It's the same with law enforcement. A cop can blatantly lie to you and it's considered legal, a part of their job duties. However, when a citizen lies to a cop it's illegal, and often ends up with the citizen being charged with a crime as well as being arrested and taken to jail. 2 tier judicial system for sure. Cheers

I love how he spent half the talk talking about monopolization and how competition was what once kept industry players in check, only to end the talk with "the answer is unions" instead of giving big tech the middle finger in response to the carrot on a stick of six figure salaries and going off to start the competition that is lacking People don't want enshitification, they just don't think they have a choice. Unions seize your voice for the collective while parasatizing a chunk of your salary for no results. Look no further than the globalized decadence of the "American" auto industry despite the existence of the UAW, or the animation industry despite sagaftra: in the age of globalization they don't have to care about domestic work because they can always outsource to another country willing to work for pennies on the dollar. You beat them with superior products as time in memoriam has proven, like what happened to Bell and IBM. For the history of entrepreneurialism in tech we have far too many "tech bros" looking for exit velocity from selling out start ups to the nearest VC firm shadow ran by big tech anyway; the pirates of silicon valley were subsumed by the sellouts of silicon valley, we need more 70s Apples and Compaqs than FAANG wannabes and that stubborn willingness to stand up to them in the face of hostile take over attempts will be far more effective at saving us than unionizing

I hope more people see this before censors get ahold of it. Especially younger folks who don't remember the internet before 2000's.

I almost cried, how we got here. Some people said tech talents are paid that much to stay in gigacorps because otherwise they would build competition. How god damn true.

Honestly why I don't run apps. If I can't do it through a browser I get to dictate terms of or in a sandbox I get to see all traffic moving in and out of, I'm not doing it.

hoestly the saddest thing is that while this is the most important talk I've seen since the last Cory Doctorow Defcon Talk, I don't know a single person with the attention span to watch it
@ince55ant3 ай бұрын
true, the thing i cant stop thinking is: if this talk was actually effective the megacorps mentioned would be suing the venue and organisers (among other punative methods) to silence it. They would be trying their damnedest to make him persona non grata. Hopefully they're just ignorant, overly comfortable in their hegemonic power.

@@ince55antone thing megacorps have become good at is appropriating counter culture and cynicism and using them to recapture people

Yeah that's a fair worry. But people like me are also watching way more of this than I thought I had the attention span for when I clicked, and I have almost zero experience with computing tools but he's inspiring the sh!t outta me, he's so engaging Maybe the powers that be know of and fear the potential harnessed power of ADHD hyperfocused hackers, might be why they make it hard to get diagnosis and medication. Only half joking 😅

only criticism is lack of spotlight on companies using H1-B to squeeze tech jobs. cory treaded around that one very carefully.

1:10 Uber used to be cheaper and pay more because of VC-Wallstreet funding not because it was better. You can’t force people to give it more money to burn on an unsustainable business model unfortunately
