He’s lucky that his accident did not happen a few years earlier or a comeback would not have been possible. A lot of credit is owed to Pete Harley, who designed Ricks’ first electronic kit when Midi was new in the mid 80’s, and encouraged him to play and assured him it would be possible with one arm.

Ok, the kick drum pedal is an Axis pedal with a custom footplate and a DW beater (Rick digs the weight of them). On that particular tour, the kick head was a Powerstroke 3 and the trigger was a Hart Dynamics modded ddrum (far more accurate and durable than the off the shelf ddrum triggers). The snare is a 13x5.5 (could be a 5) steal Yamaha snare (Rick's a Yamaha endorsee, so the kick is a Yamaha as well). For Cymbals, the crashes are 18 and 19" Zildjian Hybrid crashes (most of the time).

Thank you for showing us this. Very informative. Rick is a Thunder God for sure! I admire his strength and abilities. When I tore the ACL AND meniscus in my right knee. I kept thinking I am not going to walk normal and I could not stand or walk on my right leg. I saw Rick playing drums. That made determined to try hard in therapy. Get my knee stronger. Kudos to Rick Allen for not giving up. That would've been so easy to do. "I'm a one-armed drummer. How the hell am I going to continue playing?" But thanks to ddrum who first helped him out if I'm not mistaken, and thanks to the other guys in the band for sticking with him, no pun intended. I saw Def Leppard on the Hysteria tour in 1988 and I watched Rick 90% of the time because I'm a drummer and I wanted to see how he did it live. Very impressive and I'm sure he's only gotten better since then.

Regarding the sampling, all of the drum sounds you hear out front (or on stage) are created by Rick and the band's producer/foh engineer. Some are pulled from original recordings, other's created to suit the live environment.

...the ride is a 20" K medium ride. Rick is very particular about the cymbal tones and will audition 20 or more pairs to find a set of crashes that he likes. The hats are all 13" Zildjians. It would be impossible to tell you what is up there on any given day as each "set" is is mixed up to get a similar tone across all four pairs.

Not quite. Actually there's no where near the technology for that yet. Drumming requires extreme reflexes and subtleties.
