ARTC , the track owners, have a defect detector at Heathfield, just down the hill from Mt Lofty. I have filmed several trains at this spot , but never on the same side as the detector, and always miss the door on the camera open and close! This time , the sun is on the Eastern side , so I get a chance to show you the camera opening and closing after a train. We get to see a Pacific National Intermodal pass the camera and another one through the platform at Mt Lofty.

Interesting video, especially with the cameras with the defect detectors. Love the opening shots of the trees. It's hot here in Nebraska, and dry, but mother nature is planning to drop some rain here. Who watches the video from the defect detectors? The dispatch? Love the video, cheers from Terry in Nebraska, how's the construction going on the new place?

Thanks Terry! Any defects are sent to the dispatcher/ control, I don't know if the crew get live notifications? Getting cool here in Brisbane, but proper cold down in Mt Lofty! Still working on finding another builder, but no rush atm , as interest rates are making prices haywire! Cheers Gregg.

Real good video Buddy, do they ever use those other Tracks, they look real rusty on top of the rails?? Bob
@FishplateFilms
@FishplateFilms Жыл бұрын
Thank you Bob! The middle road is used for MOW equipment, and the occasional defective car. The right hand track is a passing loop, but as trains have gotten longer , they don't fit in it anymore , so a longer siding was built further East about 10 miles . There was talk of lengthening the siding here , but locals weren't happy , but I would be OK with it..LOL Cheers Gregg 🙂

Cool shot of the detector! The vast majority of defect detectors here in America don't have cameras. Do your guys' detectors transmit a report to the crew via radio? I'd love to hear a recording of one if they do. I've also noticed that a lot of Aussie railfans don't carry radio scanners. Any particular reason why? Great video as always, Gregg. Can't wait to see videos from the new abode in the hills!

Thank you Trav! I was going to set up my phone to get a view in side the box , but I ran out of time...maybe next visit in August? I don't work on this railway , so not sure how they work , but I'm making enquiries! Our radio channels are restricted to the public, so you can't hear them on normal scanners, but I have heard of some getting the rail frequencies , but it's a big no no down here! I'm always amazed by US railroads having their coms open to the public...but it's very cool! Cheers Gregg.

The detectors are overseen by the network controller (Dispatcher) who relays to the crew any irregularities.

Any thoughts on making height clearances higher for double stack.
@FishplateFilms
@FishplateFilms Жыл бұрын
Hi Art , there has been talk of it for a few years, but the bigger trains , which are now double stacked , get to Adelaide via Sydney and Broken Hill , and come in via the North. It may happen but not for a while I think? Thanks for watching Sir. Gregg.

hi gregg !!! hope all is well down-under !! just a quick note as i just watched your review of walthers mainline sd 70 ace and you were 100 percent correct !!! they pull really well as the chassis/motor/etc are really nice... the body detail is not the greatest but from 3 feet it does not matter, right ??? i have several cp/soo/cn[custom painted by tom poeschels'motown models] and they run fantastic... question, gregg... in that video you never said how many cars were behind the bnsf engine when she started slipping up the 1.8% grade... just wondering. please keep up the good videos... i am retired now and even after about 60 years in the hobby you still help me a lot !!! i will tilt an ice cold fosters for you in about 15 minutes !!! NO KIDDING... ICE COLD !!! thanks again, gregg my friend !!! denny

Hi Dennis, thanks for watching the video! I think it was about 12 -14 cars? They are well built locos, but I must say the new Genesis units are well put together as well . Hope you enjoyed your Fosters...I don't drink beer but cheers anyway! Cheers Gregg.

What kind of defects does the device detect? Does it detect defects on passing locomotives and rolling stock or does it detect defects on the track or both? Cheers, Joe.

I'm still checking up on it Joe. So far I know it does wheel defects and listens to noise to pick up abnormalities. Thanks for watching! Gregg.
