Degrassi Had 2 Episodes On The Trans Bathroom "Issue" In 2011 And Did It Brilliantly

This was amazing for the time and is even better now with how horrific trans people are treated. It is very rare we get representation this good even now. Adam and Dave become great friends after these episodes as well.

Adam was a character that honestly? Was done perfectly. They tackled a lot of trans issues and showed how these issues actually affect people. As a transguy growing up in the early 2000s I was so glad to have a character I could relate to.

yeah, he is awesome. i did not find out about him until my late 20s (im scottish and never had sky) but i adore him, he is one of my autism hyperfocus things. i'm so obsessed i made an over 5 hour long video of all his scenes and even found ones not on the wiki. i really wish i found him when i was a pre transition teen

As a trans guy myself, I personally hated his character. Why couldn’t they have gotten an actual transgender actor??? The emotional stuff was accurate, but Jordan’s portrayal was horrible.

Dave was getting mad that Adam was checking out his stance and accused him of trying to peek at his junk, yet the next day Dave actually went over & peeked at Adam's junk to see how he was using the stand-to-pee device...🤔Dave gets on his case for being curious but then is just as curious, but what Dave did was definitely creepier. I normally didn't mind Dave but in these episodes he was being a jerk, I can't believe he used the T-slur too. At least he apologized & learned, which is more than a lot of people can say. Degrassi is great at handling sensitive topics & portraying them realistically

Completely off topic but I wish that they would’ve kept Eli’s OCD. We had bipolar with Craig and him obsessing with losing Claire in earlier episodes and then how “death follows him” in later episodes made so much more sense of that coming from his OCD instead of his bipolar. I have OCD and I’m sick of people just seeing it as being a “clean freak” when it mostly consists of rituals and intrusive thoughts like that. Also, Adam could’ve just asked Eli how he stands at the urinal 😂😂😂 They were closer and he would’ve gladly showed him how he does it. That’s what I asked my best guy friend and he was happy to help me 😂😂😂

@@samthescotsman before I say anything, I just want to point out that I am a transgender male. I don’t understand the whole urinal thing… why is it so important?? My own step dad, an actual biological man doesn’t even use them. He says they’re disgusting and doesn’t use them unless he absolutely has to. I just don’t get it… having your junk exposed for the entire bathroom to see. Of course there’s a silent rule that you don’t look, but still. It’s weird. I’m good with the privacy of a stall. As private as a stall can be with all the gaps in the doors anyway.

I remember watching that episode as a teen and thinking to myself why was Adam’s hair so long? Only for him to be gone the next episode. Now I realize the actress was growing out her hair cause the character was coming to an end. And I guess it makes sense, cause Adam was going to be using hormones which idk how they would pull off with the actress

I always wondered why Adam didn't go to Drew with questions and help on passing. It seemed like he was figuring everything out on his own most of the time. I would have told a brother to keep your eyes down or forward, and never stand next to someone else if other spots are available.

God I remember when this episode came out and I remember sitting in my mom's kitchen watching it. When the heck did this become nostalgia?? I think I'm old. Anyway I'll always love Degrassi. Here's hoping they'll bring it back again someday. HBO/Warner Bros. fumbled the ball a couple years ago. But I Degrassi does tend to persist by this "Whatever It Takes" thing...

Society makes things too complicated. The whole process around bathroom is nonsensical especially in high school. They should be genderless with larger stalls like porter potties the area where you wash your hands should be outside of the bathroom.🙄 also Adam that he knows that he’s a guy yet has to do certain things to affirm his gender is contradictory. Like wearing a cup so he can feel like he has a penis is ridiculous. we shouldn’t have to play in gender, dysphoria, especially if it doesn’t matter what you have under there in order to affirm your gender

@@saharasafari9ummm it’s like if disabled people need to use something or have an assistant to help them pee… It shouldn’t matter how a person chooses to pee and if we had gender neutral bathrooms with bigger stalls then it REALLY shouldn’t matter. Who literally cares about how someone else pees when it literally doesn’t concern you? And most trans guys/trans masc people don’t even use a STP device because it can get messy and then you’d have to always carry around another pair of pants with you, but for those who choose to use one should rightfully and freely use one.

I HATE Adam’s character! As a transgender male myself, Jordan SUCKED at portraying an actual transgender male. I mean, maybe because she isn’t one… why couldn’t they have gotten an actual transgender actor to play Adam?? What Adam does in the bathroom… literally no transgender would EVER do that! Because this was back in 2010 and guess what? You're the only one who feels this way, actors act and Degrassi handled the whole scenario with taste. Jordan doesn't need to be anything to portray a character, actors are hired based on their ability to convey not because THEY ARE THAT THING. ​@@AaronNickolas7 actually I have to disagree. I understand that they did go to far in this episode with how Adam acts in the bathroom but it's portrayed pretty realistically in my opinion. Adam in this season is very new to discovering himself and from day one since he entered he just wants to be considered one of the guys. I actually Jordan did a great job cuz I didn't even know that she was a she until I watched earlier seasons of the show (I jumped on the Degrassi train very late). Now I could just be very ignorant but for an episode that came out over 10 years ago, it still holds up pretty well. Dave had a natural right to freak out because yeah that is very uncomfortable. And I definitely don't think that the school would realistically bash Dave and be on Adam's side, especially mere months after he got thrown out of the bathroom for being trans. But I mean the debatable part of whether he should be allowed to use the boys bathroom or not is still a question we deal with today. Honestly, the only thing I don't like is Adam thinking it's a punishment to use the special needs washroom and comparing his situation to segregation because one, it's not a punishment and two, it doesn't compare to racism. I'm sorry but it doesn't. But then again, I could just be ignorant so let me know if I got some things wrong since I am not a transgender person and know very little about the identity despite belonging to the rainbow community (because people think you should know everything bc of that and I don't)

I’m just going to say this on response to that: transgender people are literally MURDERED just for being transgender. Adam was literally thrown out of the boys bathroom because he didn’t have a penis. THROWN OUT! He was thrown against a glass door! Anti LGBTQIA+ people get just as violent against transgender people as racists get against colored people. They ARE the exact same thing. In fact, some gay and lesbians think that transgender shouldn’t even be part of the LGBTQIA+ spectrum. We’re even hated and mocked by some our own community!

@@Djantman03 I don't need stats for everything. Statistically there are *far* more transwomen than transmen. Therefore we can easily assume that there are more transwomen wanting use the women's restroom than transmen wanting to use the men's restroom.
