As a former Malaysian, it was interesting to hear the Filipino perspective. Not many Malaysians have been exposed to the Filipino and Sulu perspectives. The trouble boils down to conflicting translations of the 1878 deed agreement between the Sultanate of Sulu and the British North Borneo Company. Need for dialogue between both sides. Perhaps international mediation and a referendum. Rights of Filipino migrants in Sabah also need to be respected. Perhaps a pathway to residency and citizenship?
@antondelacruz9362

Its been years since i read about this issue but iirc: As explained by prof carlos, the documents favor the philippine claim, which is why Malaysia has no interest in confronting the issue in an international court. It makes no sense that malaysia still continues to pay money to the heirs of the original filipino owners, unless it is actually rent money rather than a purchase. Sabah was given to malaysia when the colonizers left, even though they technically had no authority to do so. The philippines is the country which wanted dialogue while malaysia never did. The predecessor of asean never got off the ground because malaysia refused to join the body if it included the philippines. Iirc, forming asean included the caveat of the philippines not bringing up the sabah issue. Hence there are multiple reasons that the philippines claim is stronger, and why malaysia will never discuss the legitimacy of its claim in any significant depth.

God bless Teodoro Locsin who has the courage, guts, the balls to declare and to claim Sabah openly as belonging to the Philippines, not Malaysia which repatriated a large number of Muslims even during this covid-19 pandemic. They were all taken care of and nourished back to health by Zamboanga City before returning to Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi. It's really best If Malaysia contends with our Nation as a whole and not just with a small number of claimants. That country has not respected the Sultanate, and has only used our people for their own benefit. God bless the Philippines!

IMO the UN referendum supersedes all historical claims by the Sultanate of Sulu. This situation reminds me of Saddam Hussein, who invades Kuwait on the basis of an ancient document showing it as a province of Iraq. However, the vast majority of Kuwaitis oppose the annexation of their tiny nation to Iraq. And with US military help, Hussein’s forces get kicked out of Kuwait. To permanently resolve the Sabah issue, I suppose another referendum can be held, which I believe will yield the same result

Actually all old agreements are void automatically after a referendum was conducted in Sabah in 1963 and the result of the Cobbold Commission was accepted by the UN. The voice of Sabahans must be respected by all parties. Do u know China is using 500-year old map during the Ming Dynasty to claim that Spratly Islands are theirs? Do you accept 400 or 500 years old archives are relevant to today's world? The Sulu Sultan is pestering on an old story to make claim on Sabah is ridiculous and unsound.

The Sulu Sultan was making claim that Sabah is their territory based on an agreement signed between the Sulu Sultan and Baron de Overbeck. Making claim without direct control on the land is like u claim the moon is yours. Also, there was no written document to prove the Brunei Sultan ceded Sabah to Sulu Sultan. They can't force Israel to give up Palestine or China to give up Tibet. So do you still think they can force Malaysia? Do you think the US will help us? @@eelchiong6709 and the Sultanate is willing to sacrifice their lives for Sabah. They have already proven it in 2013. Now, the Philippine government is going to back up the sultanate of Sulu, otherwise, the Filipino people will lose confidence in their own government. Do you think the Sultanate, which is much much older than the Federation of Malaysia, and after decades of fighting for their ancestral land, will back down now? I don't think so... and yes, I agree that might is right in Realpolitik. In terms of legalities, the Sultanate already won. This win is recognized by the international community. Now, if you are talking about an armed conflict between the Philippines and Malaysia, do you think Malaysia will win? What makes you think so? 🤔 Personally, I don't care about Sabah being part of the Philippine Republic. BUT, if the Sultanate of Sulu, if the Tausug people think that Sabah is their rightful territory, I will support them. This is because, despite the Philippine government being unsupportive of the Sabah claim (because they're afraid to ruffle Malaysia's feathers) the Sultanate continued to fight for generations, spending their own resources, appealing to international bodies for assistance, and these efforts, I say, are very commendable and heroic. This is the only reason I am one with the Tausug people.

But WE HAVE TO BRING THEM TO SABAH 1st. Do you honestly think our Navy & Air force can protect our soldiers being ferried over to Sabah? All they have to do is sink our troop carriers and its all over. Lastly, the people of Sabah, will they help us? Sulu finally lost in various courts of appeal. Sulu lost in Paris Court of Appeal, which annulled and set aside the Paris Court ruling and failed to get the US$14.92B compensation. Instead, Sulu has to pay Malaysia €100,000 as legal cost imposed by the Paris Court of Appeal. Sulu also lost in courts in The Haque, Netherlands in their bid to enforce the Paris Court ruling and failed in their attempt to seize Malaysian assets, following the Paris Court of Appeal decision. Sulu's claim case in Luxembourg would face the same fate following the Paris Court of Appeal decision.

@Hope Lope i always thought ying East india trading company yung nag lease, tpos ibinenta or pinapa lease rin nila sa Malaysia. After world war II, dami nanag claim and since America yung supreme victor sa World War II, they recognized that the British is the sole owner of Sabah. After Workd War II, is the best time to claim territory and recognize sovereignity tpos paperworks lng kulang. Also may partly mali yung sultanate of Sulu, Since kinilala sila part sa Pinas, nag pay tribute lng sana sa govt. In the end, uts like gangwar. I do hope that, hindi mag defect yung Sulu sa Malaysia with the help of BANGsamoro law

To be on the safe side, since Sabah was also claimed by the Sultan of Sulu, Baron Overbeck negotiated a treaty with the Sultan of Sulu. He signed an agreement with the Sultan of Sulu and agreed to pay him $5,000 annually. The Sultan appointed him as Dato Bendahara and Raja of Sandakan in 1878.

By history, Sabah or North Borneo was never been part of the Philippines. It was given to the Sultanate of Sulu as a sort of gratitude for helping the rebellion crushed that happened in the early years there. Not in any given time that Sabah was part of the Philippine Jurisdiction or Philippine Map. What was given to the Sultanate of Sulu, is not automatically the property of the Philippine government. Who is receiving the the money as they said as "RENTAL"? the Sultanate of Sulu/heirs or the Philippine government? Not a SINGLE PESO in any given time that the Philippine government received from the said "RENTAL" if it was indeed owned by the Philippine government. The existence of Sabah or North Borneo was even ahead than that the existence of the Philippine government.

it is a Philippine Territory, but it is an Autonomous region to be Administered by the Sultanate of Sulu and its rightful owners. To be honest Sabah could have been a Malaysian - Sulu partnership. However, the Natives of Sulu has always been a brother and a part of the Philippines. the claim over the territory has been clearly for the Philippines but the Philippines only acts like a father figure for the Sultanate. and recently, the issue is now clear and the Philippines will not turn a blind eye for the cry of its people and the natives of Sabah.

Well, in Malaysia version history. The sultan sulu have given sabah to the cobbold for FOREVER. Cobbold then give it to Malaysia BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THE PEOPLE OF SABAH WANTS TO. Now, forget about the lease. No lease is for FOREVER. Does not make sense. Easy, ask the people of Sabah, in which country they want to be in? If the people does not acknowledge you as sultan, you are not a worthy sultan after all. They are not their sultan in sabahan people heart ok.

How can this woman and supposedly a professor in UP not know much about this issue she can't even string the past presidents in chronological order. She is the prime example why not too many Filipinos knew about this issue. I am from the North Luzon and our teacher taught us about this issue yet PNoy in his speech was news to him. The truth was that Ninoy's supporter to come back to Pinas was Malaysia along with Japan. So the Liberal Party have to ignore this issue when in Power.
