MAHAJANPAD PERIOD (600-323BC):- **Map pointing of 16 MAHAJANPADs - Angottai Nikaya Buddhist literature mentions in detail about the 16 Mahajanpads. North ---> 1. Gandhar(Afghanistan) - Taxila 2. Kamboj(Punjab & Kashmir) - Rajpur 3. Kuru(Punjab & Haryana) - Indraprastha 4. Matsya(East Rajasthan) - Viratnagar 5. Shursen(Agra & Mathura) - Mathura 6. Chedi(Bundelkhand) - Shaktimati 7. Avanti(Western MP) - Ujjain and Maheshmati 8. Ashmak(North Maharashtra) - Patali ---> South West ----> 1. Panchal (West UP) - Kapilya & Ahichhatra 2. Kaushal(Central UP) - Saket 3. Vats(Prayagraj) - Kaushambi 4. Kashi(Banaras) - Kashi 5. Magadh(Bihar & Jharkhand) - Rajgriha & Pataliputra 6. Anga(Eastern Bihar & Bengal) - Champa 7. Vrijji( North Bihar) - Vaishali 8. Malla (Gorakhpur) - Kushinagar - Vrijji, Malla, Panchal, Kamboj were republic. Causes of the rise of Magadh:- 1. Geographical factor: Ample rainfall, perennial river, fertile land, deposits of mineral 2. Economical factor: Large population and higher revenue, surplus agricultural production 3. Social & religious factor: Magadh had a relatively unorthodox society due to buddhism/ Jainism 4. Political factor: Rulers of Magadh were aggressive and ambitious 5. Military factor: Magadh had a very large army, it also developed some creative weapons to check and mate the enemy(Rathmuslak-Sythic chariot, Mahashilakantak - Stone catapult, War elephant) • Haryank Dynasty:- - The 1st known ruler of this dynasty was Bimbisara. He strengthened himself by making 3 matrimonial alliances:- (a) Chalana of Vrijji (b) Kaushal Devi of Kaushal (c) Khema of Madradesh After which he gained power and prestige, thus expanding Magadh by conquering Ang Mahajanpad. - Ajashatru was the son of Bimbisara. He had killed his father and occupied the throne. He was also called as Kunik. Bimbisara named him Ashokchandra. He had two brothers. His greatest success was defeat of Vrijji kingdom and included it in the Magadh empire and it took 16 years for him to do so. He also used deceit and proxy war with the help of his ministers Sunidha and Vatskar. - Udayin was the successor of Ajatshatru who shifted the capital Rajgriha to Pataliputra. • Shishunag Dynasty:- - Last ruler of Haryank Dynasty named Nagdashak was killed by his minister Shishunag. - The greatest success of Shishunag was conquest of Avanti Mahajanpad. - The successor of Shishunag, Kalashoka was a weak ruler and was killed by his commander, Mahapadmanand. •Nand Empire:- - Established by Mahapadmanand. - His greatest success was to conquer all the remaining Mahajanpads except Gandhar and Kamboj. He had 3 titles: Ekrat(Sole Monarch) Sarvakshatrahantak (Uprooter of Kshatriya Rule), Ugrasen (owner of large and regular army) • Foreign Invasions in India:- 1. First invasion: Persian invasion in 516 BC by Shah Darius I. This occupation remained for 150 years. For these many years, this area gave Persians the highest revenue. - 2nd Invasion: Alexander in 326 BC(battle of Hydaspas) He was born in Masedonia, the teacher was Aristotle, father was philip. (a) Battle of Arbella 332 BC modern day Iraq between Alexander and Darius III resulted in Alexander's Victory and his conquest of the Persian empire. Shah of Persia, Pharrow of Egypt. (b) Battle of Hydaspas 326BC:- - between Alexander and Kong Porus, when he refused to surrender. - Fought on the banks of River Ravi. - Porus used war elephants. - Resulted in a very hard fought battle somehow won by Alexander. Causes of Retreat of Macedonian Army from India:- 1. The greeks feared a massive Magadh army. 2. The greek soldiers were away from home for 10 years. 3. Most of the greek soldiers were wounded and tired. So the greek army returned from its last camp on the bank of river Beas in India to Macedonia. However, Alexander died on the way in Babylonia(Bagdad, Iraq)

It's not necessary to add these text in history books. Peace✊
