Another great How To! I’ll be trying this. I got a dehydrator last winter and have been needing to use that sucker. We love onions in many dishes. I’ll be doing it outside where we have a covered porch. I have an out building, but don’t want the smell in there even 😅 We’ll see how it goes. It’s good the weather is still fine so far. The only issue is my dog might wonder what that smell is. Thanks for the info.

Thank you for the tip! I would suggest from personal experience that when doing horseradish grind it outside on a windy day.

Solid advice right there. I’m still growing my horseradish, when I get enough I’m going to do a video on it as well.

I dehydrated bell peppers last year. They smelled so good! I also dehydrated tomato slices until they were crispy....so good I ate them like chips. Now I think I'll try onions. Thanks for the great video!

Just got done with 6 lbs of Vidalia onions in my house. Vidalias are soooooo good and have a milde taste and frangrance than regular yellow or white onions, but hard to keep unless you dice and freeze or dehydrate, and I am out of room in my freezer! The aroma in the house was oniony, but not really unpleasantly so. I kept a ceiling fan over the dehydrator going and we were all fine. Walla Walla Sweets may be similar, but I do not have experience with them. Thanks for the video. I was thinking mine took a way way long time to dehydrate, but I am more confident with that now.

I can always rely on you to give me the best information. I have seen a lot of dehydrating videos and read a lot of material and I did not know there would be a problem with the beginning stages. 😭 I mean, yes I figured it would be smelly (onions are smelly) but I hadn't taken in account the amount of onions that would be processing! 🤣 You are The Man 👍 (so far, I've been buy my dried vegetables and hadn't tried it myself but I did find 2 dehydrators at a yard sale this spring so thanks for the warning 🤣)

Thank you for the very inforative video! We got a pretty good onion harvest from our garden this year, and I'm considering dehydrating some, but I'll have to get DH to move the dehydrater out to the patio first. Have you ever caramelized them before dehydrating them? I'm thinking about trying that, because like you we love the flavor and I think it would cut down on the time in the dehydrator(???). Then the entire load would taste like caramelized.
@ModernRefugee3 жыл бұрын
It’s all about the temperature with the caramelization. You would run the dehydrated 135+ so the sugars brown. You have to keep a eye on it however, so they don’t burn. I have had them brown before for me, but this time was the best. It’s probably because the onions had a higher sugar content then previous years.

Dried canned? Did you put them in your oven for a certain amount of time before placing the lids. I do a lot of dry canning

Yes about 10-15 mins. That way the seal up and keep longer. At least that is my experience.

I have always avoided doing onion because of the smell - I have dehydrater on my porch but have been concerned about the smell lingering on the plastic trays. Have you had any problems with onions making the next load taste like onions?
@ModernRefugee3 жыл бұрын
No I haven’t yet. I usually soak the trays in between uses. However I only basically dry savory stuff. Like onions, peppers and herbs.

Love anc respect brother .... quick question how much fresh onion gives you one pound ( 1 LB ) of dry onion powder ?
@ModernRefugee23 күн бұрын
I have never measured it, but just from drying onions from my own experience it would take a lot. I would say at least ten pounds or more and this is just my estimate.
