Everyone talks about the reliability (or lack) of air suspension. 45 years ago I worked on a very large hydro electric power project. Pretty much all of the off-road/rough road heavy earthmoving machinery had air suspension. Air suspension on off road vehicles has very well proven reliability. Then there is the question of wheel travel when at maximum height. Land Rover's off road system helps get around the lack of wheel travel, while the raised height lessons the chance of sill damage etc. But because the suspension can be lowered when back on normal roads, there is none of the instability of conventional 4WD's with raised suspensions. And lets be honest, even most Wranglers etc spend more time on the road than off.

Had a 2019 Discovery 5 new fully loaded on a 3yr lease. Loved it. Best road trip vehicle I ever owned. Had every confidence in it no matter the conditions. And no, I had no problems with it either. Everything worked, all the time. I left the brand because I wanted it go EV, but if they release an EV version of the next Discovery I'll go back. The Defender came out after we got our Discovery but to be honest the cargo space in the Defender was lacking vs the Discovery (and we put some huge items in the Discovery so it mattered) and when specced similarly the Defender just didn't feel a upscale as the Discovery which felt like 95% of a Range Rover for 65% of the price. The Defender does look more cool I agree. That said, I'm one of the people who likes the look of the Discovery 5 from 90% of angles, (yes even the offset license plate) but I don't like them with black rims and roofs, it just doesn't suit the shape and makes it look awkward. And if you hate the kick up on the back next to the license plate that they keep pointing out (which was even worse on the D3 and D4 imho) then make sure not to get the black infill panel there as it only highlights theat design even more whereas on a white one without infill you barely notice it.

We have a Discovery 5 and love it, it might not not be a rock crawler, but during a recent winter storm, we were safely able to drive from Lubbock to FT. Sumner New Mexico, on ice covered roads. We saw other vehicles struggling and slipping but the Discovery maintained traction the entire time. They closed the roads for safety concerns and we were forced to stop.

I've not heard people say the Defender is basically a Discovery. What they have said is the Defender realistically IS the Discovery 4 replacement we should have got. It's of a similar size and shape, it has the swing open tailgate etc. Also, the tailgate opening to the right isn't an issue in the UK where we drive on the left and therefore when we open it, it's open to allow us to get to the footpath.

I had a 2000 Disco SE7. Loved that truck. So capable off road, unstoppable in the snow, and very comfortable. Had ACE, and downhill descent mode. However it had a slew of problems before 63,000 miles: Engine block cracked, radiator needed replacing, ACE airbag failed, heated seat element failed burning hole in seat, third seat needed replacing as it could not be put up, Sunroof leaked and needed replacing, heated windshield element failed right in front of steering wheel and best mileage ever was around 16mpg. Service was followed as indicated in the manual. Had to trade it in.

Their product is excellent Reliability issues are way way down and customer satisfaction levels are way up Every manufacturer has teething issues with an all new vehicle Defender did not have any serious issues in its first 12 months LR have since sorted out the minor issues With regards to TFL IMO they were very stupid to take a car off showroom floor and up to high altitude Drive it for a few days at the normal elevation and let the vehicle settle in. TFL absolutely milked the Defender issues in a very OTT way, which gets them KZbin views, and $$$ The wiring harness issue with their second Defender just added more ammunition for them to be OTT and get more KZbin views And everyone just unfairly jumped on the band wagon and gave Defender and LR unfair criticism about reliability

I absolutely loved that Disco. From the positioning of the window controls, the awesome defrosting windshield, the killer sound system, downhill descent control, ACE and just the fact that it rode so well, and was unstoppable in acclimate weather. It was Kent Green, with brown leather interior. I got it used, and it had an extended warranty. Picked it up with around 23k miles. Drove it for years up to around the 65K mark. Three days after the extended warranty coverage expired, I had it in for an oil and filter service and asked them to look at the oil leak. That is when they told me about the Radiator blockage, and the cracked engine head. Even though I had mentioned an oil leak on a prior visit, they would not cut me a break. Said they had no records of any oil leak… To repair the Radiator and rebuild or replace the engine would have been around $12K. It may have been the dealer not being stand up, but that was more than I could take. I still see some of those Disco years on the road, and I kid you not…I still have a soft part in my heart for those.

As per LR own public statements The Defender is the replacement of the D3 and D4. More utilitarian and boxy and rugged vehicle. The most off road capability that LR offer. LR purposely pushed the Disco 5 into a much more upmarket direction Disco 5 is meant to compete against BMW X5 / X7 Benz GLE / GLS Audi Q7 Etc Disco has more room in Row 3 v the Defender 110. But a Defender 130 is not far away, and this will have a lot of room in Row 3. When u get a Defender with Row 3 seats, there is much less under rear floor storage compared to a 5 seat Defender. Both vehicles weigh well over 2 tonne, unladen, and they are not particularly aerodynamic, so of course they won’t be hugely economical vehicles, particularly above 70 mph. They r both fantastic vehicles. Buy the one that best suits your particular automotive requirements

@@crazygooseventures But they did So get over it The new Defender is the perfect 21st century replacement of the previous generation Defender. And it also took over from D3 and D4
@crazygooseventures
@crazygooseventures 2 жыл бұрын
The new “Defender” is an over complicated vehicle. 85 ECU’s doesn’t bode well for an “off-road” vehicle. A 4WD system that primarily interfaces through the info centre is not practical nor reliable, design flaws carried forward from the original Defender that weren’t necessary, a winch setup that requires a 40 hour install, an air suspension that has numerous fault points so troubleshooting is difficult and in some cases not trail reliable but yes it’s the perfect replacement of the previous Defender according to McGovern. After 20+ years of LR ownership, I see some things still haven’t changed which is the disappointing part of JLR’s approach to this redesign. All JLR had to do was keep things simple with the new Defender and they would have been fairly successful as that’s what the market wanted but instead they took complexity to a whole new level. They should have taken notes when Ford redesigned the Bronco (and I’m not a Ford fan - they just did a much better job of understanding what the vehicle’s niche was). There’s very little resemblance this vehicle has to its predecessor to carry that badge. And don’t get me wrong, when JLR products work, they are phenomenal to drive, but they’re a company that forgot its roots.
@crazygooseventures
@crazygooseventures 2 жыл бұрын
Also, if JLR admits that the new Defender is the replacement of the D3/4, then they really didn’t understand the Defender’s market or this models role in their family lineup. That statement doesn’t even make sense from a “Defender” badge perspective. That means they didn’t design a Defender replacement.

@@crazygooseventures The previous generation Defender had no safety, no comfort, no tech, no airbags, it was not a comfortable daily driver, and was only able to be sold in a few countries around the world, and it was not selling in big numbers. New Defender has comfort, safety, tech, it’s a great daily driver, and fantastic off road ability. Many options and accessories etc, plus mods are readily available to create the Defender that suits you and your requirements. U can buy basic versions of Defender that have less gizmos, steel wheels and no air suspension etc It’s a hugely popular worldwide seller. Over 30,000 on worldwide back order. I’m sure LR would be very happy with it. They made the right decision by building a vehicle that appeals to the masses. The Bronco has a limited market. Ford have a lot more resources then JLR. LR have high standards, regarding towing and off road use ability. A basic Defender that would have only appealed to the off road community, would have had an RRP that was expensive for the masses. The limited sales appeal of the vehicle, did not make this scenario a financially viable option for LR to pursue.

Really wanted to order a brand new Defender, however you can't really get them based on chip shortages and such. Coming from an LR4, I love the boxy styling... BUT I started really researching the Discovery 5 and ended up with a 2018 TD6 HSE Lux. Love the engine, love the car. Changed out the wheels to 20" vs. 21" with Duratracs, have the rear locker, and it's pretty much unstoppable. When I need extra clearance, I have Proud Rhino lift rods to put in and I can crawl the same trail they show in Moab without scraping. Long highway, towing, offroad, the diesel rocks. All in all, I'm super happy with my Disco5 and didn't think I was going to be!

Love LR - my past two vehicles were LR. My RR Velar R-Dynamic SE P380 was so much fun, but not so much for rear passengers (space a little tight). And I would never have taken it off-road. But I loved actually seeing the air suspension do its thing. I do wish that LR had given the Velar of my year an open-exhaust option as I think that would have made the 3.0l Supercharged V6 bark rightly. For some of the reasons you mentioned, I needed to bid adieu to my Velar as it was going out of warranty. I really wanted to just go with a more recent model, but **no** LRs - used or new - were available at my dealer in 11/21. So I went with a Mercedes GLE53 - pluses and minuses as one would expect. No perfect trade-offs. Quick question to folks: when people ask me the difference between "Land Rover" and "Range Rover," I respond that generally the Land Rovers (i.e., badged with their models) are more of the "U" in SUV, while the RRs are more the "S" in said abbreviation. Thoughts?

'R-Dynamic' "S" ist the BOTTOM LINE version (WITH sport/bling bling trim). 'R-Dynamic' "HSE" would be the top line version (also with sport/bling bling trim). The versions without sport/bling bling trim ('R-Dynamic') are just called "S/SE/HSE" (and prior MY21 "HSE Luxury") - in that order. So you are comparing the bottom line version of the Disco ("S") with the bling bling trim to the advanced version of the Defender ("SE"). That's the reason for the weird pricing. Also, the 'R-Dynamic' trim basically makes the Disco a 'on-road only' SUV, since the trim alters the ground clearance AND all the angles drastically. (Not to mention it comes with bigger rims and thus less rubber on them.) It would have been better to compare the Defender to the Discovery without the 'R-Dynamic' trim.

Great vid. I've been looking at Defenders but this clip kinda pushed me back to my current Discovery (3.0L 2019) and if I'm ever going to upgrade my car I'll probably go for the fresher version of the Discovery, although the ruggedness of the Defender does appeal to me very much. Cheers from Kyrgyzstan.

We had a new D5 top spec HSE Diesel and it was a mixed bag... Positives: Quiet on the motorway Reasonable economy when not towing Leather seats looked good Negatives: Doors too deep - the bottoms would catch when opening in ruts/rocks. Flimsy - interior trim came apart quickly. Bits fell off. Exterior - we lost undertrays/guards torn off on minor tracks. Electrical "quirks" - the dashboard didn't always work. Blank screen. You could drive and operate it but had no idea of fuel/speed. Electric tailgate - would flatten battery. Happened twice. Recovery. Cruise - wouldn't hold a steady speed. Towing - throttle mapping was inconsistent which made low speed maneuvering with horse trailers not smooth as it should be. Ad-Blue - it had a serious drinking problem. Reverse tardis - felt big/awkward to place on tight lanes/trails yet lacked interior space. Land Cruiser is physically bigger but the opposite: it's more spacious on the inside but easy to place on trails. Boot/trunk space: surprisingly small, Deerhounds hated it. Alarm: unnecessary multi-step process for disabling the interior sensor (dogs) when popping into a store. Other brands use a button, works better. Overall: mixed. Lovely shiny "country car" for "city" people. Wasn't ideal for our use case. Just not practical or durable enough. Wouldn't trust running one long term. It was a relief to get rid of it after 3 months.

As a fan of the Land Rover Discovery since the Disco 1s (and owner of a few Disco 1s over the years), I really feel LR lost the plot with the Disco 5. It's just lost all it's ruggedness and become a baby Range Rover. The LR3 and LR4 were pretty true to the Discovery name, but the current one just feels completely different.

The Defender's rear cargo bay area is really tiny for an SUV. Put a typical 45 litre camping fridge in there and half the storage area is consumed. And hence not many are configured for 7 seats, as there simply isn't enough space in there - the upside is a great departure angle due to the very short rear overhang. Another great benefit of a short rear over hang is that the tow bar is much closer to the rear axle, so towing a heavy travel trailer (aka caravan for Australians), it would be tremendously stable. Re the second row seats on the Defender, a real negative is that the seat backs cannot be reclined. They are a fixed position only, so this makes travelling in the 2nd row less comfortable in the Defender.

@@grabir01 I don't doubt there are reliability issues with the older model. And newer ones are also extremely complicate electronically and do fail once in a while.
