This is the title track from the Deftones new album. They never disappoint; I listened to this album front to back right after buying it, and enjoyed every minute. I love the flow of the album, and Gore stood out to me as being very interesting on the drums. Abe always writes amazing drum parts; he isn’t flashy as many other talented drummers are, and is happy sitting back subtly supporting the songs, but occasionally you hear him go off on some crazy tangent. The hi-hat/snare groove that opens this song is one of those tangents.
This groove is difficult for two reasons: (1) it’s really fast and technical, and (2) it’s a similar pattern to an iconic Neil Peart groove (articulated differently on the ride and snare; e.g. Spirit of Radio). I had learned that Neil Peart groove during my formative youth, and I had a hard time 'unlearning' the pattern. So my hands kept trying to switch back to that old muscle memory. It's a very cool groove to play once it's locked in.
And the choruses and ending of this song just bang. A ton of fun to play. I’m scared to look closely at my cymbals for cracks after that finale.
Thanks for watching, and if you feel so inclined please leave feedback and share.
