Degenerative Myelopathy

In this session, Dr. Judy discusses Degenerative Myelopathy which is a disease where the nerves and spinal cord begin to degenerate beginning in the back end. She explains that this disease is difficult to diagnose and shares various signs to look for such as unsteadiness and swaying at the back end and perhaps the knuckling under of the back feet which would cause the nails to drag and scrape as the dog attempts to walk. Dr. Judy gives suggestions as to how to help dogs with Dm. She recommends the Help Em Up Harness to aid these dogs. There's not a lot of treatment that can be done other than trying to keep the pet moving as much as possible on tactile surfaces. Dr. Judy references some of the studies of Dr. Roger Clemmons as he has studied DM in detail and written many papers on the subject which may be found online. According to Dr. Clemmons, NAC (N-acetyl cysteine) may be of help. This product may be found in Dr. Judy's online store. While there's genetic testing that can be done, it's not always reliable. This disease is better diagnosed by elimination and ruling out other disease. After using a harness, the pet will eventually graduate up to needing a cart. Dr. Judy recommends Eddies Wheels, an online company (link below) which custom builds carts for dogs with DM. Finally, she also recommends getting boots for these pets as well to help them as they tend to drag their nails. Though this is a very difficult disease, life expectance can be extended by keeping these pets moving as much as possible with physical therapy and walks.

When does it become time to say goodbye . I for one feel if my boy can’t live a quality life that’s the time . The bigger the dog the lest quality in my opinion my lab is very big so I would never drag him around .
