Those dehydrated ingrediants look great! What a good alternative to the processed backpacking meals. I really love to cook outdoors (nicknamed flapjack) and these would allow me to use my creativity while still keeping light. Thanks for the tip fellas, great tailgate review!

Dehydrating frozen veggies from the discount grocery store is much cheaper. And doesn't take any time on your part, really. The dehydrator is also useful for other stuff. Also, if you have a vacuum sealer and the jar attachment, and store them in mason jars, the veggies will stay fresher and brighter longer than Harmony House. Personal experience.
@Soulman-lb3gg8 жыл бұрын
Great for emergency prepping as well. I have half gallon mason jars full of stuff.
@AnthonyMaske8 жыл бұрын
absolutely ... you can also pickup the oxygen absorbers and stick one in the packaging before you vacuum seal it ... the thing I like most about controlling it myself, is I can mix match different veggies based on what I want to cook and have it pre-packaged and ready to go, this way I don't have open the carrots for a handful, onions for a handful, etc ... I just open the one package pre-measured for the dish I want to cook/eat ...

I take it you defrost the frozen veggies before? Never thought about buying frozen and then dehydrating them.

Nope! Just straight from the freezer to the dehydrator! Works great.

We dehydrate almost everything we eat in the back country. That way, we have total control over portions, seasoning, and we can plan whatever meals we'd like (with certain limitations of course if they must have perishable ingredients). We actually prefer dehydrating our own to cut down on the salt intake. Every now and then, we'll have a Mountain House meal because they are delicious and easy if we've had a long day of hiking. Even my 9 year old son loves the meals we have when we're out. We think it's totally worth it to dehydrate our own. Yeah it's an initial investment (buy a good dehydrator), but the time factor isn't too bad. There are times when we actually do our dehydrating overnight. It dries as we sleep. We also bought a vacuum sealer and oxygen absorbents to put in the meals for when we're out for long stretches of time.

Thanks for sharing this video with us. We doesn't have dehydrated food like mountain house etc, in my country . the alternative is to dry your food or buy food that store in cans and then heat it up a little bit. other option, is to buy a soup and add some meat to it or other tasty ingredients to it.

good idea I've got 2 dehydrators for the fact one wasn't big enough for what I was doing fruit roll ups home made and jerky. I have not done basic vegetables before but I'm looking forward to doing them. for what you got it be worth you getting one one tray of veggies equal one of your bags you purchased. I've used Harmony House for years. I love their soup mixes. They have a great product, perfect for backpacking/camping. Yes, it's cheaper to dehydrate your own. Harmony House packs let you mix and match for new meals every time, just take some meat and spices. I have actually eaten them dry. Put some in your mouth and let them rehydrate, an acquired taste snack, but it works.

Is dehydrating your own food worth the time and effort? YES! I dehydrate all sorts of fruit, veggies and meat. I also buy dried beans, mashed potato flakes, gravy powder, Bisquick, and other dried foods at the grocery store.

I've been preparing and dehydrating vegetables, fruits, and meats for my backcountry trips in the Sierra Nevada for about 5 years now. As far as cost effectiveness, if I look hard enough I can find Mountain House brand dinner entrées for about the same cost of preparing my own, but I prefer to dehydrate and prepare my own meals because I control my intake of carbs/fat/protein/fiber/salt, etc and because I find it very satisfying to eat food that I created myself. If cost-efficiency is important t you, it's much cheaper to dehydrate your own foods and assemble them than buying dehydrated ingredients and assembling them into meals.
@alittleolder8 жыл бұрын
Those dehydration devices are really not expensive. Your choice in food still entails a lot of work though. If you get full good meals you just need to cook some water and put the water right in the bag. With this stuff you basically have to cook and really but them together correctly and all that, so you might also wanna look into complete meals which often come at a good price. If you want to do the extra work it's well worth it though. The dehydrator itself is a good investment especially since you will probably use it often.
@PrimalEdge8 жыл бұрын
I love crushed red pepper flakes, cayenne pepper, turmeric, garlic powder, and paprika. Based on how much you paid for that, it might be more convenient for you to just buy it. But if you plan on buying a ton of it and doing it a lot it in the long run overtime, food hydrator would probably be a good idea. Also, if you ever get to the point where you want to dehydrate your own food for at home or make your beef jerky, you would probably benefit from a food hydrator. But my suggestion that would be to just buy it as you need it, and see if it's something that you want to use extensively going forward. If so, then look into a dehydrator. They're cheap enough.

Favorite spices? Well I found these online some time ago and I use them all the time. I mix up a big batch so I can have what I need for dinner without having to always be mixing everything. Cajun Spice Mix Servings: 36 Calories/serving: Ingredients: Instructions: 1 Tbsp salt Stir well before storing 2 Tbsp garlic powder 2.5 Tbsp paprika 1 Tbsp black pepper 1 Tbsp onion powder 1 Tbsp cayenne pepper powder 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp oregano 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp thyme 1.5 tsp crushed red pepper flakes Taco Seasoning > Servings: Calories/serving: Ingredients: Instructions: 4 Tbsp chili powder Stir well before storing 1 tsp garlic powder 1 tsp onion powder 1 tsp crushed red pepper 1 tsp oregano 2 tsp paprika 2 Tbsp cumin 1 Tbsp salt 1 Tbsp + 1 tsp ground black pepper Also, I couldn't find it, but i have a list of various spices for chicken. eg Asian, Indian, American, Italian. Search online and you'll find a good listing. Copy your favorite to a word doc, print and then you have several options for dinner on any given night. Looking forward to a cooking video. Don't go with just beans though man. Spice it up and mix it up. Don't sell yourself short. Show us what you got! :-)

Not expensive at all, I dehydrate my Bell Peppers and fruits but not broccoli. I use a large closet type of dehydrator which I can put in lots using the sun to do the work & use it also as a smoker. Black beans with peppers, corn, onions, broccoli, green beans and avocado mixed in with spicy salsa makes a good meal. But you got a good deal on those for the quantity that you have there.

About the only spice I use is hot chili. Goes on most things. Cayenne pepper can be a life saver, really. Put on bad cuts to stop bleeding and a heaped teaspoon with a glass of water down the hatch will equalize blood pressure throughout the body reducing hemorrhaging and can stop heart attacks and strokes in their tracks. I'm very serious, a little research will convince!

Get on craigslist and buy a dehydrator. Super cheap and super easy to do it yourself. I make the whole meal, dehydrate it, separate it into single servings and put it in a ziploc or vacuum seal it. Easy peasy. Way cheaper than purchasing it.

I like doing good prep and dehydrating myself, instead of buying. I'm surprised how cheap your purchase was, but, I still think doing it yourself is cheaper. Plus, if you do the full meal then dehydrate, it can be a space saver and save you prep time when you actually want to eat. Plus, a lot of people online have some pretty creative and shockingly delicious recipes to try and/or tweak. But, yes, it definitely takes time... Fortunately, dehydrators are cheap, so, you could get more than one going if you want. ...my go to "spices" are taco seasoning, fajita seasoning, jerk chicken seasoning, butter chicken seasoning and I love spicy too, so chili flakes get thrown in there a lot. Also, I pickle a lot of stuff - I wouldn't take mason jars out, but, vacuum sealing pickled stuff will keep it safe.

If you want to dehydrate meat you need to get a dehydrator with temperature settings, which are more expensive, but a basic one with just one temperature is great for dehydrating fruit and veggies and they're really cheap. I got mine for $15 and I've had it for three years. If I want to dehydrate meat I just use the oven. In my experience it's definitely worth!
