I am studying in the US now and had dreams of being a pilot in the IAF in my younger days. Here in US citizens can enter the pilot training scheme as late as 35 years of age. But in India it is only 24 years. Many potential pilots from remote areas might not even know the proper pathway even by the age of 24 and hence miss out. This scenario needs to change.

Medical standards are very vague and based on luck which is very unfair, have experienced this personally, lot of candidates who have issues like sweaty palms, flat feet, knock knees are cleared without giving much look, but if someone has been cleared by doctor the Air HQ returns them based on medical guidelines. Yes. I agree that IAF can be joined through various entries like NDA, CDS, NCC special entry and AFCAT. But the point is that they must increase the number of seats for males and females in each entry, also there are very limited seats for nda entry that too especially for girls(why only 2 seats for girls yaar!!??). They are not giving opportunities to the ones who want to join by not increasing the number of seats, that's why even if someone who passionately wants to become a pilots, their opportunities to join are being supressed!! So as a defence aspirant I want to tell IAF to increase the number of seats for the candidates!!

that's the issue I've personally met 100s of students who are very passionate about becoming an Air Force Pilot, but the low seats Distract them, and they usually get attracted towards various Cadet Programs of India's leading commercial airlines which i think is becoming a hindrance.

Point is valid but think about it. Pilots those are taking early retirement were also very passionate about becoming a pilot once. Everyone who joins the forces has passion in them, still lots of them take early retirement. Plus better opportunity provided by corporate lures them in. The seats are less, that's true. But there can be a reason for that.

Now i am a commercial pilot , I always wanted to be airforce pilot I cleared my afcat and I was totally fit to be a pilot since I did not have any medical problem and I was also a professional athelete for a long time , I just couldn't make it because I didn't get flying branch because I was 7 days older than the required age and countries like USA you can become a fighter pilot even at the age of 35. I was not even aware of the requirement of airforce till I started preparing for it , this is a unnecessarily requirement age group should be extended, these unnecessary rules is destroying people's dream and also creating shortage for airforce , I am 28 now and I am still ready to join IAF is they ever change the age requirement.

because Many aspiring pilots have near-perfect eyesight with corrective lenses, yet current regulations disqualify them from the fighter stream. To address this, the IAF should consider updating its medical circular to allow candidates who have undergone approved corrective eye surgeries, similar to policies in other advanced air forces. This change could expand the talent pool while maintaining high visual standards essential for fighter operations.

Buddy its not possible to raise that upper limit by 29, because once we reach that age, its very difficult to change the personality as per defence requirements, trainability factor decreases with age, Its easy for a 21-23 year old youngster to adapt military environment than a 28-29 year old man

I was recd thru cds 1 2023, but was declared medically unfit due to lstv(2a). This type of anomaly is very common, and iaf is simply rejecting candidates left and right. Plus, most of the cadets get grounded in stg1 or 2. This causes a huge shortage of pilots. To address this, they've started recommending more ppl. In my time total 170 ish men used to get recommended thru afcat, this intake had 404 men. Those talking abt lowering the standards of ssb, pls go to academy once(afa, to be specific), and see what kinda officers our nation is getting, the standards of ssb are already very low. Majority of the folks going there are very degraded humans.

These shortage will remain as long as you dont fix the medical standards. I got medically rejected after apparently a "new findings". I got myself tested outside and everything came out normal. I applied for rmb and it got rejected despite sending proofs. Outrageous.

Agreed, there is a shortage of fighter pilots in IAF. Indian Air force conducts a rigorous selection process which is highly based on Aptitude, Physical fitness and Medical test. India holds the privilege of training the best fighter pilots in the world. CPSS: Computerized Pilot Selection System of IAF is very tough and those who fail to qualify this test via AFSB Will be restricted for entire life to become fighter pilot. Every indian citizen has only one chance in entire life to become Fighter pilots. Earlier CPSS was known as PABT or else known as "Pilot Aptitude Battery Test". Remember the best of the best also gets rejected in fighter pilot selection.

Short service commission pilots after 14 years must be given choice to work till 20 yrs and given a pension . The SS pilots must be used as professional pilots with no long breaks like staff college or other defense courses except combat flying in fighters and upgradation courses for Transport flying and helicopter flying . Those leaving after 20 yrs must be made compliant with commercial flying with 250 hrs on 4 engined or other aircraft’s to enable easy entry into airlines with ALTP .

In times of war, a fighter pilot is worth his weight in gold. Short Service Commission Pilots should also get a lifelong pension. That way intake will be more, And secondly pls cut down on freebies like free ration, Divert that money to buy new Jets to bring the squadron strength to 42 Nos.
