By definition, disbudding is the removal of an area of skin including the horn bud in a young calf prior to solid attachment of the horn bud to the skull. Irish welfare legislation forbids the sale of horned cattle at livestock marts. Disbudding of calves is carried out to comply with Regulations under the Diseases of Animals Act, (1966) which prohibits the sale or export of horned animals. #calving #farming #cow

Hopefully you look into using polled genetics in the future, and limit breeding horned cattle. There’s a lot of stigma when it comes to dehorning in the public’s eye and it would be good to limit the practices in the industry associated with the industry. To add its would be beneficial for you financially as well as beneficial health and welfare wise for the animals in the long run. Nonetheless thanks for being transparent and sharing the reality of what goes on in the cattle industry, keep on farming!

Thank you. Polled genetics in dairy breeds are minimal, it is a dominant trait in dairy cattle hence we have to debud. However genetics is always evolving and work is being done to try to establish the trait in more breeds. As with all thing genetics it will take many generations of breeding to establish this trait. We look forward to it for the calves and the reduced workload for us. 80% of our beef calves are from polled bulls.

You have to have a farming qualification to legally farm in our country so we are all up to date on these things thankfully. 😅
