I was watching this video when my mom came in and started watching it with me. She told me I had a Pooh themed party at Club Disney when I was really little and that it was the worst thing ever. Club Disney had messed up big time from printing the wrong location (TO instead of Covina), to giving my presents away to a different family, and never giving me my cake or Mickey pizza. I don't remember any of this (I was 3-4) but apparently I was devastated since I only had 3 people (all of whom were my cousins) show up to my freaking party due to the printing error sending people to the wrong location. My mom ended up buying each of us one toy from the store to make up for it. She was quite livid after the whole ordeal. She made Club Disney track my presents down to return to me and demanded a refund for all the money she had spent for the party. They found & returned my presents and she got every dime she spent on this disaster of a party refunded to her. They apparently never apologized for any of this. All in all I learned something new from my mom and Defunctland!

There's a plaza by my childhood home where the only business left standing is a Chuck E. Cheese's. Like, sure, it outlasted a Blockbuster, who didn't, but it also outlasted a major regional grocery store, a Little Cesar's, a popular local Chinese food restaurant, a Pub 99, a nail salon, and a CVS. When the world ends, Charles will still stand tall.

Fun Fact: Chuck E. Cheese's (the character's) official backstory is that he was an orphan, so no one ever celebrated his birthday, and this upset him so much that when he grew up, he made a fun restaurant-arcade for kids to go for their birthdays so no one had to experience party-less childhoods like he did.

Really? I never knew that! In recent news, a girl who worked there threw a young boy a birthday party when no one showed up. When I was six I legitimately got lost in a McDonalds play place crawl tunnel. I crawled through those colourful, sweat smelling tunnels for what felt like ages (but was probably only a couple of minutes). I could hear other people but I only saw one other kid peaking out from behind a corner only to skitter back when she saw me. I’m not saying I temporarily clipped into a child version of the backrooms, but I think we can all agree that if there existed such a place, one entrance would definitely be inside a McDonalds

After being "the best hider" for like maybe twenty or thirty minutes I gave up and eventually went down the slide. I remember being really mad and asking my sister what happened, she said,"I forgot to go in there!" Also I was extremely shy/ possibly antisocial as a kid... If you were the kid in purple you did look hella lost/confused. If it wasn't you, "I'm sorry kid in a purple striped shirt." 😊😅😂

There's an indoor activity center called SuperPark that's basically Discovery Zone for adults! It's more geared towards sports but there's an all-ages ball pit. It's from Finland but they have international locations mostly in Asia and Middle East. Apparently they're a franchise model so let's hope that they'll come to US very soon!

I worked at Chuck E Cheese about 7 years ago when I was 16. When you were talking about the Play Place I was reminded about this time when a kid wouldn't come out of the little overlook area. His mom didn't feel comfortable climbing up there so the manager went up to try to get him out. When she gets up there we see her hands slip and her fall on her face. Turns out the kid had taken his full diaper off and wiped his feces all over the tube and she had fallen face first into it. The other manager demanded that either my coworker or I go up and clean it. The three of us walked out and never went back.

DisneyQuest was my first job after highschool. It was such a rad experience and Pleasure Island was such a fucking awesome thing for me through my early 20's. It broke my heart to see them kill off Pleasure Island and eventually DisneyQuest. I legitimately teared up when you mentioned it. They threatened closing it when I worked there in 2005 and it seemed like they had been threatening for years. It made me so happy to see that stubborn bastard hold on for another 12 years before being closed. I still have a Cyberspace Mountain card with 13 loops on it named the Jolly Trolley.

Disney really is a such a morally grey company. While employing very talented artists, engineers, and people who I think do genuinely care about kids, they are also a giant capitalistic leviathan who now have become the Standard Oil of entertainment. Issues such as low employee pay at their resorts still persist to this day. As someone who was born in Orlando Disney stories always hit close to home for me as what Disney produces truly highlights our society's surreal contradictions.
@sillygoose6356 жыл бұрын
They are going to increase the pay sooo.... Disney isn't THAT bad.
@chrisallot666 жыл бұрын
The goal of any BUSINESS (not charity) is to make money. Period. There is absolutely nothing morally wrong with what Disney does... the issue is that people CHOOSE to consume the garbage they produce. Just look at what they did to Star Wars... UGH!

+Stevie 1. Neither Disney or Bob Iger weren't going to do anything about their workers' low salaries until they were publicly shamed by Bernie Sanders. And 2. it really says everything about our society when people will run and take up for a large impersonal corporation over actual flesh and blood workers. The brainwashing is truly fascinating and scary at the same time. Sure Disney stories are good and they hire very talented and well meaning creatives, but at the end of the day Disney the company only cares about its shareholders and nothing else. They do *not* care about you or your family. Us Americans really do need to step out of our right-wing economic Stockholm Syndrome and learn that large corporations do not need to be defended. Our social and economic systems are broken and Disney's issues are just symptoms of these larger problems.
@justinreid29476 жыл бұрын
+Moby Green This consumerist "personal choice" narrative is just flat-out corrosive and the cause of pretty much all of our country's problems. A choice of products is the furthest thing from choosing your own destiny, and fooling people into thinking that buying and selling things is the purest form of freedom has made them way easier to control by those in power. This is the true face of neoliberalism, which really is a form of social darwinism in a clever disguise, and it seeks to turn every aspect of life into a commodity that is to be bought and sold. This comment from a socially right-wing perspective, but this has also taken over too much of the so-called "left" as well. I hope this disgusting greedy ideology crashes like the authoritarian Communist societies because ideas like these are truly Communism's evil reverse image. People are sick and tired of "business" having lordship over their lives and people on the right and center need to understand that.

I live near the first Club Disney and my kid was small, so we LIVED there!! It was awesome, but they made a few basic mistakes. First, it skewed too young. Most of it was for pre-schoolers (Pooh, princess dress up, etc), which left out too many kids. The computer games were super basic/young (and the computers were usually broken anyways). There was a baby/toddler play zone, and then the climbing structure, which was kinda small - think McDonalds size. Plus, they had miscalculated the main slide and the first week kids got hurt - that’s the reason there was always a worker at the top. Which leads to the biggest problem - it was WAY too reliant on human workers. Parents chilled in the cafe (which had excellent food), and a worker had to be in each semi-separate zone to police bullies etc. They tried to have interactive shows nearly continuously in the little theater, which required skilled entertainers; magicians, comedians, etc. The cafe required cashiers, cooks, busboys. Constant cleaning was needed all over. It was easy to see how the cost of employees was very high. And surprisingly, many times we would be there and there were few customers, especially after the first year or so. Even in an affluent area, there are only so many stay-home moms hanging out with their preschooler in the middle of a weekday. Other people were bothered by the “high” admission charge, as the place just wasn’t that big, but we had a monthly or yearly pass, and I appreciated that there were no tokens to buy, like Chuck E. Cheese had. Overall, it was a class act and very well done, and we really mourned when they closed. Disney admitted it made money, just not “enough” money.

When you lay it out the way you did, Disney IPs, theming, and attention to detail, it's absolutely dumbfounding that it *didn't* become a hit. I remember being a kid and having Chuck E. Cheese down the road from us when I lived in the Atlanta suburbs, and I thought even then that it was trying to be Disney and have the Country Bears Jamboree vibe. At that time it was mostly an arcade, with video games and ski ball and other fair-type games where you could win tickets to get a prize. By the time it became an indoor playplace, I was a teenager and bummed that I was considered too old/tall to get in there and do the FUN stuff, and I remember wishing that had been around when I was a smaller. So, was it mostly that they scared too many people away with the idea that there were going to be tons of people and it would be a madhouse? Or is it just that Eisner micromanaged too much and really did NOT have that Disney eye for detail, or that he wanted to do it all on the cheap?
@Tread13 жыл бұрын
I had a Discovery Zone a little ways out of town when I was a kid in the late 90's. Every time I could pester my dad to take me there for the day was pure heaven, the enormous plastic tube maze was the epitome of adventure and the dozens of arcade games offered endless entertainment. Places like that really sum up 90's childhood entertainment for me. As a matter of fact, as soon as Defunctland mentioned plastic mazes and ballpits I paused the video and told my wife "that reminds me of Discovery Zone!" I then spent about 10 minutes explaining why it was so wonderful before literally the next section started talking about it.

I never knew that either. When I was a kid I only knew of Showbiz so when chuck-e-cheese took them over (or at least i thought) I was sour. Lie indeed

An episode could be done on Showbiz or Chuck E. Cheese (though not defunct, but inextricably linked with Showbiz) alone.

@@ericandy88 i don't know if it counts but tpmvids did a video of the evolution of chuck e.cheese

the reason why is because showbiz actually shared the rights to the rockafire explosion with creative engineering and aaron fetcher; around the time of the acquisition, showbiz wanted full ownership of the rockafire explosion but fetcher refused. they couldn’t compromise, so fetcher walked and showbiz stuck with the rat. honestly the passion, energy, and genuineness of the rockafire explosion beats that pathetic rat any day of the week. watch an rae showtape and compare it to a cec showtape, i can guarantee you’d prefer rae.

Woah! I grew up in Thousand Oaks and I've been trying to remember for forever what the disney themed playplace I went to when I was very young was. I have a memory of being at the top of a big slide, where an employee would ask you what disney character you wanted to be, you'd tell them a character, like Ariel for instance, and they'd say over the intercom something like "Ariel is coming down!" as you went down the slide. Maybe it was a precaution against too many kids going down the slide at once, idk. I had no idea there was so few of these places! I feel special now :) Thank you Kevin!! I'm gonna see if my mom and my sister remember anything about Club Disney.

I remember at the San Bernardino Club Disney that the slide would make the Goofy scream when you went down.

The discovery zone thing legit happened to me. My mom took me and my brother to the one in our area and we witnessed the sign on the door saying it was closed. And yeah someone was having a birthday party at the time and showed up for it, a whole group of kids was there. Everyone was really upset about it.

Like, how many phone calls would it have taken to let people who had a reservation know for the week it closed? If that's how they treated people, it deserved to go out of business.

I was one of those kids that showed up to Discovery Zone for a big party only to find out it was closed. It devastated me because we went there at least once a month for almost 2 years! Wow, I always get hit with some serious nostalgia when I watch these videos. I’ve enjoyed every single one I’ve watched so far and I can’t wait for more. Guaranteed subscriber.

JediAnn Solo that sounds horrible. What was your reaction?

My aunt used to take me to Discovery Zone a lot when I was little. I don't remember it much except the name, but she's told me that we would typically go on Mondays after they cleaned the ball pits (she's a nurse and thus was concerned about hygiene, which isn't unreasonable considering that all kinds of nasty stuff has often been found in those places.) I've heard elsewhere it was a popular place for birthday parties, but I can't recall ever going there for anything like that.

I believe I had my party there... on the day it closed. Last event before it all shut down.

that is so sad! I hope you still had a good birthday though.

T K If my recollection is correct, I whined and pouted all the way back to the car while my brother cried. Our parents took us to a local playground as a last minute consolation and I spent about 45 minutes scooting slowly on the merry-go-round.
