I had a math teacher who utilized a flexible teaching format. He prerecorded lessons that you could watch either in class or whenever. He prioritized class time for practicing the concepts so he could help and guide students through the process as they did it. There was no homework, only quizzes and tests and a cool project at the end of the year that substituted the final. If you had watched the lessons and made the most out of class time to practice and ask questions, you did well for yourself. I don't ever remember struggling or stressing out over his math class.

I had a Math teacher who assigned 30 minutes of homework each class, and offered after school help for anyone who needed it. Every student that had a class with him (aside from one weirdo) said he was the best math teacher they ever had.
@MadamFoogie Жыл бұрын
I remember so many traumatic nights with my parents screaming at me about not being able to do basic math, and me bawling my eyes out. Protip: yelling at a kid makes it REALLY hard for them to concentrate! For the vast majority of my public education, I scraped by just doing the barest minimum of assigned homework. I was fine if I enjoyed the class, but if it didn't interest me, I didn't bother. Got diagnosed with ADHD late, at the age of 18. Oh and I also have dyscalculia, so that explains the math thing.
@ashwhiteforest9078 Жыл бұрын
I got perfect scores in English, science, literature. Everything but handling numbers. Simply because I would make these bizarre calculation mistakes even I couldn't explain. It was like my brain was imagining another number, and at that time the answer made sense. Fifty or more long division problems. Simplifying fractions. Failures. And, even if I got a C, I was told to redo the entire assignment again because that wasn't good enough. Homework on top of new homework. So I just quit. Everything. By fifth grade I just stopped trying. Not just math, everything. Even the things I was good at. I especially like to recall my oh so serious assignment of gluing fucking Cheerios to poster board to make a model of an atom. I don't know. It's not that complex really, but something about the monotony just pissed me off so badly I preferred to sit and do nothing, as opposed to that. Fucking that. I'm dying anyway now. I didn't even make it to forty. Just barely, and these last years are full of pain and exhaustion. And I probably won't even see forty, in the end. I know plenty about atoms. Enough. And most of it came from random KZbin binges. You know what I learned in school? That we need to take weeks to finish one short story about Donna Devarona, gold medal swimmer. That name, that utterance, with precisely that title, is burned into my goddamn mind, to the point I can still hear my teacher's accent when saying, Donna Devarona. Gold medal. Fucking swimmer. I was in fourth grade. I read every story in that reading book well before the year was up. You know what happened? I got in trouble for not being on the same page as the rest of the class, reading about Donna. Fucking Devarona. Gold medal bane of my goddamn existence... Got a little heated there. Point is people who have high school diplomas ask me not only to spell things for them, but I shit you not, they will ask me to do math problems as well when they need help with basic multiplication. That's fucking astounding. I lose my place counting change, and somehow I'm more fit to do basic math. And I have no diploma. I guess I did say that I just stopped trying at all in school, so, no surprises there. Fuck it. Dying. Don't ever let anyone force you to do stupid crap. Die on that hill. It's better than living on theirs.
@ashwhiteforest9078 Жыл бұрын
Ah shit, y'know what? I got curious about the spelling. I was just crap shooting phonetically. It's De Varona. When I say that sound is burned into my brain I mean it.
@getoutofmyheadgetoutofmyheadg Жыл бұрын
@@ashwhiteforest9078 You sound like a smart guy/girl that really was destroyed by school, and I get you I literally have the exact same problems. When I do math equations, for example last time on a test that I was learning 30 hours for, my brain thought it would be cool idea to swap the equation formulas that you need to use for basically every equation on the test making my grade go from probably B+ to an E, my brain also does this thing where I can do the whole equation correctly, and at the end when I have to write down the result, I just write something completely different than what I just completed calculating. I also have dyslexia and I have to be given more time on tests, which should look like this: Everybody has 60 minutes to complete the test, and I receive 90 minutes. So I was on my way to school to write this test I studied so much for and somebody decided to faint on my train, so I had to catch another one because that one had to stop, I somehow made it but I literally had to run to make it, do you know how much additional time I received from the teacher even tho I was late (not because of my actions) and i even tho i have dyslexia? 5 minutes. I got 5 fuck*** minutes despite all of this, I get that this is a teacher issue but god damn it i have bad luck, and a bad teacher. But despite all of this I didn’t gave up. At the time I studied for 3 days, 10 hours a day a straight and right before school, I was just exhausted on this test, instead right now I’m learning every day, not because I need to, not because I want to. I learn because I’m not forced to, Oh the test is in a month? I’ll just start learning right now. I only learn in small amounts, and I make it as easy and comfy for myself as possible. I get a coffee/tea, a comfortable blanket, I launch the lofi hip hop stream, and I just go with it. The hardest part is actually starting, but once you do it’s easy, and there are 2 sayings, that motivate me every time to do hard things to the point where sometimes it’s annoying to remember them because I know that if I recall them I will do those hard things: if you won’t do it, the only person you’re cheating on is yourself, and do the hard work especially when you don’t feel like it :), and it’s not only for learning math of course, but going back to it when I write results I always go back and check whether i wrote them down correctly, practice makes prefect. I know the system is so fuck*** stupid but all you can realistically do is change you’re attidute towards it and play smart against it. I do the bare minimum on the subjects I don’t need for passing my final high school exam because they don’t matter (I’m from Europe, idk what the situation looks like in your country) and I give all of my time to the ones that I will need to use on the final exam. You just gotta make it work for you.The worst thing you can do is give up, and I don’t mean only school. I didn’t believe I could overcome this, and I did, and I bet there is somebody who wants you to succeed and get this fricking paper or whatever it is you want to succeed in, you can do it for them, and even if there is no one like this, I believe in you :)
@ashwhiteforest9078 Жыл бұрын
@HQ I figured that out way too late in life. Almost all of my capability stems from habits and understandings I picked up less than ten years ago. I'm gonna be honest, if I had my life ahead of me now I'd become a complete menace to society. But yeah, that comes from believing in hard work and never giving up. I think decades of severe social isolation turned me into something of a faux psychopath. I have extreme emotional connections to things, but in the end, I found that so many powerful and law abiding people just got there from a combination of luck and being on the right side of the sword when the poppies fall. So my biggest piece of advice is exactly that. Don't learn to impress others. Learn specifically so you can crush them. A lack of intelligence can be countered with knowledge. If you can't figure it out yourself, steal, and most importantly, remember the answer. Come to terms with your dark side, make peace with your demons, and find out how to feed them. You wanna be a drug dealer? Be the best. Be the most affluent and capable criminal on earth, and absolutely crush everything in your way. Do *nothing* for the sake of people's approval, unless you feel that approval will genuinely fulfill you. That case? Go full Mother Theresa, and the *things* you learn about her. About Gandhi. It's almost no coincidence that my health began to fail the moment I realized just how little I really wanted or needed in life, and just how much I could get away with if I walked around like I genuinely owned the world already. Thing is I wanted everyone to feel that freedom, so while it seems dangerous and manipulative, I was extremely forthright about this, and even encouraged people to call me out on it. People actually love honesty, come to find. And suddenly I'm dying? Tell me that's not divine intervention. I'm probably gonna be in a heap of trouble for the answer I arrived at in life. But you can't say I was duplicitous or unfair about it.

Not to sound like a parent but it genuinely is "those damn phones", nobody actually wants to put the effort forth for the reward at the end of it. Are Schools incredibly flawed? Yes. Are they responsible for tragedies like suicide? NO! The amount of hardship you have actually have to endure in order to go that far is simply impossible if you have either a good home life or good school life. Either one gives you a release from a shitty situation which helps alleviate mental health issues. What needs to happen is a complete restructuring of the entire school system in America. We spend the most on Schooling in the world and aren't even in second place for literacy. This is a problem rooted at the core of society. It might sound insane and delusional but schools are supposed to teach the newer generations important skills and work ethic. If that doesn't stick society collapses.

My story about homework. I had a chest infection for three weeks and missed school. My math teacher told me to do a whole two weeks of homework I missed and the homework that was due the following day and only gave me a week to do it all. Luckily my friends helped me and managed to finish it all. I had to ask five people to help me. It was during the time when sending it via email didnt exist. 😂

I’ll be honest. There has not been a single Sunday these last three years where I haven’t had to do, say, 2-5 hours of homework. And, since I have anxiety, I usually base most of my day around doing all of that homework, including forcing myself to not sleep in that late so that I can start it early enough, and still have a few hours of time to myself before I’d usually go to bed. Not to mention this year (my freshman year of college) specifically, where I sometimes got assigned so much homework that I often stressed if I could get it done in the time, or even have the willpower to do it all when I was supposed to. Not sure how people at my school even had time to socialize, be in relationships, etc. I had to become a lot less socially interactive with people these last few years because of homework alone, and, now that my first year of college is over, I somehow feel guilty that I don’t have to worry about it anymore.

At my school (in The Netherlands), homework was optional. And it was amazing. People were able to decide for themselves if they needed to study a specific topic some more or not, and if you already understood everything in class, you would just skip the homework. And yes, some people would just not do anything at all because they could, but they only needed a few bad grades for them to realise to actually do some of the homework.
