my dream camera, a Leica m10p. I found a used model in mint condition with 1 year leica warranty in a camera store for 5100 CHF (!) in Switzerland and recognized it was my moment to strike😜 So yeah the camera is now sitting on my desk looking lovely but knowing that I wont be able to afford a lens for a couple more months it’s a bit frustrating... What I wanted to ask you: Would you feel like meeting up in Zürich for an afternoon, let me try your lenses on my Leica and have a couple of coffee or beer and talk about photography? To be clear, im not asking to take any of your lenses home or anything (I probably wouldn’t lend any of my lenses to strangers) but it would be very cool to be able to try out a few different M-lenses and talk about them with someone who has experience. If you got the time and you feel like meeting up sometime, send me an email Arthur@arthurgamsa.com Regards and keep putting out content! Arthur

Thank you for the very interesting video. Do you think the Leica 24-90 will be able to keep up in the same conditions?
@mathphotographer3 жыл бұрын
Autofocus will be a bit slower ... but Leica is good in firmware updates and that might help a bit on focus speed.
@18yearsoldnot Жыл бұрын
the bokeh on this lens is very dissapointing! I feel that is the drawback to the L mount alliance, because leica probably has a deal with the other allies that only they get to make the premium lenses.
