@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Matter of perspective. In the Diablo universe, Lilith is the 'Mother' of the Nephalem race, the offspring of Angel and Demon, and the precursor to the Human race. During the previous conflict she was one the side of her offspring, but only because she believed they could end the War. The existence of the Nephalem was a threat to the balance that existed between Heaven and Hell, for they were as, or possibly more powerful than the two races that birthed them. Lilith wishes to end the Eternal War between Heaven and Hell at all costs, and the Nephalem were the tool by which she meant to do so. She cares for them only in so far as she needs them to accomplish her goal. The proof of this is already in the Trailer. She had to ritually sacrifice 3 Humans to return to their world. Didn't bat an eye.

@@killer114188t Except she is still a demon and as we see in the opening of the game now(now that the beta has shown us) That she is not above making her "children" do horrible acts like group-murdering a preacher for no good reason to her than "Do it, sin cuz sin is beautiful" The very reason Inarius ended up going from love to hate for her and imprisoned her in the first place(Before he too got caught my Mephisto) Both are now free, which side if the correct side? The Demon who wants us to be free to indulge in our sin and be the true rulers of creation through dark deeds. Or the Angel who wanted his kids to be weaker than we originally were cuz they scared him who now leads an overly zealous cult-like religious following. Then you have the Demons and Angels of the eternal conflict wanting us as well, Diablo and all the Demon lords are no longer trapped in the black souls stone and we will likely get to see the reincarnation of Maltheal into a new angel. The whole point is that the Diablo franchise is rife with sadness and horribleness no matter where you go or what people do. Even the Nephalem "hero: is missing for who knows why and might even become an antagonist in themself.

Horror is in part very much subjective. These guys can say they don't think it's horror och scary, but for someone else, it just might be. People say Diablo II was SO much more terror and horror than III but I don't think it was. The third had better graphics so that was of course a plus. And, trailers can NEVER compare to the actual gameplay. It's meant to inspire and give a theme and feeling for the game.

This is actually one of my favorite cinematic trailers because of how much it goes into the lore of the Diablo universe. The character we see descending from the flesh sheet at the very end is Lilith, she was the creator of the world of Sanctuary, where humans reside, along with the archangel Inarius. Heaven and Hell are currently in the midst of a cold war over Sanctuary, as humans in this universe are descended of angels and demons, so Lilith's return is no doubt going to shake up the political landscape of the conflict. (Also, fun fact about Lilith: the reason she's called "the daughter of hatred" is because her father is Mephisto, the demon lord of hatred)

Before humans(nephilims) were "born" there was a big war between demons and angels. Lilith was a demon that never wanted to partake in this war while on the other side Inarius (an angel) had the same ideas ...These 2 entities met and fell in "love" giving birth to nephilims(humans) sheltering them in Sanctuary. When both parties of the war learned what these 2 have done Lilith was casted down into the abyss while Inarius was given by the Angels to Hell for eternal torment. And the bald guy was the first Nephalem, their firstborn, that's why he called her blessed mother. Rathma, an immortal Necromancer. In Diablo lore Demon + Angel = Nephalem, after some time the bloodline got weaker, although some, on occasion, awaken their powers. But generally, they're called humans, those that have no special powers awakened. Those Nephalem were the previous heroes in Diablo 1-3. Also to note, the power of a Nephalem surpasses those of Angels and Demons. Giving the whole moral of the story: it's better to balance things out instead of going full evil/good. The Yin Yang philosophy. Oh and Sanctuary = Earth.
@Brainth_1780
@Brainth_1780 3 жыл бұрын
I have a theory that Lilith is not gonna be the bad guy in the game. The guy who volunteered himself, he was the key. Notice how Rathma says he _has_ to make it to the room, and emphasizes that he knows he came here for knowledge. After he _does_ give him the knowledge, the guy realizes something, looks at his (probably mortal) wound, then _decides_ to complete the summoning. *It had to be done willingly.* Given the history of the characters and in particular what we know of Rathma, I think he must have a good reason to bring Lilith back to Sanctuary, a reason good enough to make a scared, dying person do a 180 and summon what he considered a great evil.

That is exactly what most of the Diablo community disliked about it as the dark, gothic-like horror atmosphere got completely lost compared to the first two titles. Lilith as a Diablo character is kinda new to me; I missed out on it growing up, along with a lot of other cool stuff, but Christian parents, what are you gonna do? Now, Lilith as a piece of real-world mythology, that I know a bit about. Lilith as a mythical character predates ancient Babylon; she crops up in 'The Book of Adam and Eve', which borrowed elements of the creation myths of Sumeria and others. She also turns up in Tablet XII of the Babylonian retelling of the Gilgamesh epic. Then, she got added to certain Jewish and Zoroastrian mythologies around 500 CE... she gets about a bit 🙂 In the earlier myths, Lilith is either seen as a female proto-demon, a kind of consort who was possibly instrumental in leading the Archangel Sammael into sin; he got renamed Lucifer, and after Eden most folks know that story. The version that sticks more in my mind is this: Lilith was the first wife of Adam, made not from his rib but from the same clay that God had crafted Adam from. When told that she was to be subservient to Adam instead of treated as an equal, she rebelled and fled from Eden, refusing to return. While out in the wilds, she met the wandering Sammael. They had a fling, and the first nephilim (human/angel hybrid monsters, that Genesis notes as being part of the reason for the great flood) were born. Then Sammael, seeing how badly his consort had been treated, did the whole serpent/puppet deal with Adam and Eve, and Lilith sort of vanishes for a bit. She crops up in early translations of the Bible book of Isaiah, chapter 34 I think, which lists a 'lilith' or 'lilitu' as a spirit creature; it gets translated there as 'night hag' or 'screech owl', depending on which translation you read, and most Bibles actively omit the term in favour of the owl version. The Gilgamesh bit is fun, though, as this seems to have been a big influence on Lilith's addition to their wider mythologies. In the stories of 'Gilgamesh and Enkidu', a queen plans to make a new throne from a special tree that she plants. After ten years, she goes to harvest the wood, and finds a large serpent nesting in its roots, a bird has nested and had young in its branches, and a 'lilitu' has made a home in its trunk. Gilgamesh, wandering hero and king, slays the serpent. The bird and its young leave freely and leave for pastures new, and the lilitu is eventually scared enough to run away. The term that gets translated commonly into 'lilitu' in that passage is 'ki-sikil-lil-la-ke' (I hope I got that right; it's been a good while since I learned this!); the 'lil' means spirit, and 'lil-la-ke' means water spirit (and la-ke got stuffed into the modern english lexicon as lake, as you do!). So, Mother of Monsters, first rebel in the cause of feminism (and more power to her!), and or a bird-footed Babylonian she-spirit of undecided lineage... quite a set of options, but all very cool for a nerd like me. Hoping that wasn't too boring 😊

Even though it seems a tired horror convention that he'd go ahead and say the words, as a scholar he knows Lilith made and protected the world so he would know she might be the only one who can save it. It's a great act of service and self-sacrifice to bring her back and a tempting privilege for a scholar to finally turn his study of history into making history. He recognized in his final moment that when angels go rogue, the world needs a demon queen on its side. There was a lot of unspoken understanding between the hellraiser character and the scholar.

What I really like is the juxtaposition of titles if you don't know the deep lore. She is called both "Creator (of Sanctuary)" which sounds like a positive title of some protective deity and "Daughter of Hatred" which sounds like some edgy femme fatale heir to some evil power. And the scary bald guy seems to be summoning a demon, but says things like "call her home", meaning that she is apparently not from whatever hell they summon her from, but originally from wherever these guys are at. And in the end he says "Blessed Mother, save us" while while reverently holding the hand of imperious girl Satan. Not "destroy them oh Queen" or "take what is yours from your willing servant" or anything like that. No. The classical demon looking lady is apparently a creator mother goddess of some kind in his opinion, returned to make things right again. So much beautiful madness.

Lilith is the daughter of Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred and one of the Three Prime Evils (the other two being Diablo, Lord of Terror and Baal, Lord of Destruction). She became the lover of the archangel Inarius, and gave birth to the first Nephalem (half angel, half demon). In order to allow her children to live in peace she created the world of Sanctuary for them to live away from the constant warring of Heaven and Hell, and the offspring of the Nephalem themselves would become Humans. Thus Lilith is both the Creator of Sanctuary (the human world) and the daughter of one of the Prime Evils, so she also carries the moniker of the Daughter of Hatred. So she is both Benevolent and Malevolent.

There is a lot of speculation about if Lilith actually going to be a villain (minor spoler: the guy who summoned her is one of the greatest heroes and protectors of the world), or not. She is an interesting in-lore historical character to say the least, and her current standing on the scales of nominal good/evil in Diabloverse is an unknown value. Would be a fine recipe for a couple of nice twists... but Blizzard's story-writing went south long ago, unfortinately, so it's a rule to expect the most bland, obvious, cliched and dead-horse kind of plot moves. Still hope to be wrong.

@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames I'll explain, sorta. Heaven and hell has been at war forever and it is known as, "The Eternal Conflict." Lilith daughter of one of the three prime lords of hell caught an angel known as Inarius. Both of them grew tired of the Eternal Conflict, so they gathered followers and and stole a giant crystal called the world stone. They used the stone to create Sanctuary which is basically Earth and settled down. They bore children, a new race called the nephalem which have both demon and angel blood and power. Lilith saw them as the way to end the Eternal conflict. Others became scared of this as the children may bring the Eternal conflict to their doorstep. With debates of whether to genocide or spare them. Inarius disappeared to think but Lilith went into rage at the thought of her children being killed off and murdered both Angel and Demon followers. Inarius came back and defeated her but did not kill her. Instead he banished her to the void. Inarius tuned the world stone to weaken the Nephalem over time. Both Heaven and Hell eventually found out and few wars happened. Both Heaven and Hell agreed to keep away from Sanctuary(an obvious lie) but at the cost if Inarius, who is now being tortured by Liliths father Mephisto(the angel in chains in one of the flashbacks of the video is Inarius.) Now the Nephalem are weak humans, us. The world stone was destroyed recently so we are getting our powers back. We see Lilith as a good, hopefully. Especially seeing she wanted to protect us. Also ending the conflict is a great idea. It gas caused nothing but short of nightmares. Also that tall pale white guy with black eyes is Liliths and Inarius child Rathma.

The reason I imagine the guy said the words is because whether or not he does, he already took the steps to be a sacrifice... this was more or less the Pinhead guy's effort to "convert" him to the cause before the end... Its not just enough for the devil to kill you, the devil wants to corrupt your soul... and this guy sort of realized that his greed... the real greed he felt to learn and acquire this knowledge was its own proof of his corruption. "You came to the darkness for knowledge"... at least be rewarded with what you sought before you die. I think that's the logic that's used here. And that is one of the most ON POINT elements of the Diablo franchise as a whole... good people doing bad things that cause great calamity. You only need to look to Diablo 1 for an example of one bad apple spoiling the whole lot...

A little bit of backstory to it all In the beginning there was only 1 being called Anu who resided inside a pearl and he was everything he was good and evil, light and dark and everything in between. Anu expelled everything that he deemed dark and evil from himself in order to achieve perfection and purity, but everything he expelled came together and formed a 7 headed serpent called Tathamet who contrary to the Pure and Good Anu became the Prime Evil.The 2 beings waged war upon one another for supremecy with no winner in sight until they spent all their power and at the end of their battle they killed eachother and energy released from their death sparked the birth of the universe and all of creation From the body of Anu formed the Crystal Arch and around it the High Heaven and came forth beings of sound and light known as Angels and among the Angels were born Archangels each embodying an aspect Imperius Archangel of Valor Tyrael Archangel of Justice (later of Wisdom) Malthael Archangel of Wisdom (later of Death) Auriel Archangel of Hope Itherael Archangel of Fate Yaerius (unknown, speculated Archangel of Faith) Inarius (unknown, later traitor ,father of nephalem) From the body of Tathamet were formed the Burning Hells and came forth beings of darkness known as Demons and from its heads were born the 7 Evils each embodying an aspect Diablo Lord of Terror Baal Lord of Destruction Mephisto Lord of Hatred Andariel Maiden of Anguish Duriel Lord of Pain Belial Lord of Lies Azmodan Lord of Sin The 2 factions waged War against eachother which is known as the Eternal Conflict as had their creators before them, however Inarius and few angels as well as Lilith Daughter of Hatred (daughter of Mephisto) and few demons saw the futilty of the war and wanted no part of it anymore so they stole an artifact of immesurable power called "The World Stone" that could distort reality and created a secret world which they called "Sanctuary".On this world Angles and Demons mated and gave birth to the Nephalem, beings of which surpassed both angel and demons in power. Inarius saw them as a threat and wanted to murder them all, while Lilith saw them as a weapon to finaly end the Eternal Conflict.Desperate to protect the Nephalem from eradication Lilith murdered nearly all renegade angels and demons on sanctuary for this Inarius banishes Lilith to the void and weakens the Nephalem with the the World Stone.Eventually the Hells and Heavens find Sanctuary and want to eradicate everything there Lilith manages to return restores some of the power to the Nephalem and attempts to manipulate them but fails a really big war breakes between Heaven vs Hell vs Nephalem but the Nephalem decide to fuck all and a really powerful Nephalem sacrifices himself and manages to push out the Hells and Heavens out of Sanctuary Lilith gets banished to the Void again during this War. Inarius is captured and given to Mephisto for screwing his daughter and gets flayed and tortured to this moment. Heaven and Hell come to an accord to not fuck with the Nephalem until they decide which side they want to join but demons are dicks and try to fuck with the Nephalem anyway and the D1, D2, D3 and eventually D4 game happens.

In this game universe, Lillith is a demon that was responsible (along with the arch-angel Inarius) for creating the world and giving birth to Humanity. Before the creation of the world of Sanctuary, angels and demons had been at war in an eternal struggle. Whenever an angel or a demon would fall in battle, they would just be re-created in Heaven or Hell and then sent back into battle again. Inarius began to lose the will to continue, he got captured and tortured by Lillith, but convinced her, between his screams of pain, that the conflict was tedious and futile. Together, they stole an artifact known as the worldstone from the Heavens, and they used it to create an alternate dimension with a planet that they decided to call Sanctuary. This world would act as neutral ground where both angels and demons could go for respite. For a place to take a break from the conflict. However, as more angels and demons began to come to sanctuary, some of them began to fall in love during their "vacation". And some of these unions resulted in offspring, that were later dubbed, Nephilim. The Nephilim processed all the strengths of their parents, but very few of their vulnerabilities and it quickly became apparent that the Nephilim had the potential to shift the tide of the Conflict that was going on outside of Sanctuary. The demons wanted to control the Nephilim, to use them as weapons in the struggle. Lillith ended up getting banished to the Void, a realm outside of Sanctuary or the Heavens/Hells because of this. (In the trailer we watched, Lillith gets called back to Sanctuary from the Void because of the ritual of the willing.) In the end, to avoid having the Nephilim used against them, and because there is no justice in just killing off all the Nephilim, the angels used the worldstone artifact to drain away the strength of the Nephilim, turning them into the first humans, and altered the worldstone to limit access to Sanctuary by the forces of Heaven and Hell. It was no longer their neutral ground.

I don't think I've seen many people mention it, but I don't think the priest/scholar had a choice in saying the words. As freaked out as he was, shortly after looking into the black eyes of the other person, he was instantly calm. I think he had some sort of influence on him to basically make him do it. You saw how horrified he was once he read "Daughter of..." the first time in the room and then proceeded to refuse to say any more words, indicating it was a "summoning ritual." I'm sure he was well aware at that point that summoning rituals in this kind of world generally require sacrifices and that there was likely no chance he would survive. This is my all-time favorite trailer, at the moment. It just is so good. As a longtime fan of the franchise, all the way from ~24 years ago with the first game, this definitely got me excited.

Ok time to give you alot of context. There are 3 prime evils. Mephisto Lord of Hatred, Baal lord of Destruction and Diablo Lord Of Terror. So in this trailer you hear Daughter of Hatred. Lilith is Mephistos daughter. The whole deal is in the eternal war of Heaven vs Hell, Lilith and the Angel Inaris got sick of it and created a world called Sanctuary and with their followers (other angels and demons) started breeding (which was not allowed) and from it came the Nephilium which would later dilute into Humanity so before judging Lilith as bad, she did create our world and we'll "Blessed Mother" indeed. She might very well be our salvation. She was imprisoned in the void and Inarius the angel despite betraying Lilith cause alot of Angels in the Diablo franchise are assholes, Inarius is imprisoned somewhere, his in the trailer if you pause it you see a hooded figure in chains. Alot of fans give Diablo 3 alot of shit but lore wise it carried itself especially in its Reaper Of Souls dlc.

Thanks for the quick rundown! That was a well written and concise summary for a lot of what’s happening here. Others have said Lilith could be here to save us. Others said she is just using humanity as a means to an end and doesn’t ultimately care what happens to humanity in process (hence the sacrifice element). It’s a cool story. We played Diablo 3 I believe but since this is one of the few couch coops left we will most likely dive into 4 as well 😊

It looks like you probably played Diablo II. Diablo III's trailer and the trailer for its expansion are really good too. In Diablo III, it talks about Lilith. If you want her lore, here is the synopsis: Lilith's father Mephisto and her uncles (Baal and Diablo) fought against the Angels for many centuries. She got tired of the endless war and wanted out. She came across an Angel who was wounded in battle and he spat about not wanting to keep this on going war. She nursed him back to health and questioned him about his beliefs. Finding out that this Angel (Inarius) also wanted to leave the endless war, convinced him to steal the World Stone. He did and they created the world called Sanctuary. There demons and angels who also were sick and tired of the war joined them and populated Sanctuary. Eventually they fell in love and had children. These children became known as Nephelim. Lilith wanted to use their children to create an army and go against both demons and angels, to permanently stop the fighting. However, Inarius didn't want that for their children, their own internal conflict alerted both demons and angels to the presence of Sanctuary. Lilith was (I'm guessing) imprisoned and Inarius was given over to the demons and is being tortured ever since. This is the lore in the game of Diablo III as told in tomes found in Act V of the game. You will need the expansion to get to Act V.

The Diablo games are typically much more about the action than anything else, but the lore and story behind the game is INCREDIBLY dark, with stuff that would make Wes Craven cringe. It basically boils down to a war between Heaven and Hell, with Sanctuary (their parallel for Earth) being the middle ground that was supposed to be hidden from both angels and demons. The big bad you see at the end was Lilith - the co-creator of Sanctuary. The other, who you only get to see a flash of being chained up, is Inarius - her lover. They escaped to Sanctuary and had children - which were the ancestors of humanity. Eventually, angels and demons caught wind of Sanctuary, and Lilith thought the angels were coming to destroy her children, so she went to war with the angels. Her lover, Inarius, banished her from Sanctuary, sealing her away for what he believed was eternity, since they would need the blood of multiple willing sacrifices to open the gate. At the end, you saw the scholar eventually give in and offer himself and speak the words to bring her back. The pasty bald guy we aren't 100% sure on, but we think it was one of her first children whose name escapes me right now. Basically, he's an immortal demi-human who has had thousands of years of practice manipulating people - explaining why he was able to convince the scholar to sacrifice himself. With Lilith being back, the heroes are effectively faced with destroying the being that created the place they all live in. The consequences of such a feat aren't known. Maybe the entire world implodes if she truly dies? I guess we'll all find out.

Thanks for sharing all that. It’s interesting hearing the different opinions on why the scholar said the words. Had he given up and knew he was dead? Was he being manipulated? Hypnotized? It’s an amazing cinematic 😈🥳

Lilith is definitely not the mother of hate btw, her roots can be traced back to a Mesopotamian Goddess Called Ishtar , or even older as Innana, Maatand many others. She's an arctypical matron figure in ancient spiritual beliefs. War , fertility , and wine , also modernly known as a strong female figure to rebel and never submit, or a strong matron capable of war and in charge of things such as births . Those are big assets to assign a deity.

Diablo 3 just being more generic fantasy was a big reason why a lot of people didn't like it at first. Blizzard has WoW for that setting Diablo should be dark fantasy. They made it more dark in Reaper of Souls though.

Ah okay. Maybe that’s why I thought it was fantasy because we played Diablo 3 🙃

I highly recommend you check out The Ninth Gate, VERY similar vibe to this trailer. I played Diablo 1 when I was a senior in highschool and let me tell you; in the dark late at night, in your room alone, that game FREAKED you the fuck out. Especially when you would accidentally come upon that special room on level 2 by accident and hear those fateful words "AHHHH FRESH MEAT" and have to run for your life and turn all the lights on haha.

Love it when a game can do that 😈. Is that the ninth gate with Johnny Depp? 🤔

To give you a little bit of Lore if you're interested. Lilith "daughter of hatred" (Mephistos daughter = Primeval of Hatred Brother of Baal and Diablo) the angel you see in chains for a brief moment is Inarius an angel who joined forces with her. They even have a son called Rathma which is the guy summoning her.

Definitely interested in lore. Others have filled us in as well but don’t think we knew the son was Rathma summoning her. Or if someone said it we just missed it or forgot. Either way we appreciate you sharing the info 😃

In case it wasn't obvious, *willing* is a very broad term in the Diablo universe.
