Yes! I think people are taking it for granted it's normal black mold. I think it somehow enables the house/ghosts to manipulate the living through exposure over time. That's why the red room is pleasant to whoever goes there. Maybe it's why there was scratching in the basement wall--to expose the dad, not just reveal the body. The mold came back ridiculously fast after removal, too.

This is, by far, one of Mike Flanagan's best work to date from both storytellings to creative directions. Adapting from Shirley Jackson's work about a group of strangers trying to stay as long as they can in a haunted house made it into a personal family drama with the spectral as an added bonus was superbly crafted. Not only were the casts perfect, but Mike Flanagan also managed to experiment with different techniques that gelled well together-from Bent-neck lady twist to the one continuous shot in episode six. As a television series, this is among the top tier out there.

what if it was Mold..... The dad kept trying to fix mold in the basement of the house that was running down from somewhere what if the whole house had mold areas. The worst was the room with the red door because if anyone remembers, that room looked to be filled with mold on the walls. I watching an episode of Forensic Files several years back about a couple who either built or moved into a huge house. They were completely healthy before moving in, but after living there for a little bit they all started to become very ill. The son developed respiratory and ended up with mental heath problems, the father developed horrible memory problems where he couldn't even remember his wife or son, and the wife had some serious issues like coughing up blood. On one of those occasions where the wife was coughing up blood she was sitting next to a stranger on an air plane and he just so happened to be some mold specialist that owned his own company on removing it or whatever. And he asked if she was ok, and she just shrugs it off and starts telling him all of the issues her and her family has been having since they moved into their home, and he tells her well let me look at your house and I'll tell you if there's a problem or not. So the mold guy ends up inspecting the house and find this rare type of deadly mold that exposed to can cause serious health problems and eventually death if you were exposed to it unprotected continuously growing inside of the walls of the home. And the mold spread very rapidly so they couldn't take clothes pictures or anything because anything they took from the house was contaminated air born whys from this mold. So they had to leave everything they owned, in the moldy house because it could cause it to grow somewhere else that they lived, it was that crazy. So I'm thinking that the mold just drove everyone crazy for generations in Hill House. Because to me it kinda makes sense, it made everyone hallucinate and eventually drove everyone bat shit crazy because mold is not really something to turn a blind eye to or to let fester. But I know Hill house is based on a book so. lol But I just think it's just an interesting theory. MOLD!! THE SILENT OR UNFORESEEN KILLER!!!

My issue with the mold theory lies in three things. For one, Poppy Hill was insane before she stepped into the house. Two, the Dudleys. Like stated, they've been working for the Hills for years upon years, they would've been exposed to it for far longer than the Craines and it was only later in life that they stopped staying at the house around the clock. If the black mold is supposedly the cause for all the residents' mental and physical ailments, then the Dudleys would've caught a big brunt of it, and yet we have no indication of any physical or mental illnesses from them other than the one incident of Mrs. Dudley losing her baby and hearing it's cries only late at night. And three, probably most importantly, has to do with the show's themes of trauma. The black mold is an awfully convenient excuse to explain away all the residents' traumas in the house, and I believe this is done 100% intentionally. Blaming everything that happened in Hill House on mold or mental illness, as Steve does, causes the family to ostracize Nell and Luke who took the brunt of what happened in Hill House. They constantly deny their experiences, and it eventually causes them both severe depression. There's a recurring element in Nell's (and slightly less in Luke's) about how nobody ever believes them. It even shows up in Nell's final hallucination with her family saying they've always believed her, and again during the storm (in one of THE most powerful scenes in the show and tragically underrated, imo) when young Nell said "I was right here and no one could see me," as the camera shifts to her ghost. This denial to believe her trauma causes the other three to see Nell as crazy and is part of the reason her calls in the beginning were ignored. The mold also stands as yet another thing that protects Hill House. Not only does it put the blame elsewhere, but it's conveniently and suddenly found only by hearing knocking in the wall, which keeps the family there far longer than intended. (Also, there's all the hidden ghost that can be seen throughout the series that none of the characters in the show see.) ((Sorry for the length.))

My family and I once rented an apartment, and there was mold, it was terrible, it didn't lead to hallucinations, but we had breathing problems and allergies to everything, everyone had a crazy cough... we moved, there is no more mold, but a folder with family documents always forms mold underneath, we have to dry it, wash everything and it still appears again in the place where it lies

Great analysis! Even with watching for these, I missed half of them! There's (at least) two other parts in the show that give me the creeps after watching/serve as some haunting foreshadowing - one is when they are opening the boxes in the library (right after Olivia gives Luke the bowler hat) and she finds the black rose shawl. She goes into that monologue about how the room can look and mentions that there will be shelves on the floor so that the boy in the wheelchair can reach them. And then later during the storm she opens the room to his ghost! Two Storms is one of the more eerie episodes, but that really creeped me out when I connected it. And then secondly, in some what I can only assume is intentional blocking to foreshadow it, but at Arthur and Nell's wedding, when she goes to kiss him after dancing, she cranes her neck at a very strange angle to reach him, and as soon as I saw that I went "OH NO" but the full reveal at the end of the episode wasn't any less gut-wrenching. Mike Flanagan masterfully directed this show. So haunting!

There was a part with child Nell (in the storm episode, I think) searching for the others in the darkened room below the stairs with all the statues. She's wearing a nightgown and kind of twirling around. It's reminiscent of her dancing by herself there as an adult.

Multiple people experienced the same exact hallucination... such as the banging or the clock repair guy or the mom crawling towards them or the car scene. That can't be naturalistically explained by black mold. Also, theo's sixth sense isn't possible to explain naturalistically. There are undeniable supernatural occurrences in the show. On the other hand, the show presents thought and memory in a way that seems like a hallucination. So this blurring between reality and fantasy is what makes it so hard to understand what precisely is going on in each scene.

Mike Flannigan is just amazing, I love all his shows, I love how he uses mostly the same actors, he just knows how to give you that creepy haunting feeling. the Haunting of Hill House is my favourite of all of his work up till now tho. Thanks for the video.❤

Love to see the growth. Your first spoiler of this show vs this one is light years more in depth.

Imagine if all of these ghosts are just crew not getting out of the way of shots haha.

I'm sure there's another ghost right at the begining that you can see behind Hugh's shoulder when he's calming Nell

Rewatched it for a second time, god damn this show is intense and hits me right in the feels. I got to understand it alot more watching it a second time, how ever i still miss out on the hidden placed ghosts, aside from maybe 2-3 lol

I just wish the hidden ghosts weren't blurry. Have them in a reflection, shadows, under pianos, at the back of scenes - cool. But when they're blurred what's the point? You aren't going to look back and think WOAH I can't believe I missed that, you're going to think, wow that smudge was supposed to be scary?
@heavyspoilers4 жыл бұрын
Yeah me too, a lot of them don’t have the full creep factor because of it
@crowspirit51544 жыл бұрын
I think it's supposed to be a subliminal technique; your brain picks up theres a shape there, but it's too blurry or unclear to bother fully focusing on unless you know what you're looking for. But just noticing the vague person-shaped shadowy shapes creates an unconscious atmosphere of unease.
@CrzndlSndr4 жыл бұрын
@@crowspirit5154 yeah the movie IT did this as well. There were often things in the background that you would only notice on a subconscious level unless you were looking for it. It was meant to create a sense of persistent unease instead of relying on jumpscares and the like.

It makes the audience sense that the Crains are being watched, subconsciously. Humans are very good at sensing when they’re being looked at, like when you feel somebody looking at you from behind when rip-off you can’t see if

It took me 5 rounds of watching the show and 2 of this video to notice the ghost behind Liv in the dining room in episode 2 doesn't disappear but instead sits at the table in the follow up shot! God I love this show!

Is this long enough ago for Paul to do a classic review of this banger of a show

I don’t think olivias hair was being pulled by a ghost as much as it was just.. responding to gravity. It looked like it was kinda folded up as she had her hair against the headboard so when she turned her head it unfolded and fell back down

i found myself laughing alot when i got scared, i think it’s because im new to horror so i find it funny when i get scared. one moment that sticks out is when luke was found by the bowler hat man (terrifying btw) and instead of screaming like ‘ahhhhh’ it was more like ‘reeeeeeeeee’ and i couldn’t help but giggle

Pretty sure Luke was feeling cold and stiff because of his shared empathy. The whole family felt the noose around Nell's throat, but only he felt her rotting.

It’s also interesting to notice that Olivia was taken over by the house and when that occurred she began to wear the red robe

After Nell has her first bent neck lady nightmare, she's going back to sleep and there is a ghost behind her.
