It’s cool to see James Hetfield appreciating the deftones. It’s weird...the older I get, the more I can appreciate them, myself. I was in high school when they were at their peak and it was always “dude, the deftones are so emo and gay”. Then my senior year, I went and saw them. Chino had the flu and still CRUSHED Digital Bath that night. I kept thinking “he’s sick, he’ll never be able to hit those notes”..”FEEL LIIIIIKE MOOOORE”...it was unbelievable. Now, almost 20 years later, I’ve really grown to understand their use of atmosphere and groove...they were almost like the shoegazers of the alt metal scene.

I was quite the opposite, I remember that listening to Deftones in 2000 was like "oh shit that's too edgy for me". I used to listen Limp Bizkit, Korn and those MTV-commercial bands, but Deftones was always a different breed. More "heavy" and dark.

DAAAAMN I laugh my ass off here dude KKKK nice story!!

@@JDogg-ue9if Sure, in the literal, genre sense…the Deftones are probably “alt metal” more than anything else. They aren’t Dashboard Confessional, Sleeping with Sirens or Sunny Day Real Estate. That’s *actual* emo. But in a way, bands like Deftones or Counting Crows definitely are. If you just read the lyrics to a tune like Pink Maggit or Change on face value or hear the way that Chino delivers them…that’s as “emo” as anything else out there. It’s not a pejorative. It’s just an element to what they do.

It's not audible in this recording but during their gig the main vocals that were sent to the main speakers were muted or some cable broke or something else - I don't know. But for three quarters of this gig Chino wasn't audible at all. I was really disappointed because I am and was a huge fan of the deftones and they were my main reason to come to this festival.

I had illegally downloaded a few songs from White Pony a few days before that.. I listened to Around The Fur for months non stop.. Then one day they released the self titled album.. I don't know. When the younger person came to see them specifically in St. Louis, I didn't expect Mudvayne or Limp Bizkit to just absolutely destroy them live. Mudvayne played before them and killed it. Became a Mudvayne fan after that. Deftones show up after their act and it was almost bad. That younger person is me now and I know some of their overplayed radio songs, but after seeing them live there was no way I was even going to download their discography illegally. I hated Limp Bizkit back then, but they were so much better. That band was great live. Deftones - no. More like deaf to any tone.

But Chi’s vocals were strong like bull with more presence than the rest of the band itself at times. He was, in my opinion, irreplaceable and it’s no wonder he was kept alive as long as he was- they were waiting hoping he’d just “wake” up and Deftones would be whole again. Seeing this made me realize just how different they were during the Chi years. Not to discredit the bassists since Chi but just look at him- happy to be there! RIP Chi. Sacto represent!!

I recently got into deftones from a recommendation of a freind of mine and I was instantly hooked so for the last month pretty much all I have listened to is deftones and this group is just so good I cannot get enough no matter how many times i listen to one of their albums (sometimes multiple times in a row) it's just amazing and at first I was kinda skeptical of like the shoe gaze sound but I really love it it's amazing to me. I love deftones!!!

KZbin has been suggesting me this video for some time now, but I kept ignoring it because I was convinced that this a was the Pinkpop 2003 show but with better quality or something... I mean, this video is not supposed to exist, in my head this was a fact after years of searching for longer versions of that crappy 12 mins video you mention. Incredible finding and thanks a lot for sharing!

@FIDEL_CASHFLOW_4 жыл бұрын
How is this prophetic? Starting in the mid 90s, rock was on its way out and radio started to play more country, rap, and pop music. If this concert is in 2003, he had at least five or six years of seeing the downward trend of rock before making the statement. So answer me this, how is he prophetic?
@jobmeyer44424 жыл бұрын
@@FIDEL_CASHFLOW_ Because literally the majority of music nowadays is exactly like what they did right there. And Zenarchy was trying to be funny. Whether he was serious about "prophetic" or not, the goal was to joke, and the 43 people who liked his comment obviously understood that. Have some fun for once in your life.
@FIDEL_CASHFLOW_4 жыл бұрын
@@jobmeyer4442 Chino had at least five or six years to see the downward trend towards what he's talking about in this clip from 2003. Noticing a trend over half a decade and commenting on it hardly makes one a prophet. And no. The 43 people who liked this comment did so out of a sense of superiority. People like yourself who seemingly look down upon other musical genres becoming popular are so incredibly insecure that they use something as inane as taste in music to projector superiority on to others. They tell themselves that only them and a select minority of people are intelligent enough to still like something like rock music and that everyone else is an idiot for liking what's popular.

@@Mike4891w I saw Deftones in 1996 when they opened up for Pantera. I wasn't familiar with their first album so it sounded like a mess to me. 'Bored' sounded cool tho! Lots of their stiff doesn't have a tight sound like that song. Kinda lose most of the time. I'm my opinion.
