A song that to me states, ‘Fuck you’ to all the imposters that Deftones were lumped and categorized with in which they had to be compared to. The song is an ode to Deftones themselves, in that they will always be their own squad, their own team of goons, simply leading/creating the path vs. following one.

Deftones has been an interesting experience for me too. Many of these songs are actually new to me. I bought the white pony CD way back when it came out and listened to it hundreds of times, but for some reason I didn't branch into their other stuff. Don't know why. I think it was one of your white pony reactions that came up in my feed that turned me on to your channel. Keep them coming and we'll keep "them" coming! By the way, "Lucky" and "Kid A" are both Radiohead references. Lucky is a song, and Kid A is an album. I look forward to when that happens, but until then, we'll keep our seat belts on.

I think w/ many they just assumed they stopped making good music. Maybe it was cuz the self-titled and Saturday Night Wrist represented a little lull, even though it was still solid work. But they kept evolving and clearly gained inspiration for Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan. Maybe it was Chi's accident. Even I didn't listen to every song or give all a real chance. I ended up liking Royal, and have considered a couple other decent, like this one. Not that it's a high hit rate relatively to what I already liked from the good majority of the catalog I gave a real chance. I think the song selections could have been more focused like w/ Tool. A lot of outstanding songs left.

The term Goon Squad has an actual definition. From Wikipedia: "A group of criminals or mercenaries commonly associated with either pro-union violence or anti-union violence." There's a lot more to it. Pretty cool.

After you finish the Deftones' discography (which in fairness, There's still many more songs to go), I think you should listen to each album from beginning to end and then do your best of episode. It might be fun to see how all the puzzle pieces fit in the finished product (look at all the people commenting on how this connects to "Rosemary" in here for example). Just a thought, keep up the great work.

Honestly Deftones is so amazing that EVERY song of theirs slaps. I love your analysis on these songs cuz it gives me a new perspective. You gotta do MX, Bored, Swerve City, Beauty School, Hole in the Earth and Around the Fur before you stop. Cheers!
