@Alex Pritchard Right! At some point, trying to take someone out of the comfort zone won't work, since it's been tried before. With the amount of times I've seen a closed Sicilian, I know what I'm supposed to do. When I play thr French, I do get disappointed when it's the exchange variation, since I find that to be a very slow, boring game, but still playable.

I got to play against GM Johan Sebastian earlier this week. He came to my country to play and passed by my campus. I was black in a rossalimo and got an amazing position but he just dominated me when i was out of book. You GM’s are absurd because even when you dont know what to do the best moves just fly out naturally. I would love to play Dany sometime in the near future. The game 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 e5 (i am a dragon player and i just studied this tricky line because it is pretty forcing until i come up with something better) 4.0-0 Bd6 5.c3 a6 6.Bc4 Nf6 7.d4 cxd4 8. cxd4 exe4 9.e5 Bxe5 10. Nxe5 Nxe5 11. Re1 0-0 12.Rxe5 Qc7 13.Qxd4 e5!! (here my prep ended and this move nocked the socks of Johan haha, i was really proud because i get to equalize but i emmidiatly blundered with 14.Nc3 dxc4?!? 15 Rb5 with a great attack so i need to defend intead if i would have taken with the queen it was equal and dry endgame.)

Question regarding the non GMs in the audience. Danya, you will often say white equalizes or black equalizes easily, but how easy is it for lower rated, non-title players. While at your level everyone knows 20 moves of theory, how practical is it for sub-master level players? Are a lot of these positions still quite effective in our games as it requires tremendous theoretical knowledge and/or finding only moves to equilabrate the position? Thanks again for being the internet's best chess teacher!!
@travisnobleart
@travisnobleart 11 ай бұрын
If you're playing online blitz, rapid and you study the win loss within ratings under 2000 and compare the moves under those against engine recommended, you will discover there are more potent "losing" positions than some of the equal positions. You can make a lot of discoveries this way and play the odds against your pool if you like, using your own assessment if the saving moves are so computerish that the likelihood of someone finding it is next to zero. I have even found a position that the engine gives -6.4 that had incredible winning odds, and I'm sure there are many more like it. Not helpful for OTB but if you're looking to improve your fast online play, I think this might be a good approach.

After f4 at 18:35, why would Ne7 not work? If the queen goes h7 or f7 youd just move the king accordingly and then attack the queen with the rook, which is protected by the queen and bishop. (Edit:) I've been thinking about it. And it obviously would only work with Qf7. And if they went Qh7 you move the king, then have to figure something else out. But I feel like going Ne7 would still be one of your better moves as black when white pushes the f pawn. I'm still learning but that's what I would have played. Can someone explain to me if that would work?
@owenallenaz
@owenallenaz Жыл бұрын
If you go Ne7, Qh7+. King has one move, Kf8. Next white goes f5. The rook can't move because the king blocks. The queen can't move because the knight blocks. Now your bishop is attacked a pawn. If you don't take, its Qg7#. If you do take, he takes back with his pawn and now still threatens mate. Your only play is sacing the queen. Now your down a queen and a bishop. Its over.

Framing it as "taking moves from chat" is pretty disingenuous, in my opinion. Chat names moves because it is supposed to be an interactive learning experience, much like a classroom where students are expected to consciously participate. Chat will never in a million years suggest a move that is completely outside Danya's comprehension. If that were the case, he would catch on and realise it's a ridiculous computer move, or point out how it's an obvious blunder. Thinking Danya's going to get tricked into making an unthinkable computer move because some nobody in chat posted it is a bit presumptuous given that Danya is lifetimes ahead of most of us in both chess elo, experience and intuition.

Not that I don't expect players within this rating range, who are much higher rated than me, to crumble somewhat early, but I for the life of me cannot understand this knee-jerk style of playing instantly. Fair enough if you know the opening, but they were in the middle game for crying out loud. Do you really have to blitz out moves in a rapid game? It's really frustrating, because Danya's opponents are clearly worth their salt, but they throw all their skill down the gutter by resolving themselves to only start thinking when they're down material due to a silly mistake any 1200 would have picked up. Still a great and instructive game and at least the post-game analysis is usually longer to compensate.

I noticed that too, this rating range is like the wild west, at 1150 I once beat a 1700, regularely some 1400+s, at 1500 I lost bitterly to a 1200, some 1300 are crazy strong, some hang a piece at move 10, but suddenly 2000s are a completely different beast, they feel unbreakable, never hang anything, just squeeze you to death, its funny to say the least.

I think somewhere around 1700 you start to often meet people with huge theoretical knowledge. It is almost impossible to win a game without knowing a lot of theory from here. It is like playing against GM first 10-15 moves even if your opponent has rating 1600-1800.
