Look, Viv Campbell is an outstanding guitarist, but Steve Clark was just brilliant. Listen to the 2013 rerecords of the Hysteria songs, and they're just missing something. Steve gave every song it's heart and soul. RIP Steve

Viv's playing is up to snuff with Steve's. It's just hard to replicate those classics, or any previously recorded classic and do it proper justice because people are so used to hearing them the way they originally were. I think even if Steve was still around and they reissued those tunes, they'd still catch some negative criticism simply because they aren't the original hysteria/pyromania recordings we all came to love and played the shit out of. They had been playing these tunes live for years when they redid them, giving them a little bit of a "phoned in" sound. NOW..that's not to say that Steve wasn't a brilliant riff-maestro, but don't blame the lack of soul in Steve's parts on Viv. Also keep in mind they were a much older, less 'hungry' band when they were rereleased. PLUS NO MUTT THE SECOND TIME AROUND! Mutt put tons and tons of tedious time and effort into those original recordings. Anyways, Viv is damn good, but I think he gets somewhat overruled by Phil in the studio guitar-wise (maybe I'm wrong). Although, he did contribute to a lot of writing to The Sparkle Lounge. I just think that Sav and Joe are way too concerned with sounding like a 70s glam band these days and THAT'S what's been killing most of the post Euphoria material (yeah, a lot of euphoria was kick-ass, and I don't care who disagrees..Paper Sun, Promises, Day After Day, Demolition Man). It's Elliot and Sav man...they've somewhat killed any chance of sounding relevant that they had left by adding waaay too much Queen/Mott the Hoople sounding influences to the mix instead of continuing the sound that they established for themselves. They've kinda settled into their grandpa shoes. Viv deserves better to be honest..just my opinion. I still respect Lep for their accomplishments, and I think it's horseshit that they haven't been inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame yet because they are a legendary band. Sorry for the long ass rant.

It is unfortunate that creative genius and the brilliance that goes with it comes with such a high price tag for many of them, that being the depression and anxiety that rips their soul to pieces while alive. Certainly the onslaught of grunge after 1990 led to a reduction in demand for this type of music, but that isn't the only reason that Def Leppard's true last super album was Hysteria... Clark was a driving force behind the incredible production that was 80's Def Leppard. He's not the only one like this. Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue was/is the primary song writer for Motley Crue, but thankfully for Crue, he died and basically came back to life after a heroin overdose (true story). Some of the most incredible musical minds are so consumed by their demons, that they become a candle that burns at both ends. I miss Steve Clark, will never forget him playing Run Riot In The Round at Pershing years and years ago, when I was just a snot nosed teenager. They will forever be my favorite band.

wildcatter63 Vivian is a footnote compared to the late great Steve Clark
@karenglenn67074 жыл бұрын
@wildcatter63 neither Phil nor Viv are better players. Steve had the magic and when he died the magic left. He played from his soul and his guitar was an extension of himself.
@peytonbrezski4 жыл бұрын
wildcatter63 Steve has a different style than Phil and Viv. They were the typical 80’s rock and metal guitarists. Steve was like if jimmy page played in an 80’s hard rock band. In fact I’d say Steve was somewhat similar to slash. Your right Steve can’t shred as fast as Phil or Viv, but honestly I wouldn’t say Phil is much more technically skilled than Steve. Phil can play pretty fast but when he does that live, it’s usually pretty sloppy. I’d say Viv is probably the most technically skilled guitarist Leppard has ever had. But yea totally agree Steve has better feel and was the best writer. He’s in my top 5 favorite guitar players.

It’s hard to believe that this tour took place over 35 years ago. Back then I was 19 years old. I was blessed to attend this tour in Louisville, Ky. To this very day I still very clearly remember standing in the audience in complete amazement at the performance. The band was absolutely phenomenal and Joe’s voice was unlike anything I have ever heard. All I can remember was how incredibly powerful his voice was. One of the best concerts I have ever attended.

Leepifer trad. I had the chance to see them in Paris (Bercy) for Hysteria tour. I was on the Rick Allen side no arm, so impressive. What a sound and show it was. Each member were top performer. But the strongest memory is the Steve Clark solo, with his double guitar, runnin' like mad all along the stage, givin' incredible sounds and riffs. The crowd was totally in osmosis with him!
